Just wanted to chime in here and say I'm glad one of us was able to acquire that LD. I probably would have bid on it as well had I known about the auction.

I first heard about this last week from one of the news stories that popped up about the facebook page. Then earlier this week, I had two different people come up to me and ask if I'd heard about the long-lost Star Wars LD of old footage and blooper reels that had been found (clearly they'd gotten the news from CNN or some other outlet that also had the facts mixed up).

Anyway, I'm just glad to see all the news I've been hearing about the past week originated with someone connected to the OT community. :)

The best analogy I read was someone's tag here, the SE is like having someone run a long scratch down the side of your car with a key. It doesn't affect the performance of even the look of your car all that much, it would equate to less than 1% of the paintwork being changed, but every time you looked at your car it would piss you off, and you couldn't help feeling annoyed and wondering why someone would do that to you.

No disrespect to you the the person's sig and i am against the changes Lucas made but it is a poor analogy.  Star Wars was Lucas creation if anything he was keying his own car not ours.

Now its Disney's car.

Star Wars might have been Lucas' original idea, but it wasn't his creation.

Hundreds (thousands?) of people contributed to the creation of Star Wars, including some who put more time and effort (and therefore had a bigger impact) into it than George Lucas himself.

Very few people create an entire film in isolation. George Lucas certainly didn't.

The idea Star Wars belonged solely to George Lucas–or that any movie belongs solely to its director–discredits and devalues the innumerable contributions made by all the people involved.

I do however  think making changes to another directors film like return of the Jedi when the man who made it is dead is another thing.

Richard Marquand is dead and every thing since the 1997 version of Jedi is an abomination to me as a fan.

Kershner is dead now as well but when alive he was okay with the changes made to empire so as much as i hate them there not as bad to me as changing the stuff on JEDI.

As for star wars again Lucas directed it i like the 77 version the best, but it was his movie and if the oot was released on blu ray all the years of fan hatred would probably be made moot or subside.

Prolly the closest anyone's gotten to a one-man film.

I've seen that, it's somewhat good. Don't know what it has to do with the thread though...

Since the car part of the analogy is clearly more important than illustrating how frustrating it is to be forced to put up with unwanted alterations, I'll run with that:

We're not talking about a personal car that George Lucas keeps in his garage at home. We're talking about a fleet of cars being sold worldwide with unwanted alterations deliberately added at the factory as standard features to all new models. It's infuriating to know that you either have to settle for a worn-out used car, or a new one that's almost what you want, but with really annoying alterations that you can't opt out of.

The Affordable Health Care Act might also serve as a good analogy, especially the inability to opt out.

So... is whoever bought it planning to share it?

Author

It's being shared, bit by bit, on Facebook.  I've been downloading the videos.

Ah, yes, good point.

I suppose I meant - will someone be sharing a complete capture of this on a popular torrent site that we sometimes use to share stuff that we own the rights to?

I doubt it. The owner of the LD seems to be more concerned with the "glory" of it than anything else.

FFS. We make a quick dirty capture just so we could get this footage out there as soon as possible so that it could reach a wide audience before we spend more time and money to capture this thing in the highest quality to share,  and now we get accused of glory hunting? Next time we find anything like this maybe we should keep it to ourselves like so many other collectors would do.

Well, whatever their motivations, I am glad they are sharing it in any fashion. It could have gone to a collector that kept it 100% to themselves. There is some really interesting stuff on there.

It is quite likely too that they can't capture the whole thing easily, discs like that are often difficult to read, so they may well be posting clips as they are able to extract them.

I didn't know that "[spending] more time and money to capture this thing in the highest quality to share" was ever on the table.

Furthermore, I didn't know that you were still involved. I was directing that comment specifically at the person posting the clips on Facebook.

Some of the replies from the owner of that Facebook account seemed to indicate that a "high quality" capture is not in-the-works. I don't have access to Facebook at the moment, but I remember one justifying the logo with words like "we don't want our hard work to be used by someone else".

So... forgive me for flippantly making that remark. I never intended to accuse you of "glory hunting". I got the wrong impression from the Facebook page and I'm sorry.

I've also slashed-out my original comment.

I seriously doubt the owner was looking for the limelight. That it has gotten this level of media attention was unexpected.

So, is it disc rot, or is the disc physically damaged in some way?

Sorry for snapping the way I did. Its just that we've been having to deal with a lot of people on the facebook page constantly complaining about the quality, the fact that we've watermarked the video, that we're only posting the videos in chunks, that we're not uploading them to youtube or that they demand that we post them elsewhere because they cant view them on their mac. We've even bern flooded with people threatening to report us to disney and lucasfilm to get us shut down. Its rediculous.

Now the disc was unplayable when we got it. It was scratched yo death, even though the ebay listing stated that there were only some minor surface scratches and plays perfectly. We could have sent it straight back to the seller for a refund, after all $700 is a lot of money to waste. But this would have probably meant that this could have gone back into obscurity.  So we took a chance because we wanted to share this.

Well, my only complaint was the bit by bit reveals, and only then because I was worried the wrath of the Mouse might descend on the project.  However, it is obvious that Disney is already well aware of this, and if they haven't threatened any legal action yet, I highly doubt they ever will.  So I'm over that problem.  I'm very grateful for the project as it currently stands.

That's facebook for you. Disney and the Mouse would have to be in a parallel dimension not to know about this with all the media coverage anyway. What would these little trolls actually do, send them an email? BFD! ;)

As I've said before, there ought to be people over at the Laserdisc Database knowledgeable about dealing with badly scratched LD's.

In theory the disc and contents would be property of editdroid anyway, which wasn't part of Lucasfilm during the sale to Disney.
