Spence's Obi-Wan Kenobi (V3 Released)

I know that there’s a ton of edits of this floating around, but I’ve been quietly taking a stab at it as well. I’ll try to give some detail here about what might make mine different.

The big stuff:

  • The edit runs roughly 2 hours 21 minutes.
  • I tried to envision what this would’ve looked like if it was a movie as originally intended as opposed to a stretched out miniseries. The majority of notable plot points are retained.
  • Reva is still there, but the last we see of her is getting stabbed on Jabim. It’s implied that she’s dead, but left ambiguous enough that she could show up for further adventures. The whole Lars farmstead sequence is excised.
  • I cut the training duel flashback, and many other instances of seeing Vader out of the suit. The only time I kept was when he and Kenobi are both in their bacta tanks. I think holding off on showing Anakin makes the broken helmet moment stronger. It also screams of “scene that was cool that we cut that we can now add back in because it’s a series”
  • I removed the initial Order 66 flashback, keeping Reva’s motivations less obvious.

Smaller details:

  • I kept my eye on pacing and making this feel like an actual movie with a three act structure. There are huge chunks cut, but also more subtle changes that just trim a line or even a few seconds from a scene.
  • A few, very selective scenes bring in some original Star Wars music. I didn’t want to go too heavy on this, but Leia’s theme and Imperial March make appearances.
  • Selectively added some Gradient wipes as scene transitions.
  • Episode 2 probably gets the most cuts. The entire rooftop sequence is excised, and Reva never puts the bounty out on Kenobi. It can be implied through other dialogue that the Inquisitors put the city on lockdown and have people looking for them. Almost every scene in this section got a little trim.
  • The first Vader duel got some trims for pacing, and to minimize the silliness of Kenobi running away a bunch of times.
  • The rescue from the castle is also heavily trimmed, and Kenobi does not find the frozen bodies. I thought that was cool, but it doesn’t go anywhere with regard to the rest of the plot.
  • Tala’s scene with Reva is also much shorter. She doesn’t try to play the double agent card.
  • The battle on Jabim is much tighter. It doesn’t feel like the Stormtroopers miss a million easy shots anymore.
  • Kenobi’s decision to leave the rebels and lure Vader happens a bit faster to keep the pace high.
  • There are some trims to the big duel. But they were mainly to make the scene flow together well after cutting Reva stuff.
  • I added the standard Star Wars end credits music.

Generally, it’s the same plot as the show, just shrunk down to the necessities to fit a movie length and pace. I’m currently finishing up the audio editing so this should be done fairly soon.

If you have any questions about what I kept or changed, just let me know!

Spence! Long time, buddy.

I love the cuts here, but I’m afraid I liked this far less than you, but this still looks interesting.

I hated every moment of the Vader/Kenobi fight. I hated just about every moment in the Inquisitor base rescue sequence.

But to keep any form of story structure, I can see why you probably have to leave in what you did leave in.z

And it’s interesting enough to make me take a look if you want to toss me a link when ready.

Good to see ya again! Good to see another of the OG’s on here.

Oh trust me, I had many issues with it. It’s my least favorite of the D+ shows so far. Maybe tied with Fett.

This was absolutely intended to be a movie. It’s too easy to see the structure. It’s kind of amazing how much better things start to click with a little pacing injected into it.

Unfortunately I can’t do a whole lot about the abysmal cinematography and action direction.

Sounds like a good time.

I do wonder if you have any thoughts about one particular moment, being when Ben tells Leia she reminds him of someone in Ep2. I think removing drawing a line to Padme allows the audience to assume he means Anakin, which feels more germane to what happens next.

Yes, it also smooths continuity with my own fan edit of ROTS, of course. Just wondering.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Personally, I don’t really care who he alludes to, but I do think it’s kind of nice that she reminds him of Padme. I could go either way on it.

The other issue is a structural one: I need that scene to not be shorter to give Reva time to get there, based on how I’ve cut the previous scenes.

Spence, I think it is cool that you managed to keep the whole series basically, but just trimmed it down to a decent movie length.

