Source of the sample videos on starwars.com?

Hi everybody,

Perhaps I’m telling old news, but did any of you notice, that the sample videos from the OT on starwars.com are not sourced from the bluray? The color grading is very different:

and they also appear to be far more detailed. Remember this shot from the Mike Verta bluray/Legacy comparison:

What is the source of these samples?

I wonder if they’re planning on putting out a 4k special edition at some point. After all, there were reports that the OT Alamo screenings were from a new master. Do any of the StarWars.com video samples contain clips that can be compared to the Reliance Media sample? And while another SE release would be unfortunate, it would at least provide better quality footage for a future Despecialized Edition.

The plot thickens.

DrDre, have you tried comparing those clips with the blu-ray to see if the framing is different?

Didn’t this already happen before, and it turned out to be nothing exciting?

Oh phooey, Frink. You don’t even get excited when they change the homescreen images on sw.com to a screenshot from the OT!

If this is a new transfer of the SE, it’s a shame that it still seems to have that magenta cast on the flashes.

So I only managed to download a standard definition version of that video from the site. But here are a couple comparisons with the Blu-ray to get a sense of the colors:

The website version does look more green. Maybe that means that they scanned the 1997 negative? Because the 97 version is more green as a result of trying to match a Tech print, right?

Finally got a chance to look at this on a computer rather than a phone, and it really does look significantly different. CHEWBAKAspelledwrong’s point about the sand people attack scene has reminded me of those claims someone (Devin Faraci I think?) made last year about a new cut of the SE with Han shooting first being in the works. Could this be that? If it is and they are indeed rolling back certain changes for the next SE release, I would have hoped they’d nix the 2011 rocks.

EDIT: one of the starwars.com clips that I watched to check this out was Ben and Luke in the hut on Tatooine. I just watched an EW video that happened to include a few shots from that scene from the blu-ray, and it’s pretty night and day.

Hmm, interesting. Still this source still leaves A LOT to be desired in terms of the colors, but I can’t complain too much about a noticeable improvement over the current Blu-ray.

Are we looking at the same thing? I took a screenshot of one of the videos in question and compared it to the blu-ray:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/189547
It only required a small color adjustment to closely approximate the Blu-ray, and the cropping/warping is identical. The Blu-ray also has more detail, probably because it isn’t compressed for the internet.

It’s the Blu-ray with a small paint job.

The question still remains: Why? Why would they go through the effort of getting the colours ever so slightly different from the Blu-Ray? Would it simply come from the rendering process used?

Maybe someone working on the site decided that the Blu-ray was too crappy looking to show, so they did some adjustments on the sly. Perhaps Lucas himself didn’t realize just how bad it looked on the disc so for the online segments they applied a LUT to make it better. Who knows, Lucasfilm is anything but consistent in their decision making.

I’m imagining some guy on their website team. “Jesus, what the hell is wrong with the colors on these clips they sent me? Well, we can fix that.”

Do any of the official site clips overlap with the brief snippets from RMW’s showreel?

I fail to understand why this is still a discussion. This is actually a fairly common practice–it’s akin to an animation studio using a cel frame instead of a still from the finished movie in advertising.

Never have I met a fandom so desperate to grasp for straws as this one. It’s brought us great things, but oh boy do people get excited over nothing 'round these parts.

Lots of people get excited over round parts.

I may have misread that.
