So I guess we are out of comic books to reboot.

I can't wait for Mouse trap the movie, that was always my favorite when I was a young kid.

Ah man, movies based on board games suck. Remember Clue? Oh wait, that movie was awesome. But still, movies based on stuff like toys suck. Remember The Lego Movie? Oh wait, that was awesome.

Don't judge a movie by the box it was born out of.

Hmm, remember Battleship? Or movies based on video games, like In the name of the King, Alone in the Dark or Far Cry? The vast majoroty of adaptions of games is pretty lame.

Clue had the unique feature of different endings, while the Lego Movie had a distinct look. These movies offer more than just a story set in the same universe as the game.

I just can't see how it is necessary to base a series on Settlers of Catan while it could as well stand for itself. The main features of the game are building settlements and trading resources. This would work just as well in a unique setting.

The non-linear course of games in general makes it very hard to adapt them into movies and just using the same universe is very unimaginative.

The fact that it was funny was much more important than the multiple ending gimmick.

I was fairly entertained by Battleship. It gave me a moment to turn my brain off and look at the pretty colors.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Conquests of the Longbow would make a better Robin Hood movie than any of the ones we've had for the last 25 years.

Except Men in Tights. Mel Brooks is awesome.

I'm in the middle of watching Battleship on TV right now (or more precisely, Bataille Navire).

Yeah, but they could have called their funny mystery film anything if it didn't have this gimmick. This feature justifies the strong connection to the board game and I don't see anything in these other movies that justifies the connection to the corresponding games

I'm not even saying the Settlers movie and show will suck, I'm just saying that it's not necessary to copy the world of the board game.

I have to wonder if the filmmakers  were inspired by early interactive Laserdiscs like this...

Lego Movie was pretty darn funny too.  "Distinct look" is pretty low on the list of its merits.

As I said before, I didn't say the succes was based on the features I mentioned, I said these features justified the strong connection to the games. The movies would have been great even without these gimmicks and Settlers may be great, too. But in the last case I don't see why they had to strictly stick to the board game, while I see why they called it the Lego movie or Clue.

If they announced a movie inspired by Settlers, it wouldn't be a big deal, but making a movie based on the game seems unimaginative as I don't think it has that much to offer.

So, if someone wants to convince me why using the Settlers name was necessary, you should list the merits of the game and what it has to offer apart from "trading and settling".

Name recognition. They can attach any medieval script to the title and call it "Settlers of Catan" and people will watch it. SEE ALSO: "I, Robot".

Also, there's a novel already, there might be an existing universe there.

I have to say I can't believe the number of snobby people I know who hated Man of Steel for it's product placement who praise The Lego Movies as brilliant and proof that more toys should be turned into movies.

If you like the Lego movie that is fine, but you lose the right to ever complain about product placement in a movie or say that makes it a bad movie because the Lego movie is Product Placement Giant Toy Ad:The Movie.

The whole movie is an ad, even the name is an ad.  If there were not toys to sell it would not exist.  It's only purpose is to sell toys, not tell a story.

I really hope this trend dies soon and we can start seeing some films about real people living in the real world start to get made once again.

The Christopher Reeve films were chock full of real world products. Supergirl as well.

And toy based films are hardly anything new...

Yes, that is exactly my point.  It's silly to call a modern film like Man of Steel out for product placement when the first film in the series had a thirty second shot of a cereal box in it.

As for the Lego movie I don't see how it is any better or worse then the movies you mentioned.  i don't think it is trash but it blows my mind that people who complain about product placement in movies see it as one of the greatest film ever made.  To me it is nothing more then a silly toy movie, nothing more and nothing less.

I really hope we don't see the flood gates open and get a movie based on Uno or something like that soon.  I don't think I could make it through two and a half hours of Uno.

As for the question asked by the Care Bears movie poster, when the world stops caring The Big Bang Theory goes on for eight seasons with no end in sight.  Now that is hell on earth right there.  We need the Care Bears to return and put an end to this nonsense.

IIRC, there was a new CB series a couple years ago. Guess it didn't catch fire the way MLP has.

Are you an idiot? Or did you just not see The Lego Movie?
