Probably not the best comparison, but interesting to see the difference. Top: Gonzo, Middle: Official 12/9 OUT, Bottom: 2004 dvd.

To be honest, for some reason, that's one of my most frequently-quoted lines.

There is no lingerie in space…

C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Thanks for those caps, bactaOT. Well, I know which one looks best to me. Can anyone with the discs handy post the exact same frames from EditDroid and moth3r?

After seeing them, I'll may stick to the DVD+R DL I made last night. Unfortunate too, I really wanted to be wrong about the picture quality.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

I actually like them.
I guess, hmm....I will have to buy these dvds...

Thanks again, Harlock! I like the inserts- especially the Star Wars one. That's my favorite poster art.

Just out of curiosity - did you get a chance to look at the SE discs? If so, did you notice any more "tinkering"?

those are the same SE discs from 2005 and 2004

Well, the picture quality looks good, not the best, but good. It is all good to hear they are dual layered.
Thanks for the info.

Not true. My brother is Assistant Manager at Blockbuster and I have seen many films days and sometimes weeks before the release date thanks to him. I have no reason to doubt these are legit and I am pretty content with the image quality.

And apart from the dodgy photoshop recreation poster covers, the rest of the packaging looks pretty nice (i.e. back cover and inserts)

I still don't believe you, Harlock415, and I need more proof...

...JUST KIDDING! Thanks for the pics!

Well I must admit that I am VERY pleased with the quality (compared to what I thought it was going to look like) and will more than likely be buying them now. Of course I wish they were anamorphic, but I am guessing there is a method to the madness here (God, I sure hope there is!) and Lucas/LFL/whoever is not putting a lot of effort and $ into these DVDs because they are focusing on the next medium instead and will really be wowing us with an OOT HD-DVD/Blu-ray or something. You may laugh but hey, we also heard the OOT would never be on DVD, so...

Oh and I still HIGHLY doubt an anamorphic OOT (or any OOT for that matter) will be in the '07 box set if there will be such a thing.

Yeah, some Blockbusters are already renting the OUT DVDs. I'm in Florida, and there was a news report about all the kids who got off from school today because of tropical storm Ernesto and how they planned to spend their day. One kid was walking out of a Blockbuster with the DVD of ANH and was like, "I got Episode FOUR, Star Wars, A New Hope..." The only reason I looked up at the T.V. was because the kid said "Episode FOUR," like he knew he was getting it before anyone else.

Hey Harlock415, are the audio screw ups in Star Wars on the '04 DVDs not there on the OOT DVD? I was a little worried about Lucas tampering a bit with these OOT releases to make it a little closer to the '04 version so they can sort of deny there ever being certain things. Sad thoughts, I know, but I put nothing past that man anymore...

I could be wrong, but I imagine that the sound is the same mix done for the '93 masters.

I was curious as to whether or not they fixed anything on the '04 discs (like the force theme being missing during the death star battle, etc.)

Well that clears that up. I wonder if Amazon.com has started shipping then? Almost makes me wish I preordered from Amazon (but then again, they'll be cheaper off the shelf, and they'll be PAL). How about posting some unresized PNG screenshots? specially of these frames:

01
02
03

or any other frames that outnow.ch has posted. I know it's hard to say this based on the two that you posted, but I strongly think a different master tape was used for the PAL. If you don't want to do them unresized+png... then resize to 720x540 and save a JPG quality 90.

I was going to bring that up but I was giving the benefit of the doubt. But yeah, I am really wondering how legitimate this is and if any place would get these in early, especially THAT early....and at a rental store no less....

I'm glad I wasn't the only one. Rental outlets don't have to pay any royalties, they just take all the profit for themselves, once paying the wholesale price. That's the reason for my skepticisim (that, and the fact that I've not seen any US reviews yet).

What I would really like to know... does it have the smearing? Like it has on the LDs in this scene?
When the camera is steady you can see the pattern in the sand but when it moves to the left the
pattern is gone and looks like one big smear.

Would very be interesting to see how the official OUT dvd compares to the EditDroid and moth3r versions.

I only have the gonzo, but the two you suggested would certainly make for a better comparison.

Just gave ESB a glance over and knocked out another quick scene comparison. Top: Gonzo LD rip, Middle: 'Outnow' 12/9 review pic, Bottom: Official 2004 OAT (Original Altered Trilogy).

Or should that be AOT (Altered Original Trilogy)???

Slightly off-topic, but one of my pet peeves from the official 2004 dvd set is the dodgy colour correction.

There is only one more thing more frightening than an asteroid hurtling towards you, and that's a PURPLE one!!

http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/9549/purpleasteroidsq5.jpg

Automated or not, the colour processing implemented on the 2004 dvd set was truly shocking and never ceases to amaze me!@

Admittedly the asteroid is a relatively minor offence, but how did some of this stuff pass QC?

WOw, Harlock, way to come through!! Of course now you will be bombarded with questions...

Firstly, what is the deal with the crawl? Does it match EOD or is it like in the trailer? Is the DVNR smearing still on the disks? How is the bitrate? Dual layered even? more screencaps?

From the low-res caps posted (better quality ones would be helpful) it just looks like a really good LD fan-transfer. The XO release seems to match it in terms of quality and detail, and the fact that release is being carefully hand-colour-corrected and restored puts it waaaay ahead this release from what i can tell so far.

I get even more excited with each screen shot, and the picture quality looks great (again, please keep in mind I am comparing it with what I thought it was going to be). I am now about 90% towards buying the 09/12 DVDs now.

The '04 pics do look sharp, but man, that blue-ish tint has got to go! I don't own those DVDs and never really saw them so this is all news to me...

LOL @ the purple asteroid! I too am wondering how all of these mistakes got through...missing music, light sabers that are the wrong color...wtf?!? Which brings me to:

Is it still really all that surprising that these OUT DVDs are not anamorphic? If a company can release its masterpieces on DVD with so many obvious mistakes yet still stand behind them, than it is no longer surprising to me in the least. Also, I HIGHLY doubt we will ever see these mistakes corrected (or if we do, it will be years from now). Rather, I think the company will explain away these problems via artisitc vision, "Oh that was the saber's crystals changing colors with the Force...", etc.
