Hi, just kicking around some ideas. I watched Silent Hill for the 2nd and 3rd times over the weekend and thought that it was a good film, but there could be some interesting edits to come out of it.

I thought maybe it would be cool if maybe once Rose enters Silent Hill, we stay with her character the whole time, never showing Sean Bean at any point after the beginning. Even though he had some good exposition, it wasn’t necessarily really important to the scariness or the atmosphere of the film, in fact i think his scenes actually detract from it. Also, the ending could be changed, and the film can end right after Rose escapes the town, giving the film a simple happy ending as opposed to the “what the hell??” ending the film has now.

Again, this is just an idea, but i think a cool, creepy hour and a half horror movie could come from this slightly messy 2 hr. 20 min. movie. Any thoughts?

I agree with all your ideas. The whole film was kind of a mess.

ive completed this, and itll be up on demonoid within the next day or so. i know ive got a bunch of projects in the works, but ive run into really infuriating technical problems on all of them, this was the only one i could finish without a problem.

matrix reloaded extended will be done once i can actually get the etm scenes to convert to anamorphic. virtualdub freezes up on me whenever i try to do it. looks like ill have to do each scene individually.

i dunno what the hell is happening the once upon a time in mexico. if i use sony vegas to create it it goes ridiculously out of sync. ill keep working on it.

for now, enjoy this edit. I like it, it's simple changes that i think help the film with pacing and atmosphere. Everything Sean Bean does is not particularly important to Rose's story in Silent Hill, and i like that now, once she enters silent hill, you're stuck there with her. I also removed the confusing ending (which i dont particularly dislike, it just doesnt necessarily work with this edit). The film now ends with Rose and her duaghter leaving the town in their car, with a sinister look at the evil child. You'll see. Anyway, I like it.

Also, i decided to include all the scenes i cut on the dvd, including the original ending, in short film format. This is actually pretty cool.

I bought a used dvd, so I could have this. Naturally, I watched the edit first.

IMO, your edit is best way to see the movie, for the first time. It's a lot more intense and disorienting, to see her story, straight through, without explanatory interruptions from the real world.

Nitpick: there were a couple of jumps in the music. I think the music was similar enough that it might've blended successfully, with several seconds of audio crossfade. I don't recall if the footage could've been trimmed enough to to allow long crossfades, though.


I posted this to the newsgroups - a.b.dvd, a.b.dvd5, and the nzb is crossposted to a.b.nzb.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

 

Download  shows from Cable DVR (Updated! Yes, it needs a rewrite, but it's worth slogging through, anyway).

I have to say, I actually rather liked Silent Hill. The atmosphere was awesome, and I like dark, brooding films. Guess it's just me.
