The Special Editions...

I don't miss the orange blur under Luke's speeder.
I like the fact that in the SE they fixed the snow speeders so that they are actually opaque and not see-through.
I also like the fixing of the Rancor scene...and the fact that they finally (in 2004) removed that strange blob floating next to the emperor's face.

I guess that's it.

The Rancor wasn't truly "fixed" until the DVD release. As said, the Snowspeeders were not corrected as ILM claims they were, and the Emperor's slug is still there, no? If anything, more problems have been created with the DVD than fixed. In my opinion anyway.

I liked the new Ewok song .

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Anything I don't notice.

Yeah, it looks a hell of a lot better.

Infact, I never realized how bad the original looked until I saw the DVD version. I can't believe Lucas didn't change it in the 1997 version, especially after pointing out the matte ines on the ESB VHS tape.

I can forgive some matte lines and boxes, but the fucking up of the lightsabers is inexcusable.

I liked the re-coloring of the space shots of R2 from black to blue.

The re-done approch to cloud city. and new windows in there. The fix to Han's jacket in ESB. And the re-done battle of Yavin.

I liked cloud city too. What was wrong with Han's Jacket?

War does not make one great.

He was wearing a white shirt in all the ehots in the carbon freezing chamber. Yet the lighting made it appear as though he was wearing a black jacket in some shots. This is bad continuity, and ws fixed in the DVD release.

And add the cg ropes in Return of the Jedi to my list.

Han's jacket wasn't noticeable and even when pointed out I knew it was just the lighting. Now it's blatant.

I'm glad they finally improved the Rancor scene, I always thought it was the worst visual effects sequence in the whole trilogy, never understood why the Jedi Rocks scene was considered more important than fixing this scene way back in 97.

I'm pretty sure that when they were making the special editions, there was a lot of talk and publicity of the celebrations on Coruscant being a special sneak preview of one of the 'exciting new planets' that will feature prominently in the prequals, but I guess this would only mean something to those that were in the know.

My Guilty Pleasure of the Special Editions are the changes on Cloud City and the Battle of Yavin

Actually I only recall them mentioning that once. "So in a way, the last shot of the old trilogy, is actually the first shot of the new trilogy." Something of that nature. AS cool as it was at the time, it still peevs me that my first glimpse of Coruscant outside of my mind's eye was of it doing something that defied all logic and canon.

I was thinking more on the lines of Coruscant, the hotbed of Imperial supporters("there were people who loved the Empire? Hard to tell from this version"), partying. The EU had basically established it as a place you didn't go unless you loved the Empire. Hence why Coruscant was renamed Imperial Center. I could see such a thing in the Alien sector, but not the Square. What was really ridiculous was the lone stormtrooper being heived into the air. A lone stormtrooper! How often have we seen a single Stormie running around? Even if they had killed whomever was with him, you mean to tell me there aren't other platoons around? Imperial Center had it's own private fleet of six Star Destroyers that were there even during Endor. If things got that out of hand, all it'd take is a single call. Before you knew it, whole squads of Stormtroopers would be firing into the crowd(which happened in the EU). If all hell breaks loose, I could imagine the orbiting Destroyers firing on the troublesome areas. Rioting on Imperial Center was virtually non-existant from what I've read. But I really hated it because it gives the impression that everyone hated the Empire. Especially given how the PT makes the Galactic Republic look less than desirable to it's citizens, it just doesn't add up.

It's a movie and he needed a "happy ending" to wrap things up, so we all asume the empire simply gave up when the second death star blowed away.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Or maybe the partying when Palpatine died was punished severly, like with thousands of excecutions or something similarly evil.

Correct, it is a film. One can't end it on a sad note. I never said I didn't understand why the scene is how it is. Though why have it at all? Problem is DC, that these executions aren't on screen. That gives the impression that everyone hated the empire. It like the idea that ALL stormies are clones. Kind of ruins the whole "small band of rebels" idea, when ones lead to think that the entire Galaxy hates the Emperor.

But if most of the Galaxy liked the Empire, then killing the Emperor wouldn't be that much of a victory...

Pricisely. You've read the EU, how long did it take to fully establish the New Republic as the dominant seat of power? It certainly didn't happen that night. I'm not saying everyone loved the Empire. But the impression the SE gives is that its reviled. If everyone loves the Rebels, then dopesn't that make Star Wars about a galxy trying to overthrow a madman who somehow built a huge fleet and took over Coruscant? I thought it was about a small group of insurgents trying to restore a previous politcal ideal due to the unjustness of the current one. It gives the whole nobel/hopeless cause feeling.
There was this awesome post on macrossworld.com that's kind of related.

With begs of pardon to the Pythons:

Luke: Yeah, all right, Han. Don't labor the point. And what has the Empire ever given us in return?
Rebel2: Skinned prostheses?
Luke: What?
Rebel2: Skinned prostheses.
Luke: Oh yeah, yeah. They did give us that. That's true, yeah.
Rebel3: And sanitation.
Leia: Oh yeah, the sanitation, Luke . Remember what the planets used to be like.
Luke: Yeah, all right, I'll grant you the skinned protheses (looks at own hand) and the santation are two things the Empire has done...
Lando: And the guarded hyperspace lanes.
Luke: Well, yeah. Obviously the hyperspace lanes, I mean the hyperspace lanes go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation, the skinned protheses, and the well regulated hyperspace lanes...
Rebel4: Ability to destroy planets.
Rebel2: Medicine.
Rebel5: Academy Education.
Luke: Yeah, yeah, all right. Fair enough...
Rebel1: No Gungans.
Rebels: Oh, yeah <mumbled agreement>
Wedge: Yeah. Yeah, That's something that we'd really miss, Luke, if the Empire left, huh.
Rebel6: Better ship designs.
Leia: And it's safe to walk the in streets at night now, Luke.
Han: Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it, the only ones who could in a place like this.
Rebels: Huhuhuh. Huhuhuhuhuh.
Luke: All right. But apart from the sanitation, the medicine, the Academy, no Gungans, public order, the ability to destroy planets, guarded hyperspace lanes, better ship designs, and realistically skinned prostheses... What has the Empire ever done for us?
Rebel2: Brought peace?
Luke: Oh, peace. Shaddup.

I thought the biggest beef people had with the Empire besides the destruction of Alderaan was their treatment of non-humans.

And perhaps it wasn't the Empire that was hated at all, but Palpatine. A bunch of people hate George W. Bush without hating America; people hated Hitler without hating Germany, and people hated Hussein
without hating the nation of Iraq.

It's possible that these people were only celebrating Palpatine's death and were still loyal to the Empire. It's also pretty clear in the EU that many Moffs and officers hated Palpatine. The Empire under Thrawn was much more efficent because Thrawn wasn't evil per-se, but just really cold... and the similar goes for Pealeon.
