I don't believe this is true but I think this coming holiday season will tell us for sure.
More people than you might realize have HD displays. HDTVs were hot sellers last Christmas. Dish/DirecTV and Digital Cable also had increased subscribers in January since so many people got HDTVs for Christmas. The adoption rate of either format has been relatively slow because no one wants to get locked into a dead format. If BluRay wins, I'd hate to be the guy that bought HD-DVD. Likewise if HD-DVD wins, I envision a lot of pissed off BluRay owners.
