Shadows of the Empire - a TV show idea?

This will probably take some heat, but I personally would like to see Lucas do the 3D CGI television show he is planning on doing based on this book/game. Make it a 20 to 40 part show that can be cut together as one large movie. It would help develop the characters of the bounty hunters, some other background characters in the OT and would be able to feature special appearences by Luke, Leia, Lando, Chewy, Vader, Stormtroopers, Boba Fett, Jabba, etc. With the beauty of the CGI is Lucas can flex the muscle of Lucasfilm and ILM and show off just how ‘realistic’ they can get the show.

I always thought the story told by the N64 game was about the only EU I could stand, and still do. I’d hate to see a good story, good score and good idea go to waste. Might as well do something for OT fans, instead of pilling it on for the PT fans. I’m sure Hammill would be more than willing to do the voice for not only the Luke character, but I’d venture a bet he’d do the voice acting for Render and other characters.

Ah well, it’s just a thought. We’ve really not ever gotten anything aimed at what made Lucas famous, just his more recent works.

Actually, that doesn't sound like a bad idea. I've always loved the Shadows of the Empire N64 game (which came out when I was probably 8 or 9 years old) and thought it would be cool to see a film version of this. I didn't care for the book all that much, but that's just because Steve Perry isn't all that great of a writer, so the story itself can be fixed. It'd sure as hell be better than the pre- "Star Wars" show he's planning now.

I've never played the game, I wonder how closely it follows to the book.

If it was done right (that must be empahasized), I would not be opposed to seeing some of the books translated into a CGI TV show.

That sounds pretty good! I'd love to watch SOTE in CGI TV show. Personaly, I've found the book really good, and it has gave birth to famous and good characters as Dash Rendar and Xizor. And the most interesting point of it, is that the story takes place between ESB and ROJ, which sounds very exciting to me!
The only matter about it, that's we would not be able to see Han again...

Hardcore Legend, this though is only yours or have you heard rumors about it?

For a good SW TV series, I think that the whole Rogue Squadron novel series could be a very good material too! It has great moments such as the attack on Coruscant, when the Rebel Alliance takes back the capital city.

No rumors, just thinking out loud. I just thought it would be a way to not only keep Star Wars alive, but appease some of the OT fans. We know that Mark and Carrie both are more than willing to be a part of the Star Wars family again. Harrison is not. With his character not really being in this story other than frozen, it works out.

I absolutely would love a TV version of the SOTE project! When they did the project in 96', using a book, comics, soundtrack, game, toys, etc, it purposefully gave the project thre feel of an actual film release. It's an awesome idea. It was cool how they even created a trailer for this originally, mimicing the ways a film is promoted.

It doesn't really follow the book. The game sort of weaves in and out of the book. It follows Dash completely rather than the adventures of Luke and company, so it only really matches up when those two parties meet. It begins during the Battle of Hoth rather than the hologram conversation between Vader and Palpatine.

I haven't played the game in a while. At 11 or 12 years old, I was never able to beat it myself. I always got help from an older neighbor. But they had Dash do some pretty unbelievable things, like fighting an AT-ST and even the Slave I! And I'm not talking Dash in some kind of vehicle. I mean Dash the human being on his own taking on Boba Fett's ship. Crazy...

Its a video game. So of course your going to be fighting some pretty unbelieveable stuff. Instead of the video game, however, I'd perfer the book. Another potential 3D CGI show would be one based on the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Still the best Star Wars EU, IMHO.

I too would love to see them do the Thrawn set of books. I remember walking into a bookstore and seeing the 1st Zahn hardcover on the shelf. I was so excited to read a new SW book. Too bad they decided to flood the market with a gazillion other books! I was picking them all up as they came out, but after a while I had to quit. There were just too many!
The same goes for the toys. I was buying every figure/ship/etc as they were coming out, but after a while I had to quit. It ceased being fun! It was just too much trouble, not to mention too expensive. I'm officially done collecting all things SW. I'm just focusing on getting the best possible dvd of the Original Trilogy and then I'm out. Of course I'll watch the tv shows, and I'll see any other movies (if there are others), but the collecting part of this hobby is over for me. I've been slowly getting rid of all of my collectables (I still have a lot to get rid of). It was fun while it lasted, but the money-hungry corporation that is Lucasfilm took away my enjoyment of the hobby.

This was one of the most fun Star Wars boks produced. And The Clone Wars era has been done to death! Why do they insist on doing MORE Clone Wars?!? With the ungodly amount of books, comics, games, etc that they have released from that era, don't you think they should put that era to rest? I mean, they have proved they can do cool OT-era animation with the Boba Fett segment from the holiday special. A SOTE animated mini-series I guarantee you would be a HUGE hit amnong not just fans, but the general public, since it would bring back the original characters in a very OT-style fun story. I have read a lot of posts from fans also on the OS and on TF.N who would like to se this done. I hope Lucasfilm takes a hint, as they have said that they read the internet to se what fans want.

And Jim Ward would be proud, as it would give Lucasfilm another chance to bring out the novel, comics, sountrack, and video game again.

A few portugese Star Wars fans filmed the entire story of Shadows of the Empire using action figures. While this often doesn't amount to much, these guys created something pretty great. It is in Portugese of course, but there are english subtitles (done by the creators, so you have to forgive the improper translation at times).

This project took them six years to finish and they still have plans on tweaking it and possibly coming out with an english version eventually. It is the first time someone has tried taking this story on and has been able to show something for it.

The direct download link is below. Let me warn you that the download is 420 MB, so if you are on dial-up then you might want to give this a pass for now or get a download manager like Getright.

You can read more about it including some of what went into it and fan reviews here in the release thread:

Fond memories of playing a level on a train speeding through a scrapyard planet, getting to the end of the train and crashing into a junkyard scrapland and having a fight with a ever so hard to beat IG88, and a scrap with Boba Fett and then his ship Slave1 in a large reactor core. Gave up when i had to fight Xisor......

That is my favorite SW game! I too remember that mission! It was the mission to the Gall spaceport where you played as Dash Rebndar.

Of course, you played as Dash Rendar for the entire game...

Actually, there was another SOTE fan film using action figures, but it wasn't Portugese.

I downloaded it probably about 8 years ago or so. I'll see if I can find it on a CD somewhere and get some webspace to show it. Seemed to have a lot of potential, but can't seem to find the website anymore. Probably defunct.

I actually have quite a few action figure based Star Wars parodies on that CD as well (if I can find it). Some are real funny (Disco Lando), but I'm getting off track.

If you can find it and host it I would like to see it.

Thanks!

Well, its 6 episodes. About 1/4 of the film. Jeff Hendricks and Bob Branch take all the credit. Unfortunately, it no longer exists on the net anymore.

Its 100 MB large. Does anyone have space for it? I don't have the space

To me, it felt most like the OT films than any other SW novels. I liked the way it was written. It was very straighforward about things; it told you exactly what was going on and managed to tie ESB and ROTJ together very well.

There's 6 total, but that's all I can put up for now.
