So how good is the Thrawn trilogy?

After being disappointing in TFA (I know I’m in the minority and I have no desire to ruin it for other people who loved it, but ya I didn’t 😦), I’m really kind of feeling the urge to check this series out, but only if it’s genuinely well written. Is it?

It is.

It has its cons for sure, but the general feel for me is a little more SW than TFA. On the other hand, TFA is a little more fun and without politics.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

I think you’ll find that a huge portion of the fan base credits the Thrawn series with extending the franchise beyond Return Of The Jedi. It had been long dormant until that novel.

For me, Zahn’s work is second only to the NPR version of Star Wars among my personal canon. After that, I’d definitely add the Daley trilogy of Han Solo novels. We have a thread dedicated to EU, with tons of reviews. I’ve put several myself, but I seem to remember they have mild spoilers. I’ll find some and check before I put in the link.

Been a long time since I’ve read it, but I remember quite enjoying it. My dad also enjoyed it, but he’s more of a ‘casual’ star wars fan, but likes to read, so at least (if my memory is correct) that means it’s well written.

I read it recently and found it a bit disappointing. I think I had higher expectations since everyone seems to praise the books to heaven and back so it’s a bit of my own fault.

In any case I like the story he thought up for a post ROTJ world.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I love the Thrawn Trilogy.

You have to remember that it came out ages ago, when there wasn’t really anything star wars related going on. Long before the prequels, and long long before Disney-wars. It was water in the desert for fans, and Zahn knocked it out of the park.

I’m not sure how a new reader would find it today.

War does not make one great.

It’s been a few years since I read the books, so they’re not fresh in my mind, but I really, really enjoyed them; the trilogy reinvigorated my interest in the franchise after ROTS and the Legacy era had all but killed it for me. There were a few “fanficky” elements I disliked – Zahn’s explanation for Luke’s vision in the cave, his explanation of how Vader lost his hand, how he described the ysalamiri’s ability to block the Force – but they weren’t enough to ruin the story for me.

Where’s hairy_hen, though? He can sing the trilogy’s praises better than anyone on this forum.

Here’s the start of some of my reviews. The thread can get a little unwieldy since it’s years in the making. There are almost certainly spoilers scattered throughout.

The Thrawn series, the Mara Jade stories, and the Hand Of Judgement stories would make excellent films (all Zahn).

If only Lucas had handed the reins of the franchise over to others back in the '90s, when Hamill, Fisher, and Ford were still young enough to play the characters as they were written in those books. But noooooooo, we had to get over a decade of godawful acting, CG overload, and revisionism instead.
