Splitting up 5.1

Author
Time
Hi- I’ve been using BeSweet to split 5.1 surround tracks into the 6 mono wav’s, and I’ve been getting really lousy results (hissing, extra noise on track- center channel especially). I was wondering what other freeware programs you’d recommend for splitting 5.1 that might give me better results.

Thanks!

I use Hypercupe Transcoder and have been pleased.

digitalfreaknyc, does your tool help up-convert 2.0 sources to 5.1? I've been dying to find a working solution for that.

Hypercube won't do anything else but 5.1 so if you ever want to so simple surround or other, you can't use it. Plus I like AC3 MUCH better. A lot quicker

I wouldn't use something that upconverted from 2.0 to 5.1. I want the original souce and nothing else. I don't even like "fake" 5.1 on official releases (like a lot of Paramount's, for instance).

The issue I have is mixing 2.0 sources with 5.1 sources when 5.1 audio isn't provided with the deleted scenes. I've had to fake it by assigning the 2.0 channels to L and R, usually assigning both to C as well, leaving the sub and the rears empty.

What specifically are you doing that you have a 5.1 source and 2.0 deleted scenes?

Use a VMG menu and you're all set. You have different types in the same DVD without having to do any conversion. What program are you using to author? I use DVD-Lab

Also, with DVD Lab, you can use a bridge, so that you can link the 5.1 segments to the 2.0 segments, for continuous (though not necessarily seamless) playback.

Does anyone have recommendations as to which sound cards can capture the actual AC3 audio off the special edition laserdiscs? I've done some research, and apparently there is a way to do it if the sound card can record in "bit accurate mode" (according to this thread):

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=338286

The funny thing is, I recently e-mailed Creative to ask which of their Soundblaster products has the bit accurate mode capability. They told me none of them can do this (even though someone in the above link may have done it on an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro). Now I'm really confused! I haven't seen this as an advertised feature on any sound card, so is there really such a thing as bit accurate recording capability?

Yes, it's possible - but make sure you have an RF demodulator for your LD player first.

I've used a USB/SPDIF box to do this. It had only SPDIF in and out, and nothing else - boxes with more inputs may or may not be "bit accurate" (the box suffered from occassional jumps, failing to record for a fraction of a second, but it only took two or three goes to record an entire side accurately).

Thanks, guys- I'll try both AC3 tool and Hypercube transcoder.

There's also HeadAC3he, although some of the options were a bit of a mystery to me for a while.
