Someone please explain why there is a 50's diner in the Star Wars universe... — Page 2

Yeah, I knew that, and I guess it does make sense, but I'd still think that the thought would occur to someone before then. Obi-Wan gets close with the incomplete thought, but that Jocasta Nu is the worst. "If it's not there, it doesn't exist," even though all the signs point elsewhere.

And good BTTF2 reference, Sessler.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

It's a shame that the scene's were changed from the script. According to here The droid waitress was a human. Also, here has some deleted dialog that is a lot better and, makes it less of a naive library keeper. Especially, these lines:

    JOCASTA NU (continuing)
    There are some inconsistencies here.
    Maybe the planet you're seeking
    was destroyed.

    OBI-WAN
    Wouldn't that be
    on record?

    JOCASTA NU
It ought to be, unless it was very
recent. (shakes her head) I hate to say it,
but it looks like the system you're
    searching for doesn't exist.

Oh my god, that library dialogue is so much better that way. In the movie she just sounds like some sort of arrogant library bitch.

"I know everything Obi-Wan. You are just some stupid Jedi Knight while I am brilliant. This planet does not exist. Period. End of story. *snap snap*"

Yeah, thanks, twister. That version certainly uses a bit more logic than what we saw on the screen. Being destroyed definitely makes sense, and it makes her seem much less bitchy. And the one line they did keep, "I'm sorry, but the planet you're looking for doesn't exist," seems so much different in that context. Wow.

And the information that Kamino was destroyed makes it seem so much more... frustrating of a mystery. It's like, "Okay! Yeah! I found out where this dart came from! Oh, but the planet's destroyed. Now what do I do?" rather than, "Hmm, duhhh, this planet's missing. I don't get it. It should be here, but the librarian says it isn't, so it must not be."

You're 100% right, but it has no place in the SW universe. It is just another reason what went wrong with the prequels. That scene is out of place in AOTC, along with the cook Dex who knows all these secrets? Everytime I watch that scene I think I am watching the original Back to the Future and waiting to see Marty McFly walk in with Kenobi, and say, "You built a time machine out of midiclorians?"

LOL. The word midichlorians always reminded me of Delorian too and I've said that line before.
George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

Jenny: That made me laugh.

Jenny/Tape: Yep, I don't know what George was thinking when he was editing AOTC. Mabye he was to focused on the Yoda fight or, something. It seems like he was thinking "Okay, I need to get these people to see the new queen while they're in hiding. I need to seperate Anakin and, Obiwan. I also, need to make the librarian say less lines. Oh, yeah and, I can't have her visit her family."

yes, yes i am, I am self righteous. cause me telling you to post constructive is being selfrighteous.

hate all you want but add substance its what i ask of everyone on this site, and i am pretty sure its what JAY wants as well its just that he doesnt have the time to enforce it. that is something that has been degradeing slowly in these forums for the past 15 months or so. you know there is a reason for the grow up thread at the top of the thread list.

I don't hate the prequels, I just hate the fact that they are way below the standards that Lucas has set with the first trilogy (especially after watching the entire "clone wars" cartoons - in my eyes they really demonstrate how difficult it must have been to make the prequels as bad as they are).

So is it the general consensus around here that the Clone Wars animated series is "on the level" of the OT?

First of all I don't view my personal opinion as 'general consensus'. When it comes down to the "Clone Wars" cartoons, I was merely saying that they were much better done from a storytelling point-of-view (not necessarily the story itself), than the prequels themselves. Neither the cartoons nor the prequels can reach the OOT by far, in my personal opinion.

i dont think its on the level of the ot but it was definitely more in the spirit

The cantina music isn't 70s style music, it's kinda wierd alien music, and I'm pretty sure it was composed to sound alien. But the fifties diner is totally gay man - it's so Earthly and non-sci-fi. It just doesn't fit. How can you defend this Shim? Is your name Adam? The reason I hate this scene is because Georgie porgy lucas was thinking 'oh won't it be so cool to have a fifties diner homage to one of my old films, the fans will love it and we can make a dex action figure cos he's so cool and everyone's gonna love dex' but really it was just a bad idea that should have gone no further than being a fleeting thought in Lucas' insane brain.

As for Clone Wars, I agree that the story telling was better, but not neccesarily the story itself. The prequels as a whole, including all the spin off cartoons and whatever, just don't tell a very good story, and they tell this not so good story quite badly. As films themselves, they're not so bad, and compared to a lot of movies, I suppose they're pretty good, but as an exercise in making prequels to existing films, adding to and developing an existing story, they fail, IN MY PERSONAL OPINION.

War does not make one great.

Actually, the cantina music is supposed to sound like 1930s big band music with an alien twist. According to the booklet that came with the soundtrack, Lucas told John Williams to think, "What if some futuristic aliens found a time capsule full of Benny Goodman music. How would they adapt it?"

Concerning the 50's diner, I must say that I love the idea. First, it's a good hommage to American Graffiti (and the 50s of course), but the look in the film is really well done.

I don't understand how someone can say that it has no place in the SW universe. C'MON GUYS, Star Wars is, and has always been, a big hommage to retro-movies and retro-objects. I really don't see why it has no place in the SW universe, in the contrary!

Don't take it as an attack, but I think that many OT-fans, after have seen the entire OT, don't want to see any "new" SW stuff, don't want to see "unfamiliar" SW stuff. But, hey, what could be the point to do always the same things, over and over...

If you can't understand the presence of a 50's diner in the SW universe, I think that you've missed the "heart" itself of Star Wars. Too bad...
