So, um... no new DVD's announced this year? — Page 5

In that case it would have been Blu-Ray, which has won the war anyway. The reason I say that it wouldn't really be as effective as, for example, on DVD, is because not a lot of people are even considering upgrading, let alone deciding which format to go with--most people are incapable of upgrading because the vast, vast, vast majority of people don't have HD displays yet (as opposed to DVD, where all you had to do in the 1990's was buy a player and you were set).

I don't believe this is true but I think this coming holiday season will tell us for sure.

More people than you might realize have HD displays. HDTVs were hot sellers last Christmas. Dish/DirecTV and Digital Cable also had increased subscribers in January since so many people got HDTVs for Christmas. The adoption rate of either format has been relatively slow because no one wants to get locked into a dead format. If BluRay wins, I'd hate to be the guy that bought HD-DVD. Likewise if HD-DVD wins, I envision a lot of pissed off BluRay owners.

When I said format war, I meant between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. And Blu-Ray has won it for a while now. HD-DVD will survive until Christmas if only because that represents the last sales stab to minimise losses but after that you'll see it being phased out. The question is, once that has happened and there's only Blu-Ray how much more willing will your average consumer be to give HD a chance now that there is a single, stable format?

In all honesty I'm a little confused, zombie. Are you saying that people will be more willing to adopt the winning format now that the race is over or less willing?

I'm saying that its a question that I'm curious to know the answer to. Obviously it will make people more willing, but I'm curious as to just how much this will impact the adoption of HD into the mainstream.

Hey guys. Just want to tell you I created a petition to bring the entire saga to one set. Feel free to check it out if you want.

Any signatures would be helpful. Thank you.

You mean the unaltered original trilogy in a GOOD transfer?

I'm talkin' Both PT and CT. CT unaltered, but not half-ass. And a big fully CG CT done right this time. No green lightsaber in ANH No matte lines ,and Darth Vaders pussy pink saber is blood red.
Loads of extras including ALL deleted scenes and crap.

I feel so depressed when I see this topic. In fact, what's worse is that the only thing I had to look forward to was that stupid Robot Chicken special. As if that somehow seems to allay the negligence of Lucasfilm to release a decent set with decent extras. I couldn't care less about a damn 22 minute show that's partly made out of past clips. I expected better.

That's just my opinion, anyway.

I'm curious: What's the reason for including the PT in such a petition? The transfers of that are pretty decent, and they come with some good bonus materials. It's the OT that has suffered.

Is it simply to make it more appealing to the PT's biggest fans, George Lucas and Rick McCallum?

Well technically none of the PT movies are on dvd in their theatrical cuts either. The changes made to TPM are plain as day and I remember reading that there were at least 80 changes made to AOTC. ROTS is practically the same though. This is why I think the best case scenario would be twelve discs, two for each movie. One disc would be the original theatrical version and the other would be the latest revision, neither of which we've gotten on dvd. What I actually dream of in the long run is one BD-100 (dual sided, dual layer) disc for each film.

Yea, I know, why include the PT at all. I guess it's only from a preservationist standpoint that it would matter since as I said above we don't have any of the theatrical cuts on dvd.

By the way DGC, I think you could've bothered to actually state in the petition that we want the O-OT remastered in the box set. If it's not too late to change it you might want to do so.

^^ I'm sorry I can't edit it once I have signatures. I too realized it was a little vague once a friend had looked at it.

I was at the lego store the other day. I worked there the past couple of summers and I was stopping by to tell them I was still available. Anyway, I noticed the 30th anniversary sets are out now, and I thought back to that german lego memo. What do you people think about that? Do you think it was actually legit and LFL just decided to change their plans after the fact?

Theres no reason for a PT petition. They'll be out in better editions sooner or later, and they are already available in HD. The OOT on the other hand, needs a good backing of support.

I love your uncompromising view of the GOUT! For me, the OUT will never be the same, because what once was canon is no longer canon; the waters have been muddied, and when I talk about Star Wars with others, we may not be talking about the SAME Star Wars.

At least we have this forum and Lucasfilm's half-hearted release of the GOUT as bonus material.
