Space Battleship Yamato / Star Blazers

Ok, stuff like this just re-awakens my inner-child, and gives me goose bumps.

I grew up with Star Blazers (Hurry Star Force, only 245 days left!), and then became endeared to the more mature original Japanese T.V. versions, and feature films when I got a bit older.

Now it took a long time, but the new film is out in Japan, and it's a

HUGE HIT!

According to Tokyograph, the new film is set in 2220 (17 years after the events of “Final Yamato”), at a time when Earth is threatened by an expanding black hole. As 300 million people prepare for evacuation, the fleet is suddenly attacked. The Yamato, now captained by the 38-year-old Susumu Kodai, is forced to retaliate. Also aboard are Susumu’s wife Yuki and their daughter Miyuki.

Word from the fans is that the new Yamato movie has just the right blend of old and new animation styles.  The film has already found a U.S. distributor, and it's not going to be Voyager.

And...

Also in Yamato news, a teaser trailer for a new Live Action Yamato movie was recently released. I don't know if this one is going to deliver, but the producers are spending about $20 million U.S. dollars on it.  It should be out December 2010.

oh yes, there are.  ;)

We're off to outer space!
we're leaving Mother Earth!
to save the human race!
Our Star Blazers!
Searching for a distant star!
heading off to Iscandar!
leaving all we love behind!
who knows what dangers we'll find!
We must be strong and brave!
Our home we've got to save!
and if we don't in just one year,
Mother Earth will disappear!
Fighting with the Gamilons,
we won't stop until we've won!
Then we'll return and when we arrive,
the Earth will survive with
Our Star Blazers!

I must see both of this movies!

But I do have one question.   Is the ship in the new movie a new one?  I thought the Yamato got destroyed in Final Yamato?

Considering that the live action film is directed by the same person who did the first yamato animated feature it should be faithful, unlike that bad disney starblazers that got cancelled.

I just hope they don't go the JJ Abrams route.  The trailer did look a bit abrams trek like, so i not sure if thats bad or good.

Really don't need my childhood memories ruined again.  Like every other reimagining out there.

Thankfully George Lucas has nothing to do with this, JJ Abrams, Michael Bay etc.

Nishizaki went and did the animated film without Matsumoto who already tried to rebirth the franchise but was not allowed to use the iconic music, or ship so his ova series sucked.  Also Mr N. did yamato 2520 which went nowhere despite some nice symphonic music and designs by the guy who worked on blade runner.

The story is almost identical to what they had in the 90's with some minor changes.  But back then it was going to be 100% hand animated maybe they considered using a little cgi, don't know.  And the character designer was the person who worked on neon genesis evangelion and i liked those designs better than what ended up in the film.  Along with the yamato refit seemed a nod to the 1979 star trek enterprise refit, they even built a model of the new ship for the filiming.

But nish went to prison and lost the rights so we had to wait til 2004 before any rumblings of a rebirth film came to be heard.

The Disney Live action was bad on so many levels though the cgi would probably been great considering they were going to sink hundreds of millons of dollars into a trilogy, but only the first screenplay was ever written.  The USS Arizona, and huge ripoff of the star wars trilogy except set in our own universe. I only wish disney also lost all rights to the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs.  Their John Carter movie is going to suck and be a bad ripoff of Avatar.

It will be just like in the anime when they rebuilt the reckage of the Earth vessel into a space battlecruiser.  Instead this time rebuilt from the wreckage incased in a space iceberg left by  the aftermath of aquarious.  Sounds laughable i know, but this is science fiction.

I prefer Matsumoto's more obscure series, Galaxy Express 999. Like the nerd I am.
