Idea: Spider-man - Pre-9/11 cut & No-organics cut

Hello all…

Well. With news of the Spider-man 3 teaser being attached to Superman Returns and mention of the original teaser in an article I was reading a few minutes ago, I remembered the original teaser for the first spider-man film and how it was removed after the tragic events in new york five years ago. Now as you’ve probably guessed by now, that’s why I made this thread: to discuss the possible re-insertion of that scene into the final film as well as any other deleted scenes or alternate scenes that could either be re-inserted or preserved.

My skills in editing dvd material like some of the editors here is non-existent, so my purpose in making this is to perhaps spark some interest in preserving or editing the lost scenes from this film for fan-edit dvds or whatever else. Also, to see if this already exists. It’s too cool an idea not to have been done already, I think…

There was some footage of tobey shooting what seemed to be webshooters in a video I saw online years ago. Does anyone here still have it? Are there other scenes like that? I don’t own the dvd so I don’t know what deleted scene is on it.

That’s all I wanted to say. I’ll be back later tonight and tomorrow to see if anyone cared.

I was always under the impression that the scene was never intended to be in the movie, anyway. It was a teaser in the truest sense. I don't think it would fit as it's a throwaway scene.

I do remember reading an interview with either Sam Raimi or Avi Arad about a director's cut DVd when the film came out. the reply was that most of the footage that they shot was in the film and that theatrical release of Spider-Man was Sam's director's cut.

BUT there was wispers of an extended Spider-Man 2 coming out!

I only ever saw that teaser before the Towers attack, but even back then I was fairly positive none of it was going to be in the movie; as caligulathegod mentioned, I presumed it was shot only for the teaser.

I've just done a bit of a search for you though, none of the usual info sources even suggest it was deleted from the movie (suprisingly in IMDB's cases, where 'truth shouldn't get in the way of a good story'!). I searched for a shooting script, but the closest I found was a draft from 2000. I scanned all the way through that, the story seemed pretty similar to the final film (the big difference was Doc Ock featured extensively), but no mention of any bank robberies, escape helicopters, or catching anything between two towers of any kind. There is a scene where Spidey webs a helicopter, but that was to save himself and MJ from hitting the water below.

Both the teaser and posters were pulled from circulation due to the attack, but it doesn't sound like the incident affected the edit of the film, the Towers still feature in many scenes, many CGI that could have been easily edited to remove them, but the producers decided not to bother.

So there is no need to 're-insert' it, but if you still want to do a fanedit then you could of course add it to the film. By the way, there aren't really any deleted scenes on the DVD, so a fanedit would either just shorten the film or be a combination of the two released movies (or it would be something like 'Batman vs Spider-man'!).

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

ah, I see. thanks for doing the research. yeah every news site I've googled about the video contains comments that mostly say the same thing... that the teaser wasn't meant to be used in the final film. (I can't see why. It's a really cool scene.) some debate that since parts of the teaser are still in the film that it was supposed to be used but the idea of showing the buildings trapping an aircraft while in real life that didn't quite happen, would offend some people. I can see that possibility in a way. Whatever the true case, personally, I'd love to see how it'd work within the context of the film. there's also that webshooter footage I remember seeing so long ago. I found it just before coming back here. see: webshooter If this is in high quality anywhere, I'd really pay just to have it. No not really, but it'd be nice to have...

I remember that quote from arad or raimi too, but my gut still tells me that there's something missing from the final film like a chunk was taken out at some point... My spidey edit would include that robbery scene, maybe re-arranging some scenes to make the goblin/spidey story less conveniently timed, adding stuff from the sequel, maybe even somehow making MJ die.. and try to take out any parts I didnt like...It'd be a challenging edit. Maybe I'll do this someday if I learn how to edit video and master the dvd, etc..

I heard about the extended cut of spidey 2 too, about a year ago. Maybe it'll be released before sm3 is.

anyway, thanks for replying true believers.

wesyeed, out.

wouldnt adding the webshooters be pointless since they made it so it would come out of his wrist. but if you did add it you should add in the sceans from part to where he started loseing his powers to make it seem like he forgot to reload it linke in the cartoon.

The intention for the webshooters in the film was to have them simply to help Peter guide/aim his webbing. They would've still been organic. As a result, they were deemed unnecessary and cut from the movie. They were pretty cool though. I recall one of the first downloads available on Sony's Spider-Man website was a webshooter screensaver. The screensaver itself was fairly diappointing though. It didn't really do much.

The DVD has a blooper reel on the second disc which features some deleted footage as well as some on the set flubs and gags.

Not to get all film-student-y, but inclusion of the web-shooter would kill the puberty metaphor that is at the heart of the film. It's essentially an allegory for a young man coming of age, gaining new responsibilities, and measuring his worth by how he handles those responsibilites. The organic webshooters, especially the scene in Parker's bedroom where he can't control them, is, well...you do the math.
