Aw c'mon... not *everyone* knows about all that- if they did, region-free players would be the only ones out there and the only DVDs you could buy would be widescreen.

Chaltab, in a nutshell the 'Region' system was put in place to avoid piracy, at least in theory. Laserdiscs were not region encoded back in the day, nor were videotapes. The idea with DVDs was that if a film was out on DVD in, say, the USA already but just hitting theaters in Asia, then pirates and even consumers would just sell/buy the discs and the movie studios would lose money.

And you don't even have to buy a DVD player marked as 'Region-Free'. I bought a DVD player at Target for $40 that, by enter a code with the remote (exactly like a video game cheat code), 'unlocks' the player making it Region-Free AND opening it up to NTSC/PAL conversion. Speaking of...

Region codes on DVDs are an entirely different thing than the video format of NTSC versus PAL. Simply put, different countries have different currents of electricity. TV, computer monitor, video games etc create their images on-screen based on how fast the electricty flows. This is why a video game or VHS tape or DVD from most of Europe are not directly compatible with players from the USA or Asia. The GBA has it's own screen and it's own powersource and that's why no region coding... but if Nintendo really wanted to be jerks they could program it in! Swell hunh!!

Anyway, I just wanted to chime in and say don't feel stupid for not knowing this- its a lot of technical hoo-hah... but its fun to geek about at times!

Is there a website where you can find these codes for other players? If so, link it up please!

Yeah, I didn't even know you could do that.

Aha... once YOU were the Masters and *I* the learner! LOL

Gentleman, start your buying! Everyone take a look at which DVD you currently own... seriously the cheaper the better! Then hop on over to kindly ones at VideoHelp.Com. For DVD player 'hacks', start here:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

You can enter in the make/model of your DVD player and see if there is a hack for it. Around Christmas, I went out to my local stores to see which players were currently available. The reason I said 'the cheaper the better' is that many of what we consider 'off-brands' here in the USA are really 'ON-brands' in many other countries- countries that often sell multi-region DVDs as mentioned above. So let's take the player I chose for instance. For $40 at Target I got a Daewoo DVG-9200N. Search for it and voila: Here is the info for that player

Read down, see peoples comment on which codes work and which don't and try the ones you feel safe with. On this player it was as easy as:

1) Turn on Player

2) Open Tray

3) With the remote, key in the numbers 1,3,7,9. They will appear as "X's" in the top left hand corner of the screen.

4) After keying in the numbers, promptly choose your region code you'd like, from 0-6. The region code you select will appear as a number, not as x's, as did the 4 number hack code.

5) Throw in a Region 2 Pal or NTSC dvd to try it out.

And it voiks lak a cham!

Since then I've bought different Region discs from all sorts of world-wide retailers. There's many UK programs and films I'm interested in. (everyone here at OT.Com HAS to see the series 'Spaced' from the same crew that did 'Shaun of the Dead'- there are some HILARIOUS SW references as well as other genre fanboy stuff) I've bought many a disc since then from Amazon.UK as they have decent shipping to the USA.

Anyhow, I digress.

You also want to look for if the player is listed as doing internal NTSC/PAL conversion. Just click on the 'DVD Compatibility' link and you'll get something like this:

Spec Page

On that page it'll tell you every bloody thing the DVD player plays, reads, encodes, etc. Look for a player that says 'Multisystem PAL/NTSC Convert' which will mean it can do internal conversion. Some players do better job at this than other. This particular Daewoo converts in true progressive scan while some others just interlace the converted image...

But perhaps I have spoken too much. LOL.

That website rocks. I live in England and already have a multi region player but I'm moving to America later in the year and was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to watch my region 2 disks, but now that problem is solved. Thanks greencapt!!

Some DVD players don't even have the encoding thing, meaning they can play every disc available. Let's face it, this whole "region" thing is merely a nuisance and won't stop movie piracy. It has, in fact, the opposite effect, as they are losing market with this region thing.

Hey no problem! I found that site a bit back and was floored by all the info there! Just about anything you want to know about encoding, decoding, recoding, precoding, mecoding, treecoding, dvdloading, etc can be found there... the mind reels!

LOL. True that! The problem is we have the LOUDEST pricks in the world, so those are the ones everyone else in the world sees and hears. The rest of us hide... in shadows.. lurking...

We mostly come out at night..... mostly.

Yeah, just Chaltab.

I'm kidding, buddy!

Thanks for the info, GC. Yes, I am the learner.

I had heard rumors about this sort of decoding but never really investigated it.

Did you happen to notice that the first time they show the "Son of Kong" script on screen, it is dated Friday 1 April 2005?

I've not heard anything of it.

But you know how sucsessful it was despite not being good. And success means a possible sequel even if it's worse.

This is true, I live in USA and have several different region DVDs and in my GE DVD player loopholes menu I can turn off the region and it plays them all on my US TV. When I burn DVDs(for personal use!!!) I burn them region free. So this region thing is USELESS!!! I even have PAL Laserdisc player and some PAL Lasers which I play through my DVD recorder and they play fine also.

Wow! How do you make those big ol' discs fit in that tiny little DVD tray?

JK

Seriously, though, if using DVDXCopy, how do you make a disc region-free? Is there a setting I don't know about?

I know that in DVD Shrink you can select what region you want to burn it for in Re-Author mode.

It asks you what region to encode for with a pop of menu when you select "Burn through nero" or something.
