Likewise. Robot Chicken has implied a lot went on we didn't see though. ;)

Actually, TOS was MUCH MORE than an action series. The JJ movie is ONLY an action movie

I get that TOS always had social commentary and all that good stuff, but the reason I feel in love with it was the characters, the worlds, the adventure, and the action. The Abrams movie had all of that, and it looks like STID will too. So I'm happy.

I was left a little deflated after ST09, to be honest. Despite the action, I think the TOS was substantially quite different from ST09.  But I enjoy action movies, and the latter has grown on me quite a bit.  Just seeing the previews for STID has gotten me excited, and I think I've internally made peace with the fact that this is a different version of Star Trek, and I can simply enjoy it for what it is instead of complaining that it's not what the other Treks were.

Kirk often had to deal with the personal toll of sitting in the big chair. The "Court Martial" episode touched upon an undercurrent of jealousy and resentment of Kirk making Captain at his age. (Most of the other captains we saw on the series were older.) I think this movie is going to get into that.

That actually sounds like a very good thing. I was pretty annoyed at how he became captain in the first place, so some resentment and more undercurrents of personal conflict could be quite interesting.

Given that a good chunk of the fleet got wiped out over Vulcan, a "battlefield promotion" makes sense. (The Klingons or the Romulans might decide it's a good time to make trouble.) Captain Pike certainly needed time to recover from his injuries.

I'm not sure if Kirk being the youngest Captain in Starfleet was canon or not, but some of the stories and comics I read as a kid implied it.

Going to be a hell of a lot harder to avoid spoilers the next 30 days. ;)

If Harrison's ship isn't called the "Reliant", I will be very surprised.

Looks like a solid summer action spectacle whether it translates into a Star Trek film is another matter, and i don't mean in name only.

I would like to see this New series grow its own legs though, rather than rehashing the old movies or tv shows.  The last movie had way too many nods to the old movies for my taste and should have been a total reboot.

If its not my dads star trek then why is was Leonard Nimoy in it? I mean Trek 2009.  Why the nods to scenes from star trek 1-6, or even the loathed and much hated generations that killed Kirk.

I don't totally love or totally hate the 2009 film and i understand why it was made the way it was made from a production point of view.

But they could have taken a lot more risk and updated the thing rather than basically giving us old hat trek in a new and more faster paced, sexier veneer.

I think have some major plot points for STID figured out. Possible SPOILERS if I'm right:

Movie starts with the crew helping out a planet that isn't technologically developed (see IMAX 9 minute preview). Kirk no longer believes the Prime Directive is the best around (see "Countdown to Darkness" comics), so the ship is hidden underwater (instead of in space for some reason). The planet is being threatened by volcanos, Spock risks his life to turn the volcano off(?).

After the mission, Kirk is called back to Starfleet Command to get in trouble. On the way back, Harrison blows up some stuff in London. Kirk and Spock are at a meeting where Harrison attacks with a shuttle, killing several Admirals, including Pike (trailers don't feature him after dressing down Kirk for the PD thing).

Kirk wants revenge for Pike's death. He claims its for London and what it represents, but its personal. Admiral Marcus (Peter Weller) won't let him go, but he does anyway.

I'm pretty fuzzy on everything else. So maybe I don't know much of anything.

He, thanks to some clue, pursues Harrison to the Klingon homeworld of Qo'noS, violating treaties and traveling covertly. They find Harrison and fight, with Klingon involvement (probably as a third party and not on either side), but Harrison escapes.

Harrison then proceeds to hijack and steal a secret Starfleet prototype heavy-weapon ship. Maybe he did this earlier in the film, I dunno. Either way, knowing he has this involves Admiral Marcus's daughter, Carol, who does weapons research for Starfleet and worked on the project.

Harrison is coming to Earth, probably to destroy everything, and the Enterprise races home to stop him. Big explosions. Harrison's stolen ship crashes into San Fran, the Enterprise may or may not also crash (but probably not thanks to Scotty).

EDIT: Note: I never said why Harrison is pissed at Starfleet. I have no idea.

Perfect! The best part of our breakdown is that IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE KHAN. In fact, unless its REALLY good, if it is Khan or any other existing character it would cheapen it.

But I've not seen it, I don't know.

No... you took it too far.  It's not funny now.

Well, and that's where his motivations come into play. Was he really born "John Harrison"? I think he's some kind of rogue secret agent (thus his knowledge of the weapon-ship program), but his origins before that are a mystery. That one shot of the cryotubes in the trailers has really got me wondering.

And Klingons in a staticy dryer!

I was so confused when my Mom bought some window cling-ons once.

I'm really trying to avoid trailers as I find the current trend of putting  the whole film out in trailers is annoying as hell but I can't help but smirk every time I hear Benedict Cumerband's hilariously portentous rumbles.

BTW, who here saw the intro with The Hobbit? How awesome was that? We all wanted the movie to continue! Luckily The Hobbit was a worthy successor. The 3D effects in ST made everyone in the audience duck, with all those spears flying in our faces. Loved it. I regret seeing the first film once, and this so far looks to one-up it in every way.

I saw the ST:ID clip at the beginning of The Hobbit. Maybe it is just my prejudice of distaste for the first film, but I was really bored during it and remember thinking, I'm about to sit through a three hour long movie, why do I have to be subjected to an extra ten minutes of sitting for this crap?

The spears being thrown "through the screen" was kind of cool, and I do remember people in the audience ducking, and what sounded like an older woman even let out a bit of a shriek. But is it really that much different than 3D gimmicks in any other movie? Isn't something flying out into your face pretty standard with every single 3D movie being made currently?

One might as well complain about arrows flying off the screen in a 1950's 3D western.

When a theater employee dressed as a red shirt staggers down the aisle with a fake spear in their back, then it becomes a gimmick. ;)

Okay, I guess I've cooled a bit on the trailer since first blush, and I have a few worries. Why do they have to have a battle over Earth? Didn't they do that in the previous movie? Another avenging humanoid villain? Apart from the bit with the red planet that is from the first few minutes, where are the strange new worlds?

It's like they returned from their mission and then the story was like, oh, back to the important stuff. Let's mostly run around inside the Enterprise and hang out on Earth.

I really hope there's something that they're not showing us, Kirk's character aside.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
