Hi Guys,
This is where i am at on the Japanese Special Collection, what i am trying to do is,remove the japanese text, and crop and recenter the video, because i think this set is pretty cool, and would look a whole lot better without the jap text LOL,soon as i figure all this cropping,re-sizing,and filtering,i should be able to buzz right along, also still trying to figure out CCE LOL,still getting some jerky video after CCE encode, but here is what i am looking at right now:

i am still learning the filters,i know i have to do some tweaking, but what i notice when running the video,it looks bad on my PC in Anamorphic, cant figure out why.
I also downsized a little bit so I wouldnt take up so much space.
so if any one has any ideas please let me know
thanks for your time
and a special thanks to Moth3r and Grinder, you guys are a TON of help
DJ
ps they are also in bitmap, that is how VDUBMod spits them out.
filters i am messing with(AviSynth filters):
autocrop, denoise, dust, limitedsharpenbeta & limitedsharpenfaster, seesaw(havent got this one working yet)and all the supporting filters.

Sounds good, DJ. This is a set that deserves the full treatment. Look forward to the results. Only suggestion is go easy on the filters.

right now i am just using the default () settings(on the filters), just to see if it would even make a difference,my whole problem now is CCE,i got some settings from Moth3r,but now that i am messing with the video,my encodes are jerky again, but if i just do a straight encode(just like the dark/sega set)with the template it encodes right,so something changed, damn i need a CCE book LOL,and just getting some of these filters to even work is a friggin job,i still havent got SeeSaw to work yet,and i really want to see what this looks like, Didée at Doom9 is a genious.

I'd definitely be interested in an anamorphic version of those discs. I liked the original version mostly because of the Japanese subtitles, it was like watching old bootlegs of Eraserhead and Bad Taste I had on VHS all over again, but I think the picture on these laserdiscs is good enough to warrant the removal of the subtitles.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Glad to see you are going after this project, it should make another great set.

DJ, the CCE template I gave you was for encoding 29.97fps interlaced captures.

It will need to be modified for encoding 23.976fps IVTC'ed progressive video. I assume you're applying IVTC, as you cannot resize to anamorphic unless you do.

EDIT: Also, maybe you should think of another name for the project. The term "Jap" could be considered offensive.

I was gonna suggest the same thing, Moth3r. No offense to you or your project, DJ, but the term "Jap" went out of style after WW2. It's kind of considered the same as the "N-word" among Japanese Americans. Not considered good etiquette at all.

Just FYI.

I cringe every time I read "jap," since my wife is Japanese and I lived in Japan for several years. I'm sure that in most cases, the use of this term doesn't stem from some evil intent; but it's still bad form.

How about using the Internet suffix, JA? Or the Olympic identifier, JPN? Or, shorten 'Japanese Special Collection' to JSC?

I still figure this set is inferior to the THX versions, due to video noise. The small increase in sharpness and avoidance of the very few motion artifacts doesn't really improve the viewing experience all that much.

or how about the nice short title:

The not so Japanese Japanese Special Collection presented in Anamorphic Widescreen

or

How about simply "Japanese Anamorphic WideScreen"

or

JAWS

Nice, but not specific enough! There's the Special Collection, Definitive Collection, Collector's Set, 1997 Special Edition, and 2000 Special Edition to worry about.

those pics above will be updated soon with better shots, also if there are any AviSynth users reading this, can someone please tell me which of these are better "converttoyuy2" or "converttoyv12",and why?
i see i have to use one of these before i can do anything with my script.
thanks again
also i didnt mean to offend anyone,i just thought since Jap is short for Japanese it would be OK,I had NO idea that the shortened version like that is offensive, sorry guys.
but i am going to leave the word Japanese in Special Collection, because that is what it is,that is how it is advertised, but instead of the other i will use "Cropped Edition" is this better?

It was pretty clear from context that you weren't deliberately trying to offend, so I don't think anyone's going to be too upset. We've got people from all over the place here on this forum, and it's inevitable that honest mistakes will be made. I still remember being bewildered when the Brits I knew in Japan started laughing uncontrollably when I told them there was a store called "Fanny's Fabrics" here in Vancouver. Little did I know at the time that "fanny" has somewhat different connotations in Britain than it does in North America...

Anyhoo.

The question was about AviSynth: Depending on what input your MPEG-2 encoder needs, YUY2, YV12 or RGB might be needed. The encoded MPEG-2 DVD stream will be YV12, which is 4:2:0, and which is why many people who are starting with DVD as a source like to use YV12. Anything more is sort of overkill if all you're going to do is re-encode. YUY2 is, I think, 4:2:2, so more colour information is retained during processing. RGB is effectively 4:4:4 (although it's not planar), and therefore really good for processing, but not good for space and processing speed.

If I was starting with LD-sourced stuff capped to HuffYUV as either YUY2 or RGB, then I wouldn't want to go to YV12 until the encoding stage. If it was capped as DV (which is 4:2:0 for NTSC -- same as DVD), then I wouldn't worry too much about conversion to YV12 before encoding.

[My disclaimer: I just dredged this up from memory; I didn't do any recent research. One word: Google. Another couple of words: Doom9.org]

I believe you should use converttoyuy2 if you are encoding with CCE, because CCE doesn't accept YV12 input directly.

Funny thing, language. In the post above Karyudo has used "Brits" to refer to us British, which is not in the slightest offensive.

Were you always this obnoxious on these boards, or is this a recent development?

OK converttoyuy2 it is,i have been having better luck with that anyways, also now that i have IVTC'd and resized it looks alot better than the above pics,so those are not accurate at the moment, damn if this turns out good,i will definitely go back and redo some of my other stuff, like Blade Runner.
1 more question, when using Citizens aspect ratio calc. you use the dimensions of the video alone right?no black bars,if this is the case, than i could just use autocrop to give me my dimensions, which are 704*280,crop(10,57,704,280),then resize to 720*382 per Citizens calc. then addborders(0,60,0,60),does this sound correct for my anamorphic WS?
thanks for your time

dark jedi I love what you have done with this project so far, looks promissing. By the Way In what ways is the Japanese Special Collection Better than the definitive collection or the u.s. releases with the subs removed that were taken from the special collection.

The Japanese Special collection is one of only a few star wars trilogy laserdisc releases I do not own yet.

Laserdisc collecting has become a very expensive hobby for the star wars collector.

One Laser set I'd love to see transfered is the german "Silver Screen Collection" Or the "French Coffret collector" from 1994 packaged with from star wars to jedi.

skyjedi, if you look back through the X0 project thread, you'll see discussion of the Japanese SC versus US versions. And if you want to see the French Coffret Trilogie on DVD, check out Arnie.d's thread.

Hi guys, just an update, for now i am scrapping the anamorphic WS versions(for now any ways),just cant get the IVTC right in the opening of ANH(and cant figure out how to do it manually),and even with the filters i am using,it still looks like shit on my hidef 62' WS tv(for that matter ALL captures by everyone look like shit on my tv)the only SW dvd's that look good on my tv are ADM's and OCP's,because they use the official release for the most part, however i am still working on Blade Runner Criterion Collection in anamorphic widescreen,so far looks pretty good and i have some help with this one.
I will still release this *cropped* set though, but it will be in 4:3 Letterbox form, and it will NOT be filtered, but will be encoded using a higher bitrate using CCE SP,and the art will probably just be the original Dark\Sega art modified for this release.
sorry guys just cant get this IVTC thing right to make WS(and i am so frustrated with this now,i just want to finish ANH and delete off HD and move on to ESB),but Blade Runner worked well, and looks pretty good on my tv,go figure
