I seriously hope I will live enough to see the original Star Wars trilogy in this quality
You will not. None of us will, except for a very old and dying Ziggy Stardust who will watch it through teary eyes as he remembers us all.
I laughed at this. This should be a new meme, what Zig will outlive us to see.

LOVE IT.

Hmm, so yeah so much for staying 100% true. =P

As a fan I've been intensely curious about how the remastering team will improve upon the infamously low-resolution "bitmap" planet shots from the first season, especially the notorious "Green Planet #1" which cropped up first in the episode as Angel One in "Angel One", only to reoccur in "The Arsenal of Freedom" as Minos, "The Royale" as Theta 116 VII and in "Sarek" as Legara IV.

The shear contrast in these two shots is simply mind-blowing. Perhaps it is worth pointing out that this beautiful comparison illustrates yet again the team's shear determination to remain as faithful to the original show as possible. The remastered Minos uses the same green-white colour, and the areas of continents/cloud cover seem to be roughly in agreement with the original... However, gone are the awful jagged-edges around the Enterprise, a result of compositing the original orbital shot of the ship onto the planet background. The planet truly comes alive in the remastered shot - we can see variations in the colour of the continents indicating mountain ranges, topped by realistic cloud cover and all surrounded by a new halo of an atmosphere! It remains to be seen whether or not there will be any differences with the stock shot of this planet in the other three episodes in which it appears.

Is at least the Enterprise the model ? It looks CG in the shot :-(

The Enterprise is the model, we've just never seen how good it can look. And these early CGI planets would have to be replaced as they never saved the renders.

I'm keeping my DVDs in order to have the originals on hand if I'm ever feeling nostalgic (and also because they're worth next to nothing on the used market anyway), but I'm really impressed with the quality of the CG on the remasters. It's tastefully done and pretty faithful to the originals in terms of artistic intent. Colors and content match the originals nicely, and most of the screen caps I'm seeing could pass for CG in a feature film. They've even introduced some simulated grain so the effects shots match the live shots.

The purist in me wants the original CG recreated as well, but rather than re-render CG to match the originals and include them with the remastered film elements, which would be an odd juxtaposition, I'd prefer they create new SD masters from the original 480i broadcast tapes and offer them as downloads or bonus content for people who buy the Blu-rays. The existing DVDs are a travesty and a proper SD release would preserve the original broadcasts in their original quality.

I say this expecting comparisons to the OT "bonus content" theatrical cuts, but this situation is different because TNG was originally crafted and mastered with the intention of showing it on TV in 480i. A clean SD release would be in keeping with preservation needs in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure Okuda is convinced they can't squeeze any more from the SD. He said he doesn't want people to feel like they're dipping again.

I'm not even a TNG fan and these images make me want to buy the set.

Looks much better than the TOS enhancements. I hated those. The CG looked awful and so, so out of place in a show that wears the fact that it is a product of the 60s as a badge of honour. This looks very tasteful, and pretty realistic too. I have to admit that the Enterprise does look a bit CG-ish, even though it's not! It's weird how that happens sometimes. Maybe it's the context of being in a CG background or some colour grading thing? I've been fooled like this a number of times and I'm not sure why this occassionally happens.

Will definitely be buying this...once they get to seasons 2 or 3. Probably 3. I gotta admit, like the Simpsons, Seinfeld or the X-Files, the first couple seasons are pretty lackluster in comparison to their third season or so.

They used the same model in Generations, so technically we have seen it in HD before. A couple TNG stock shots got used in the movie too.

Where were you in '77?

Wait, what?  If the whole issue in regards to having to redo the effects is that they were all done at 480i, how could the same shot have possibly passed muster on a feature film?

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

The Enterprise blue screen shots were all shot on film if I remember correctly

Yeah, they probably scanned the blue-screen elements for new composites.
