Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Director's Edition HD Recreation (V3 Now Available.) (Released)

This is an HD recreation of the director’s cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which was completed at SD resolution and only released on DVD. It’s primarily sourced from the HDTV, which uses the same transfer as the director’s cut DVD. The HDTV is low detail and has lots of compression, but it has more grain and much better contrast than the Blu-ray. The unique footage from the director’s cut DVD is upscaled. Color-corrected Blu-ray footage is used for some shots with alien subtitles. I have also recreated some of the director’s cut changes in HD by combining SD and HD footage.

This edit is available in two versions:
The main version uses the new DVD effects when appropriate, but also uses the original theatrical unaltered effects to preserve HD quality (for this reason I’m calling it a fan edit; I mostly prefer the original effects when they were fully realized).
This image gallery shows which unique DC effects were included as well as a general overview of the picture quality: https://imgur.com/a/K0EhF

The purist edition includes most all of the shots altered for the director’s cut DVD. For many of these changes I’ve combined HD and SD footage while others were simply upscaled from the DVD. The purist edition currently also has four foreign dubs (Italian, French, Russian and German) and a host of subtitles from two different European dvd releases. (The main project will be updated with these at a later date).

Video: 1080p MKV - 12 GB
Both the video and audio are BD-compliant if you want to remux this for a Blu-ray.
Audio:
Track 1: AC3 Dolby Digital - This is the same 5.1 as the DVD, but I replaced the end credits music that was looped for the director’s cut and replaced it with the original cue from the remastered CD. The file is not re-encoded, and cuts to the different end credits at the end seamlessly.
Track 2: AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround from the DVD.
Track 3: AC3 The commentary from the DVD.
Track 4: AC3 This is a commentary originally released as a podcast for startrek.com with visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman, restoration supervisor Michael Matessino, and producer David C. Fein.

I kind of skimmed through this movie to see if ALL of the changes have been added. A few of them haven’t been displayed here, but hey. I think you’ve done really well. Despite that aforementioned issue and the amount of dirt, hair, and scratches there are on the film, you’ve just taken the SLV HD project to its first step. Hopefully, you’ll find a way to put the other changes in a new version of this cut.

I thought maybe I can add in the rest of the changes that wasn’t shown in this project. However, I must find a way to convert this project without having to compress it.

Version 2 of this edit is now available. It’s a fairly small upgrade, but now it’s a little more polished.
version 2 changes:

  • newly created opening titles which have a logo animation similar to the DC DVD.
  • cleaned up some of the redone effects
  • made the DVD footage’s aspect ratio consistent throughout the the film
  • used color-corrected Blu-ray footage to add the theatrical alien subtitle font.
  • Motion tracked the the DC “Starfleet Headquarters” shot to replace the title with an HD title in the main title font.
  • Fixed one brief editing error in v1 that repeated a reaction shot incorrectly.

Thanks for the heads up, the opening credits look great!
Klingon ship interior scenes with new subtitles is crisp and gorgeous looking.
Just curious if there’s plans to add in the DC finale effects?
Referring to the ‘oxygen-gravity envelope’ scene with the floating hexagonal blocks.
Thanks again.

Glad you liked it!

Unfortunately, using the DC effects at the end puts a substantial amount of the finale in SD, including all the viewscreen shots of vger’s interior up until that point. And while they are impressively matched to the film, they are ultimately limited to being 2001 era budget cgi. I personally think most of the theatrical cut shots look better despite their limitations.
If I ever incorporate these effects, I’d want to do some extra work on them, including re-rotoscoping the two shots that incorporate a live action plate.

I have a very small update to this that I’m putting out. I rendered V3 out awhile back to correct some small errors, particularly a jump cut that I accidentally introduced. I was waiting and see if there were any bigger changes I wanted to make to justify a new release, but since there aren’t, I might as well release this now.

V3 changes:

  • added Grace Lee Whitney (as Janice Rand) to the list of co-stars in the opening credits. She was treated terribly during her time on the show, and I think her name deserves to be next to the rest of the original cast (some promotional materials featured her similarly).
  • fixed issue with the BD footage, where aggressive DNR caused the bottom left part of the frame to smear and warp. 12:12
  • fixed issue in the original DC effects where the shuttle disappeared for a frame. 13:00
  • fixed one frame editing error I introduced 15:21
  • The original effects have an issue where the shuttle moves, but the background is frozen. They trimmed the beginning in the DC, but when matching the edit, I trimmed the end of the shot rather then the beginning, as I didn’t know why it was shorter. Now matches the DC. 20:38
  • fixed two frames of encoding garbage from the HDTV 26:37
  • The audio is now the untouched dolby digital track from the DVD (not rencoded) until the end credits, when it seamlessly cuts to the new end credits music. This saves some space and preserves Blu-ray compatibility if you want to remux.

Anyone who PM’d me previously should have the updated version in their inbox, as I have updated the links.
