Well, if they've sent out copies to review then they most likely will appear on the web in no time....and I will get them there because I don't have $90ish dollars to shell out on half-baked LD transfers. Granted I imagine they will look better than the ones I have now, but I still don't wanna line GL's pockets with ha;f a paycheck in my situation.

It looks better than most of the times I saw Star Wars in theaters.
Really? I mean, really? You didn't notice the lack of stars on the left side of the SD? Or how about the salt and pepper noise that is most apparant on the planet? I guess some of us look deeper at the details than others...
Also if all these screens are shitty 72 dpi crappy captures of the DVD then they all equal quality to each other. I agree that the pic abouve is one of the best presented but it goes to show that the crappy Kantina sceen is as bad as it looks as well....

Yes, so if you look at how shitty the menus are represented here and imagine how good they will look on the actual release, you can take that improvement factor and apply it to the other screenshots and get a pretty good idea of what the movies will look like: Not fabulous, but not terrible either.
The menus do look a little soft because they were scaled from anamorphic 16:9 (720 x 576) to a real 16:9 aspect ratio (720 x 405). Well, at least the menus are anamorphic
If these are grabs from a DVD, which their precise resolution suggests, then JPEG compression should be the only quality factor to take into consideration (unless they've been analogue captured, which I doubt), but the DVD menus do look a little bit on the poor side if that's true. There's also a lot more vignetting (darkening at the edges, like the ESB menu) than there should be in the shot of the Star Destroyer over Tatooine when you compare it to various LD preservation screenshots. I have my suspicions that the images have been matted with black after resizing, if they came from a DVD capture, which seems an odd thing to do.
I also don't think the vertical resize can be entirely to blame for the menu's fuzziness.
The DVD menus do stick almost exactly to the 10% text safe area standards, just like the 2004 DVDs, if that means anything.

What I would like to see is an objective comparison between the official version, the finished X0 project and an improved Moth3r transfer. Just think what would happen if a reputable home entertainment magazine or website was to report that the fan-created bootlegs are higher quality than the official DVD release. That's the sort of publicity our cause needs.
(Saying that, the official DVDs do seem to have an absence of dot-crawl that all laserdisc transfers suffer from to some degree.)
Anybody able to answer the interlaced vs progressive question yet? What about telecining? It will affect the ease of an anamorphic blow-up of the film in AVISynth.
My understanding only goes so far, so I'm hoping you die-hards would know by now.
I joined this stie because I want the originals as they were made. I assumed that was what everyone else here wanted as well. Now that we are getting them on DVD all I am hearing is "not good enough". To all of you that are bitching please please please shut the fuck up.

2006 = anamorphic transfer at least, and not really a lot to ask for...
There is no need for me to begin to touch your "shut the fuck up" comment, because that showed me the type of person you are already...
Oh well, these look good enough for me. Not as bad as I'd been hearing about.
I'll buy them I think, and begin work on my own somewhat De-SE DVD fan edit, assuming I can find a decent way to convert the DVDs to anamorphic without loosing too much quality.
These shots don't look half bad (if they're real). Please don't misunderstand me- I am outraged that my favorite films of all time are being treated like an afterthought, but since I found out about this release- I resigned myself to the idea that GL is a jerk. I was OK with my laserdiscs, so if these DVDs are only a smidge better than the LDs, I will just have to be satisfied with them......for now. But the fight still goes on........
I realize we're grasping at whatever straws we can get our eyes on for the next 18 days .... but I'll be much less cynical about quality comments once commentators have watched the actual DVDs.
Of course, it will be too late for me by then ... I will have made my purchase already. But while I'm glad for a topic to read and post about, these screen shots prove nothing ... and we'll still have to wait and see.
