So I was around newegg...

So I was thinking about getting a new computer and--being a moron--I need all the help I can get. I'll mostly be using it for video editing, video viewing (preservation projects!!!), audio whatever, a little graphics I guess--but nothing professional (or else I'd get that bigass expensive AMD processor for like 1.5 grand) I'm actually not too much interested in games, but I do want to keep my options open.

Here's what I've put together so far:

---------------------------------------------
Case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811133154 - 150 (what's it mean by "power supply - no" under specs? I know it doesn't mean included, cause that's the one above it)

Harddrive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144160 - 150

Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813186055 - 200

Videocard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814195003 - 650

Soundcard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829102191 - 400

Power Supply - (I'm completely lost here)

Processor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103573 - 1400

Cooling - (need something better than what's on newegg) - straight from "kollance" website

Drive - I'm just not gonna go there yet, I'm not sure if I should get two for burning, or just get one really good one and have image files on the comp, dual layer of course, litescribe for a certain "90s retro" dvd look sometimes...God I don't know...

------------------------------------------
Total (excluding powersupply and cooling and drives)
3000

In terms of cash, I think the conditions I'd even attempt to do this under are ideally around 4000 dollars. I definitely need to do a new computer cause all I have is a Dell, so not a lot of room for updates.

Everything should be compatible with everything from what I've checked, but if you want to double check for me that'd be great. I'm also not sure if any one part is not up to speed with another part, thereby making the faster part a sort of waste of money. But maybe not, I don't know. I'm sure I'll be upgrading for a few years, but with what I got here I probably won't be upgrading for awhile. If I'm missing any computer part just let me know. Remember I'm an idiot.

Anyway I'm up for critique in any way I'm being stupid - technically, economically, anything--I just wanna never have to upgrade for a few years.

Oh, and if you're not familiar with newegg, you should get aquainted, or at let me know why newegg is actually stupid and I just don't realize there's an even better website out there. Thanks.

For 4000 grand you could get a Quad G5 ($3,300), a copy of Final Cut Express HD ($300), and a Pro Tools M-Box ($400).

You would be set for a long time with that sucker. And if you needed to make it better for around 700 bux you can pick up around 8 GB of ram for it.

In the future you would pick up a copy of After Effects and a copy of DVD Studio Pro and you would be a one man movie making machine. Plus the Graphics card on that mac would be decent for quite some time. Making it plenty good for gaming in the future.

yeah it is. I ment to write "4 Grand" but I noticed that after I posted it and was just too damn lazy to edit it.

And yet I wasn't too lazy to write back and tell you why I wrote 4000 Grand. Go figure.

Damn you Mac bastards!

I hear they don't really upgrade worth a Dewback and Imperial walker in the background of A New Hope (Oh God...wth was I thinking with that one)--anyway will that mac be the greatest computer ever built until years from now when I have to upgrade--and will I be able to upgrade?

That mac will run for about 20 years. If you need to upgrade anything on that it will be the graphics card or the memory.

The graphics card, as you know, needs to be updated about every two weeks.

And the memory can go up to 16 GB max.

So with the option of 16GB of ram and four 2.5GB processors you should be set for at least 10 years before you need a new computer.

Yep. That's the thing about Macs.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Man, that tempts even me. I made a fantasy order on the Apple Website and, yeah, I was running up almost $20,000 canadian. Whew! But it would have been awesome. I was then torn between that and the Voodoo Omen Elemental, a gold plated PC

The Voodoo Omen Elemental is only $8,000. You could spring for that and hope the cost of gold skyrockets in the future.

Allright, you guys win--I just need to know a few things--as I'm sort of Mac-illiterate (sans my experience with the bigass set of mac minis my school recently bought for the library)

I can just plug my old dell monitor, pc speakers, and keyboard/mouse straight into a mac, can't i? or is there some compatibility thing going on? (you can laugh if you want--whichever the obvious answer might be--I'm not really knowledgable when it comes to these sorts of things)

In your experience, how much space is needed to comfortably fit your project files for preservation/fan edits on your hard drive?--I hear from everybody here it's a buttload of a load on your hard drive, but that could mean a lot of things. 12-15 gbs of video?...100 to 200 gbs of video...? (uncompressed video is a bitch!)

Everything will plug right into the mac just fine.

Video files add up in a hurry. That all depends on the length of the file you will be using. I use the following to figure it out.

[Video Bitrate (# bits/sec) + Audio Bitrate (# bits/sec)] X # Seconds = Total Files Size (# bits)

Just put in your info and do the math and you will have a good idea of how much space you need. A 500 GB HD is a good idea to start. You can get buy fine with 250 but the extra space is very nice. I'm constantly fighting with space on my HD. I can't remember the last time it wasn't full.

I can't believe you're going to buy a 4 million dollar computer.
