Verified Purchase
To clarify some possibly confusing information -
The transfers are upscaled, yes.
They are from old video transfers, with dirt and other defects.
Two of the films, Creature and Incident at Raven’s Gate, are widescreen (appearing to be about 2.35:1) while Slipstream - arguably the most wanted in widescreen - is pan & scan 4:3, 1.33: 1 (only the opening titles are presented “letterboxed”).

Sitting here watching the Japanese Laserdisc I recently purchased from a Japanese seller on eBay (cheaply and it was brand new - more available too).
It’s been some time since I watched my Dvd, but it doesn’t seem to be much of an improvement. Still good to have though.

Ive read through this entire thread and was wondering what became of the 35mm film trailer? All the images of it have since gone. Would love to see even just a few images of it.

I got a DVD transfer of the Japanese Laserdisc some years back. I agree with you. It’s a slightly better image than the public domain DVDs out there. The color seems to be better and of course, it’s widescreen. But then there’s those pesky burned-in subtitles. Oh well. It IS good to have, though.

The subtitles are a bit distracting. Might transfer the LD to Dvd then do an edit on the PC, cropping it to 2.35:1.

And I just bought myself a 35mm trailer and some lobby cards. I really do like this film Lol.

Hi,

I thought I would update everybody I have started working on an edit using both the laserdisc and dvd version. It’s in the very early stages and I am playing around with some colour correction.

Here are a few screengrabs of the before and afters.

Just a minor question.

With me merging the widescreen Japanese laserdisc and English dvd. Will there be any legal issues with me placing it on youtube?

Although there is a copyright notice in the credits, I’m pretty sure that is expired since I’ve seen Slipstream on YouTube multiple times. You should be fine. 😃

That’s good to read.

Is the Laserdisc worth it for ones own private collection if they can get it for 35 dollars? The Japanese release i mean.

I have the VHS somewhere. But i seem to have misplaced it.

I mean if you want it just for your collection sure but if it’s for the widescreen version I was able to get a download link from a YouTube user neamed “liscensetodrive” who made a test video of it much earlier. All credit goes to that dude.

Hi Chaotic Catastrophes,

Sorry for late reply. But I am still working on it and fitting it in with spare time.

Also purchased a laserdisc version and sending it off to be captured, just to see if I can get another version to work with 😃

Hi Everyone,

Sadly I have had to put this on hold, since I have just had a copyright strike from youtube about a previous upscaled 16:9 version and it has been taken down. So I am guessing it would be the same for a new proper scale 16:9 version!

From my understanding this was free from copyright rules/laws but apparently not!

Sorry everyone 😦

I’ve literally seen the whole movie on YT! Darn YouTube always throwin’ strikes out left and right. I’d recommend trying Dailymotion if you attempt to upload again.

Sadly I have just looked up the particular film distribution company who put forward the copyright complaint/issue to youtube and going by the web they still have distribution rights to it.

I am a little bit miffed since I had put the time, effort and a little bit of funding into edited some of the scenes to make them more clean and fluent on the audio and motion front.

It’s just one of those things I suppose 😦

Note from wikipedia…

The film is mistakenly believed to be in the public domain, when in reality it has a proper copyright notice in the end credits.

Do they have a name? There are plenty of shady characters laying claim to films that are otherwise orphaned. Ask any MST3K fan.

I’m pretty sure that copyright expired a while back because if it hadn’t I don’t think that so many different versions would exist out in the wild and I bet you we’d also have an actual good copy of the widescreen version
