STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE - AI-Upscaling Project (LaserDisc to 1080pHD)

*IMPORTANT NOTE: This project is a sort of “extension” of my previous upscale project (Star Trek Deep Space Nine - DVD to 1080pHD Upscale) - I feel it very important to inform this community that the basic file-work of this latest project was not done by me; I was lucky enough to be included in their community (they work from Laser Discs) and be able to use their files. I really have to stress that this community has to keep this “low key” to avoid the other community being shut down, because we all know how certain big companies handle their property.
Anyhow, I wanted to share insights into what I consider “The Best Possible Upscale So Far” (in my opinion anyway).

Therefore: I won’t be anble to give you specifics to replicate this work, since I only added to the workflow without knowing what came previously.

But just this much: The Laser Discs as a source (and the upscale already done by the extremely talented members of the other community) are stunning - the detail level surpasses the DVDs and the results are AMAZING!!!

Still - Have fun with the (latest/newest) project!

Regards,
Leland

Hey there community - I have been putting my DVD-Upscale-Project on temporary hold because I wanted to give this a shot - including a new workflow, new software being implemented and re-inventing my workflow.

So, here we go with DS9 season 1, episode 1/2 “Emissary” - upscaled from Laser Disc.

I think it’s a definite improvement over what we get from upscaling the DVD.

Ive heard that the laser disk content quality is only superior for the first 2 (maybe 3) seasons, after which point the filming technique changed and the DVD source became comparable.

That’s possible, haven’t had a chance to look beyond season 1 and parts of season 2, but I was really amazed at the quality difference.

The big question: Does the episode “Dax” look better than on DVD?

I will find that out when I get to it 😉

Very good quality. That is the best version of Emissary I’ve seen so far. Without access to the actual 35mm film reels and a 2k scan.

I was really surprised about the quality as well - that being said, the community working on the files uses several Laser Discs per episode, stacking them and then combining the output in order to minimize signal drop-outs and degradation present in the original physical discs.
It’s a lot of hard work and the community as well as its members deserve all the praise.

I’ve read up on the whole Domesday thing and the AstroRes method and its quite interesting, like for OVA anime that no film source exists anymore.

It’s not something i can get into because just buying the equipment much less securing the harder to find laserdiscs, I couldn’t find Emissary period in over a year of looking online.

There has been a complete run on all of Kevin Kobos stock since now everyone knows he offers them for the cheapest price. And everyone and their uncle is now into hoarding and collecting Japanese laserdisc.

There is content on laserdisc worth preserving. Mostly music concerts and such, live music orchestra recordings. Music videos, OVA. Most of the reason for laserdisc still even being a thing is for original edits of films and original sound mixes. Plus some shows did get DVD releases but with horrible Mpeg encodes. And never redone.

Deep Space Nine and Voyager do need the fan remasters.

It’s sad that physical media gets harder to find as time passes. Even collector items can only last so long.

Someone should really fund a sort of (inter-)national library dedicated to preserving physical media - that way, at some point, any company could decide what to remaster.
Or even private people could try their hand at it, as long as the originals remain in the library - the least that could be done would be “scanning/ripping” them and then make the files available for purchase/download.

Anyway, you have a very valid point.
