I’m pretty sure TLJ has had about as much hate as the Prequels.
I’d love to know how you can be pretty sure about that.
I’m pretty sure TLJ has had about as much hate as the Prequels. It’s also worth considering they were the only new Star Wars films for a long time.

The difference between the prequels and TLJ is that the internet has changed. There wasn’t Youtube with their suggested video algorithms or Twitter. Facebook existed at the time of Revenge of the Sith but it was localized only to one’s university.
What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

But the prequels came out before social media cemented like minded folks to form these bubbles of craziness we see today. Even in that climate the prequels were being torn up.

With my age group at least, I’m fairly certain it does. Most people I talk to don’t mind the prequels and dislike TLJ.
Not enough people read the EU.

Ever heard of the concept of small sample size or anecdotal evidence?

Isn’t his position literally just that one can’t be sure of one’s position?

Come on man. My position is that you can’t make a statistically relevant data set from talking to your friends. What position do you think I was presenting?
I’m also basing my interpretation of the tiny sample of people my age I know. Wait no, they’re the ones who disliked TFA. Aw, now I’m all mixed up.

Uh, the opposite one (prequels bad, TLJ good)?

While I do hold that personal opinion, I said nothing about how the general population feels. So sorry, you’re wrong, that was not the position I was presenting. “Ever heard of the concept of small sample size or anecdotal evidence?” presents the position that you can’t make a statistically relevant data set from talking to your friends, as I said before.

I have no real data, but I would not be surprised at all if the 15-20 year-olds are largely not offended by the prequels.
I know a lot of people in my circle that don’t like TLJ and I don’t actually know anyone that likes it. My sample-size is only about 10, so I’m not saying that means much of anything, but I think it would be a fair assumption that TLJ at least has had a mixed reception.

That’s stupid though. I don’t know anyone in my real life who dislikes TLJ, but I’m not gonna sit here and pretend that TLJ is universally loved (and based on your posts about interacting with other humans, I think it’s safe to say my sample size is larger). You can’t base a film’s overall reception just off your friends and colleagues.
Hmm …judging by the world wide gross , it seems Solo has made it’s money back and then some . Hardly seems like a failure as some decry …http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=untitledhansolostarwarsanthologyfilm.htm
Ask Disney if they think $368 million worldwide is a success.

smh
It still did better than A Wrinkle In Time, which Disney apparently put on some double bills in certain domestic markets recently just to nudge it past 100 million.
Where were you in '77?

The overall cost of a movie is more than just production. The total cost is estimated to be upwards of $500 million, so they lost >$100 million.
With all the money they’re making this year between Black Panther, Infinity War, and Incredibles 2, I imagine Disney can’t be too upset. 😛

Disney spent $4 billion on Lucasfilm plus the cost of 4 Star Wars movies since then. With toy sales also being sluggish, I doubt they’ve recouped their investment yet and I guarantee the return on Solo has somebody at Disney upset.

Pocket change compared to what they’re forking out for Fox. The Star Wars land at Disneyland hasn’t opened yet. That’s going to be huge. Disney is in this for the long haul.
Someone is probably upset they didn’t cast that Ingruber fellow though. 😉

The first three films grossed
$2,068,223,624
$1,056,057,273
$1,332,539,889
Minus cost of making those, plus home sales, plus related everything else, I bet they’ve recouped their investment.

If those films cost on average about 500,000,000 dollars each, then I doubt that they recouped their investment, especially if you add the money they lost on Solo. I don’t know what their toy sales are like or how much of that money goes straight to Lucasfilm, so I can’t speak to that, but there’s no way that they recouped their investment based on those films, not unless home video sales have made them over a billion dollars.
The Person in Question
It’d be interesting to find out how much Lucasfilm/Disney make for each SW film from worldwide blu ray / dvd / digital download sales, sales to the tv companies in numerous countries around the world for showing the movies, merchandising & licensing deals (lego, funko pops, clothing etc), advert partners (car & battery commercials etc), and their own toys and merch (t-shirts, posters, games, collectibles, books, comics, figures & models, and toys aimed at the kids market).
I suppose we’ll never find out exact figures for sure - though am willing to bet it’s a pretty penny considerable amount to add to the balance sheet.