I think you should stick with what you have as-is, but it might be worth looking at interviews with the guy who wrote the film screenplay the series expanded upon if you haven’t already. For example, Reva dying was something that happened in his script, but it seems like the rescue from Fortress Inquisitorius wasn’t a part of the original story, nor did any other Inquisitor feature beyond Reva.

Anyway, sounds like you basically have it done, so I wouldn’t spend too much more time on it (especially since you were also pretty dissatisfied with the show anyway).

I read that too. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s possible to completely remove the fortress rescue without it feeling very disjointed. I took a crack at it and wasn’t happy with it. I think Kenobi getting his powers back up to snuff during that sequence is really important, as is some of the Tala stuff.

Ideally, and what was probably the case in the movie script, is that he would only rescue Leia once. The way everything is laid out in the show, I don’t think you can satisfactorily do that.

This looks really similar to what I was hoping to do with the series (Although it sounds like I liked it more than you overall). Unfortunate that you had to cut the duel flashback though, because I think it informs Vader’s actions in Episodes 5 and 6. Without that illustration of Anakin’s impatience, especially around Kenobi, he just seems like he’s making stupid mistakes. The flashback gives it an emotional underpinning.

I think that’s conveyed enough in Kenobi’s “all he will see is me” dialogue with Reva. Either way, the flashback is cool in the series but stops a movie dead.

That makes sense. Regardless, yours is the edit I’m most looking forward to.

So my first version of this turned out better than anticipated. It’s “show it to people” ready, I think.

Message me if you want to check it out.

To everyone who messaged me: So for some reason it came out looking too bright. I’m fixing it and will have an updated one rendered overnight and posted tomorrow. If you’re still waiting on a link, that’s why you haven’t gotten one yet.

If you already got a link, the edit is exactly the same so you can just watch that one and maybe crank the brightness down on your TV? Or I’ll send you a new link tomorrow.

Sorry about that, it didn’t look as bright on my PC screen as it does on my TV.

This seems to be a very straightfoward edit, essentially following the story in the most linear and effecient form possible (in my opinion atleast!) without the added fluff that dragged it out for 6 episodes, which is really nice and what I wanted. Is it alright if I can ask for a link to this?

I’ve watched the first half and got interrupted, planning on watching the second half tomorrow. Overall I think you did a really good job condensing things down. Everything’s coherent, but there are times where I feel like the pacing is a little too breakneck, as if we’re just zooming through the plot without a moment to linger on anything. It’s something I’ve struggled with in my own edits as well. I’ll have more detailed thoughts after I finish the whole thing.

Super cool poster ArtisDead created for this:

Did ArtisDead remove the poster as the links dead for me?

I read your comment about keeping the fortress in and how you feel it felt like something big was missing when left out but surely completely removing it will also remove the many issues that episode had? 🤔

Getting your edit at the mo so will comment here more once watched. 😁👍

In my opinion, losing that scene loses a lot of interesting character development for Obi-Wan, and also loses a lot for Tala, Roken, etc. The rest of the story doesn’t really work without it.

I look at my edits more from a storytelling perspective vs a “cut things I don’t like” perspective. If cutting something I don’t like actively harms the story, then I keep it. If that makes sense.

This is one of two edits being discussed here of OWK that I wanted to see.
Disclaimer, I enjoy the show pretty much as is. I know a lot of people here have issues with a lot of it, I am not one of those folks. That doesn’t mean that I am open to seeing what someone else thinks is a different way of presenting it.

This edit is pretty lean and moves along at a good pace. I think that a lot of people here would enjoy watching it and I would be curious to see the reaction of someone who has never seen the show watching this first and then seeing the uncut six episodes as a directors cut so to speak and gauging their reaction.

The cuts made to the source material are done very ably and aren’t disruptive.

I would have kept the Teeka scene which is cut here, but that’s just how I roll, anything with Jawas and Tusken Raiders is a good thing in my editorial world.

Thanks, very much, for sharing this with me, Spence.

So, because of my weak Internet connection at the hotel I was just able to watch like 4min so far, but I have to ask, why those old 70s logos etc? 😉

I smiled like a crazy old man when I saw those logos.
