It takes time and careful calculations to figure how best to screw over the fan base.
LOL
Here's my take on it all in another thread:
On a related note, I noticed that the prices on HD-DVD players have really dropped. With The Matrix trilogy now on the format, I'm sure LFL won't be too far behind. Since Fox is with Blu-ray (correct?) imagine how big of a push that format would get if the SW movies were released on it! Knowing Lucas, he's not going to let this opportunity slide...

A legend was born...
Where the F*#$ are our 30th anniversary DVDs everyone was talking about?
The least Lucas could have done is mention something about the set. Maybe they're hiding something from use?
Only time will tell.

from 2004, 2005, and 2006 thats 3 times the 2004 special editions have been released and one time only for the letterbox bonus oot.
Lucasfilm is still cautious about blu ray because they are worried about the copy protection being hacked. I think they much prefer at this point cinemax and HBO, and at some point pay per view on demand movies of the HD versions.
it is much more expensive to master and produce blu ray discs instead of dvd, and not everyone has hi def tv sets yet, it is still a niche market for early adopters of technology.
Yet Lucasfilm always saying it stays on the cutting edge on technology and entertainment makes me think Blu Ray is somewhere up there sleeves, and you know fox is breathing down his neck for them to be released, as well as sony the makers of the blu ray format. Because if star wars is released on blu ray as an exclusive title say bye bye to HD-DVD.

I was astonished after watching this documentary on how far Lucas will go to make the story he wants out there now. Every person who commented in special took the saga to mythological terms, and it was all about Anakins story and Lukes story which eventually leads to Anakins redemption. They even went as far to compare Jar Jar to mythological Greek figures who always played the 'fool.'
That night I realized that this is SW now, and we can either do 2 things, jump on the train, or walk away OOT fans, cause Lucas is not going to budge anymore to appease any older fans who like that Han shot first. Just think about this weekend, they had a 6 movie marathon to commerorate the 30th Anniversary of SW, and when they showed the Original SW, they didn't even show the 30 year old version!!!!!!
The OT never needed to be sold to the consumer AFTER the movies came out the way Lucas is doing now with the PT/Saga story. I was never bombarded with all these mythological tieins to make the movies more important then they really are. The OT had depth, probably more then most movies in its genre, but they were just damn fun movies to watch with a cool story, great characters, awesome special effects, and great drama to keep you interested. Lucas forgot that SW used to be fun, and now it is all serious in the way he wants the story to be seen, yet when you have characters like Jar Jar Binks, you wonder if Lucas regrets catering to kids and should have just have gone after an older demographic.
The Saga boxset will come out someday on DVD or BlueRay, but I have kinda given up on the whole 'will the OOT be remastered' fantasy, cause I think our dream died with the GOUT, and even that was the last way Lucas can stilll get our money and thumb his nose at us at the same time. As I have said in a couple of my other posts, I have put my hands up and accepted that this is SW for the future, and I have just walked away, and hopefully the XO project happens, and can satisfy enough fans that we can enjoy these damn movies once again.

I believe in the intent of originaltrilogy.com and I enjoy the preservation that's going on here. I think it's great for the community. But your constant whinning is going to get you absolutely no where. It's not constructive, and certainly doesn't reflect well on the goals we've set to achieve.

TFN has plenty of positive things to say about Lucas, if you're looking for some.
MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.
MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.
JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Coming to these forums is like listening to a broken record over and over again. It's the same whining over and over about how Lucas won't give you this and Lucas won't give you that. I mean, doesn't there come a point where you just accept his decisions and live with what you have? Or will you respectfully continue the fight that was begun here so long ago? The key word is respect, which I believe some of you have lost sight of.

