I found out what pan and scan means according to Wikipedia.

Pan and scan is a method of adjusting widescreen film images so that they can be shown within the proportions of a standard definition 4:3 aspect ratio television screen, often cropping off the sides of the original widescreen image to focus on the composition's most important aspects. Some film directors and film enthusiasts disapprove of pan and scan cropping, because it can remove up to 45% of the original image on 2.35:1 films or up to 53% on earlier 2.55:1 presentations, changing the director or cinematographer's original vision and intentions.

So I wonder what George thinks about those VHS tapes.

He thinks they're great. In fact, whenever someone wanted to see the original versions of the OT, he said to watch their VHS copy to see the movies in the best quality available.

No I meant the pan and scan versions and well he obviously does not care about the fans yet we can still see the English words on the tractor beam and we can still hear Jeremy Bullochs voice and we can still see Sabastian Shaw's eyebrows and head.

If Lucas wanted us to absolutely never ever see OOT, he wouldn't have allowed  the GOUT. He just wants the masses to think, that SE are the only ones available in HD. 90% of so called "SW fans" don't even know there is a forum called "originaltrilogy.com", and that there are people so talented, they could actually make original Star Wars happen again.

Until few month ago I didn't even know "special editions" existed. I watched SW like 500 times when I was a kid, old VHS P&S tapes (it was OOT), but somehow not in the last 15 years or so, except for maybe 10 min pieces when it was on TV. Then I decided to watch it again. Slapstick droids. WTF. I googled "star wars theatrical edition" and ended up here...

I know just there was just some unchanged GOUT stuff in the 97 version which I mentioned above.

If I get these captures of the movies onto multiupload I want to know of someone is willing to cut out the little black line on the side of the image and cut out the black widescreen bars that where part of the tape and replace them with new widescreen bars.

Do you want this done to make the black bars 'better'?

But, to answer the question/request, I am capable of completing such a task.

Yes that and because if I put the movie in fullscreen mode it almost looks stretched but I also noticed the theatrical subtitles are on the widescreen bars so we need to figure a way the matte them in and give this a proper theatrical kind of presentation.

Also here is what the files and folder names are

Folder 1 Star Wars Trilogy 1997 Cain's Capture

The Empire Strikes Back. avi

Return Of The Jedi. avi

Folder 2 bonus material

Capturing The 1997 VHS Tapes( a small 10 minute video about how I did these captures, coming soon to YouTube)

Please note the mini documentary's are from my second fullscreen captures because they obviously did not change between the fullscreen tapes and the widescreen ones the only other difference I found was apart from the movies being in widescreen was that the tapes also had the trailers from the 1997 release of each movie. I decided to have everything split into separate videos so people can see the movies and see the added stuff as bonus material.

I still need to know if someone can matte in the subtitles.

Well my plan of this has changed a bit it won't be a VHS preservation it will be a Laserdisc preservation instead because it is better quality than the VHS.

Well since this preservation by me is being made for DVD rather than BD this wont be very high quality but I will make it look like this was a true DVD release from 1997.

Well I ordered a Laserdisc player on Ebay and it came to my doorstep although I have to wait til my next pay to order the full 97 Laserdisc set while I was waiting I decided to do some research on Laserdisc since I never used a Laserdisc player before my childhood was just VHS until my mom bought a DVD player somewhere in the 2000's and I realize that they could not fit a full movie on a single Laserdisc so all Laserdiscs are double sided and no wonder they didn't last long apart from the absurd disc size and the reason why I am only putting this in standard definition is because there already is Team Blu's preservation of it and Harmy's Respecialized Edition of the first movie although I hear there has been lots of aliasing present on Laserdiscs even the Laserdisc of the 2006 GOUT DVD so I will eliminate as much of that using the 2004 DVD as possible and I don't think it will be much of an effort than I will fix the widescreen bars still so it will look even more presentable on 16:9 screens I will also remove the side bars that will become present when I make the captures.

Yeah Yeah I get it my Grammar is off and yeah my Laserdisc history is off because I never actually used a Laserdisc player as I said my childhood was VHS and as I said before I am not 100% technical about everything so forgive me on the uptake please and thank you. I will post another update once I have made the order at the end of the month.

While some would argue that the best way to learn is to make mistakes (and I'd normally agree), it just seems that you're throwing yourself into a project you don't really understand, while all the time telling us - not asking us - what you don't know. It's like a twitter feed from a pinball.

To answer your initial question, yes - I for one would love to see a preservation of the 1997 VHS tapes, which I fondly remember going out and buying in my first month at university and then watching with a group of friends on a 14" TV.

But now we've bounced from pan&scan VHS tapes, which you didn't know very much about (until Wikipedia helped out), to letterboxed laserdiscs, which you know even less about.

There are some incredibly dedicated and knowledgeable folks on here, turning out work of astonishing quality - if you want to play in the same sandpit, at least make a basic effort to do some research and fill in the gaps in your own knowledge.

And, as I frequently remind the nine-year-olds I teach, if you want to be taken remotely seriously, work on the grammar. Your last post suggests that you know at least the basics of full stop / period placement, and since it makes the difference between appearing competent and incompetent I'd really advise that you use them.

IMO, FWIW etc.
