I want to know why it's called "Star Trek", yet most of the films take place around Earth.  Let's get out into deep space! You know, that place where no one has gone before. Generations & Insurrection seem to be the only two films in the franchise that do not include any Earth bound segments. And that is excluding the  Earth holodeck scene in Generations.
Because films have to appeal to a broader audience than the tv show. People care more about Earth than they do about other planets.

Exactly right, that's why the Star Wars franchise has made George Lucas a really poor man because his Star Wars movie centers it's final act around a planet that isn't Earth! http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/9097/yhmin.gif

Me too. ;)

Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or does that look like a TOS style starship making a water landing?

Shall we speculate on who the blonde is? Carol Marcus? Janice Rand? Dr. Dehner?

It could be Nurse Chapel.

It might be a TOS style ship. You can't really tell. It might be the Enterprise though.

If it's Chapel, and she's still into guys with pointy ears, there could be an even bigger fight scene in the movie. ;)

Two Hollywood trends in one image. ;)

I'm more convinced it's Garth now.

Not sure what's up w/ the extra shot in the Japanese trailer. I mean it's obviously a WoK homage/ref, but we know nothing else.

Also, did anyone else realize that this trailer manages to tell us nothing new?

I feel that the Gary Mitchel thing was a red herring.  For a film with so much flair, Gary Mitchel is a rather bland name for a heavy. I just can't see it. But I must say Mr. Cucumberpatch looks a formidable villain for this Kirk.

Wasn't that the Batman trailer?

As someone who didn't really watch much ST growing up (occasionally on tv), do the harder core ST fans dislike what Abrams is doing because he doesn't have as much of the more cerebral sci-fi discussion/commentary?

I think Abrams did a good job on the first one, and the alternate universe thing allows him to leave every preexisting thing in the myths intact. But his works seem less like ST movies and more like action movies set in the ST universe. And I don't mean that in a negative way.

Just some thoughts I had. Someone let me know if this seems reasonable or if I sound stupid.

Yea I tend to pick up on those discussions here and there, but overall the Trek fans do seem to enjoy his movies, albeit with reservations about the lack of, for want of a better word, intelligent commentary.

I'm a pretty hardcore fan of Trek, and I loved the film. I can understand where a lot of other fans are coming from though when they say they don't like it...

Except for the ones that don't like it simply because it's popular with the general public. Those guys are dumb.

I liked the first film because I expected it to sort of be a one-off in order to draw up interest and then the following would be more of a return to form. I guess not. This still looks like it could be interesting but I'm just sick of action movies. They have to be really something special for me to not just be dragged to go see them.

Also... seriously? A lens flare when they show his name? He must be very self-aware or something.

No generic trailer has ever been more generic than that one.

Easy to forget Gene Roddenberry couldn't sell the first pilot episode, "The Cage" because NBC suits thought it was "too cerebral".

NBC was still impressed enough that they made the unusual decision of ordering a second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before", (the one with Mitchell) which Gene made sure was more action oriented.

The scenes fade in & out slower in the Japanese version, showing slightly more footage, aswell.

And I made a quick little comparison video for you to drool over. ;)