With all due respect Sunday, I don't think you understand what the point of this website is. The point is to get the OOT on DVD in the quality that every DVD that is out on the market these days. DVD has been on the market for 10 years now, and we have laserdisk quality for the OOT versions of movies, how else should we feel? Thanks George for giving us Laserdisk quality DVD's that were great quality in 1993!!!!!!
As for respect, do you really think Lucas reads these forums? And if he does, then he has too much time on his hands. There is no respect by our side, cause there is no respect from Lucas towards these versions. Do you remember these quotes:
"I am sorry you fell in love with a half completed film."
"The Special Editions are the ones that exist now, and I don't recognize the originals anymore, and I am not going to take the time and money and remaster them, so if you want them, their on VHS."
"OK, we are putting out the unaltered DVD's in September, so we will see if this is what people want, it will all come out in the end."
Tell me one creator who talks like that to his fans? Name one please? Can you imagine Quentin Tarantino chastising his fanbase cause Jackie Brown tanked at the boxoffice, or Ron Howard pissing all over his fans cause Far and Away was utterly hated by the fans in 1992? No, both films have gotten great DVD treatment, and the directors don't thumb their nose at their fanbase cause the movies underperformed.
So by your rationale Sunday, we should keep waiting and waiting for the next great bootleg on the market, cause that is the reason I came to this site, buy the OOT illegally!!!!

If anyone watched the History Channel Documentary on the SW saga Monday Night, (Which was sponsored by Lucasfilm), this was a clear attempt to get everyone in line to look at the movies 1-6, not OOT, not SW 77, the days of 2 trilogies are over, Lucas wants EVERY SW fan to see it his way, and I heavily doubt we will see the OOT ever again.
Actually, I felt amazed that it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. Hell, the first half hour or so was just about Luke, and just about the original Star Wars. I expected the first half of the entire documentary to be about Anakin, the true tragic hero of Star Wars. Because, you know, he comes first in the true order of things. And after the original movie abruptly shifted to the next one, it still kept a pretty trilogy-oriented feel until then they shifted over to Anakin. But if you have to cover all six movies, at least they're putting the original trilogy before the prequel trilogy, like it should be.
And, yeah, I snickered and pointed out to my girlfriend all the BS about the mythological connections. But at the same time it was kinda cool, because I think about it as a really neat coincidence that it encompassed so many archetypes, even if the word on the street is that Lucas planned it all, which we all know is hilariously untrue.
As for the main topic, I've been hoping against a Saga 30th anniversary boxset for the past year, and it seems like my wish came true. I've bought these movies enough times, and if he ever does release a good version of the original trilogy to replace my GOUT (which is holding up well enough for me right now), I don't want to have to buy another set of the prequels in some bloated boxset to get it. For once, they made a good marketing move. You can still find all three DVD versions in every single store you go to.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Right, I think sometimes some of us lose sight of that. That's why I originally came to this site anyway- to sign the petition to get the OOT released on DVD. Of course, I was hoping that the movies would at the very least be anamorphic, if not given the whole remastered/restored treatment.
It's good to remember exactly why this site was created:

I'm interested in seeing this new documentary history channel thing everyone is talking about. It might be a bunch of bs but I'm curious.
If anyone else missed it like me and can't find it on the 'net PM me.
I can't say I care too much about the 30th anniversary box set or lack there of. In my mind it was never going to include a restored OOT anyway.
And I wouldn't hold out hope for it on blu-ray any time soon, no matter who is pressuring Lucasfilm. We all know they go at their own pace. It took a long time just to get the OT on dvd and even then they were only planning to get it out on the market after ROTS, but didn't they bring it forward to combat piracy/bootlegs? What a long (unfulfilling) wait that was.

By the way, I do not own the GOUT. I refused to purchase another copy of the Prequels in order to get them. As do you, I want the unaltered OT movies as they were...and cleaned up and widescreen...and all of that. I don't want the SE's. I already own them.
That said, I own all 3 prequels...and I 99.9% of the time watch the SE DVDs as they are an improvement over the VHS versions. I do not own the laserdiscs, but I do own the last retail box set of the VHS OOT. I've not watched them in the last 5 or 6 years simply because I enjoy the quality of the DVDs more and I want to keep the VHS somewhat safe from use in case I do want to go back and watch them at some point.
So why do I want the OOT on DVD? Maybe one day I'll want to go back and watch them. And simply, I agree with many of you in that the original movies need to be preserved for the generations to come.
