Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Director's Edition HD Recreation (V2 Now Available.)

This is an HD recreation of the director’s cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It’s primarily sourced from the HDTV, which uses the same transfer as the director’s cut DVD. While the HDTV is low detail and has lots of compression, it does have more grain and much better contrast than the Blu-ray. The unique footage from the director’s cut DVD is upscaled and color-corrected Blu-ray footage is used for some shots with alien subtitles. I have included most of the new CGI shots that had no existing equivalent (and needed changes like the new Vulcan shots). However, I mostly used the original versions of the shots that were altered for the director’s cut to preserve HD quality (for this reason I’m calling it a fan edit). I also recreated a couple of the director’s cut changes in HD.

This image gallery shows which unique DC effects were included as well as a general overview of the picture quality and the changes made for v2: https://imgur.com/a/K0EhF

New to version two are newly created opening titles which have a logo animation similar to the DC DVD.
Additional changes:
cleaned up some of the redone effects
made the DVD footage’s aspect ratio consistent throughout the the film
used color-corrected Blu-ray footage to add the theatrical alien subtitle font.
Motion tracked the the DC “Starfleet Headquarters” shot to replace the title with an HD title in the main title font.
Fixed one brief editing error in v1 that repeated a reaction shot incorrectly.

-Video: 1080p MKV - 13 GB
-Audio:
Track 1: FLAC
This is the same 5.1 as the DVD (lossy sourced), but I replaced the end credits music that was looped for the director’s cut and replaced it with the original cue from the remastered CD.
Track 2: AC3 2.0 Dolby Surround from the DVD.
Track 3: AC3 The commentary from the DVD.
Track 4: AC3 This is a commentary originally released as a podcast for startrek.com with the director’s cut production team leads.

-Subtitles (SRT):
1: English Subtitles
2: Text commentary by Michael Okuda.
The edit is in sync with the DC DVD, so any foreign subtitles for the director’s cut should sync up fine as long as they run at NSTC speeed.

I kind of skimmed through this movie to see if ALL of the changes have been added. A few of them haven’t been displayed here, but hey. I think you’ve done really well. Despite that aforementioned issue and the amount of dirt, hair, and scratches there are on the film, you’ve just taken the SLV HD project to its first step. Hopefully, you’ll find a way to put the other changes in a new version of this cut.

I thought maybe I can add in the rest of the changes that wasn’t shown in this project. However, I must find a way to convert this project without having to compress it.

  • made the DVD footage’s aspect ratio consistent throughout the the film

Thanks for the heads up, the opening credits look great!
Klingon ship interior scenes with new subtitles is crisp and gorgeous looking.
Just curious if there’s plans to add in the DC finale effects?
Referring to the ‘oxygen-gravity envelope’ scene with the floating hexagonal blocks.
Thanks again.

Glad you liked it!

Unfortunately, using the DC effects at the end puts a substantial amount of the finale in SD, including all the viewscreen shots of vger’s interior up until that point. And while they are impressively matched to the film, they are ultimately limited to being 2001 era budget cgi. I personally think most of the theatrical cut shots look better despite their limitations.
If I ever incorporate these effects, I’d want to do some extra work on them, including re-rotoscoping the two shots that incorporate a live action plate.
