Something that's always bothered me about the Prequels

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post, but I've been lurking around browsing the threads for a while.

Anyway, you'll have to forgive me if this has already been mentioned or seems like an irrelevant detail, but the thing that has always bothered me most about the prequels is....

R2D2's rocket boosters!

I don't know. It just really irritates me that he suddenly sprouts them at the end of episode 2, the beginning of episode 3, but never throughout the other 4 of 6 Star Wars movies. I might even go so far as to say that I wish George had added them in to his most recent edits of the original trilogy. It bothers me that much.

Am I alone? And has anyone worked on or seen a fan edit where these have somehow been cleverly removed?

Well, the official continuity has already explained why this is. According to Lucasfilm, every R2 unit has a warranty of 20 years. After that they are not guaranteed to work perfectly. So, since over 20 years had passed by the time of the OT, he had expired. Another possible explanation is evidenced in the droids animated series. In that series, with each owner, R2 gets his parts and tools changed and customised. All it takes is for an owner to remove the rockets, which is likely what happened. That's the storyline reason why he didn't have them. In reality, however, it was obviously due to technology limitations and such. It's also just another example of Lucas' vision changing. . Hope that answers your question.

Well, heck. Maybe someone should add a CGI booster scene into the classic trilogy. Maybe help R2 navigate the stairs in Mos Eisley.

The flying R2-D2 is not the droid you're looking for.

The thing that annoys me about the prequels is… the prequels.

He will release something daft like that, but we will still all rush out and buy it! ;-)

Nahh, in the next release he will decide it is yet another area to inject "humour", and will have R2 lighting his own fart instead of using his boosters.

I wonder when he's going to release a special edition of the prequels, adding back in parts that fulfill his "vision"?
