Zombie seems to be off the grid these days.

So, you're saying we should check with Flynn?

Sup guys. Yeah, I've pretty much been busy being an OT.com hermit the last 9 months. Long story short, other things have been more important uses of my time. I'll probably be jumping back into the game in the next month or so.

Anyway, as far as any permissions go, personally I think it's cool people care enough to do this, although on the flip side I don't think audio-books are suited to anything like this (e.g. academic books). My publisher might not be as nice about this, but I can pretty much guarantee you that my publisher would never even consider an audio book, so it's not like any business would be lost. I guess the only concern would be over the quality. That would be my main concern too, because it's hard for to envision an audio version of this book that isn't boring, but maybe I lack imagination.

I think the main thing though is that I am knee-deep into the second edition of the book. The core of the book would be the same, but I imagine about 15% would be altered or changed. I don't know if this would actually end up changing the project timeline here, or if it would get me into trouble if I were to hand out the updated manuscript to anyone involved (probably it would), but it may be worth mentioning. Off the record, the second edition manuscript is due from me at the end of July for a print date for February 2013.

Otherwise, hey, if we asked permission for anything we did here we might as well not have this forum at all. The world of fandom will do what it wants.

Incidentally Zombie there's some weird stuff going on with the main site of Secret History of Star Wars, and my browser's warning me not to go there due to certain risks. Might just be me, but I wanted to mention it just in case it was happening with anyone else.

I guess we should submit sample chapters to see if this works. I also need a copy to read from. ;-)

You're not the only one getting the warning.

Then you are stuck reading from the free first 100 pages:

Both zombie sites have at times given these warnings even as the pages haven't changed.  I've clicked through the warnings which allows you to then give feedback that the site is not a bad site.  Maybe if that happens enough the malware warning could automatically be dropped.  There maybe a problem, (doubt it) but only the site owner can get that info from these automated systems. (if you get the details zombie, let us know)  I think any site can get on these lists just by someone submitting their name or something in the wordpress theme got compromised.

*EDIT*

The site behind the block is http://www.stopbadware.org which is an outfit sponsored by Mozilla and Google who are attempting to be helpful.  They have suggestions for what to fix, then after the site owner has done that, you can 'request a review' which will determine if the site gets off the block list.

If that's not a "Audiobooks are GO! For Launch!", it's at least an "Audiobooks are GO! For Test!"

So let's get cracking!  I suggest a 5 minute sample of you reading your chapter.  That way, if it works, you might not have to rerecord those 5 minutes (5 minutes down, 3 hours to go).  (Except, you know, when we get our hands on Zombie's revisions).

I'll revisit* the first post and make Chapter Assignments.  005, I guess I'll give you chapter 2, since it's in the first 100 pages.  However, I should really give your chapter 5 since that means you'd have to buy the book.  ;)

Zombie- where do we send the clips once we're done?  Do we post links here, or do you want them somewhere more private?

Happy recording folks!

To flip your flip side, sir, (courteously), a lot of my favourite audiobooks are non-fiction, and possibly academic.  Freakonomics, Malcolm Gladwell, etc...

Sluggo, Frink, and Bingo-

You three have been active in this thread without quite volunteering, so I've left you off of the chapter list for now.  If I was meant to take your snark as volunteering to read, please let me know and I will sign you up.

Others- I made assigments in the order your volunteered.  Chapters 2 and 3 are quite long, so if need to split those up, let's do that.  If you're cool with reading all of that, then have at it.  If there's a different chapter you'd rather read, let me know and we'll see what we can work out:

From 1st post:

Forward/Intro: Zombie

Chapter 1: xhonzi (~24 pages)
Chapter 2: 005 (~88 pages)
Chapter 3: Gaffer (~52 pages) (nice to have a female voice here, methinks)
Chapter 4: xhonzi(~12 pages)
Chapter 5: Akwat (~36 pages)
Chapter 6: Ziggy S. (~15 pages)
Chapter 7: <>       (~43 pages)
Chapter 8: <>       (~16 pages)
Chapter 9: <>       (~16 pages)
Chapter 10: <>      (~34 pages)

Conclusion: Zombie

*Chapter list and page length taken from e-book v 1.2.  Though the official text for this version would be either the first printed version or the revision due 2013.

Chapter 005?

We can probably make that happen.

I suggest not relying on zombie at all, as he's unsure where his partners in the book may stand.  Plus as it's a fan production, the fans should take care of all aspects; production thru distribution.

Some past fan readings of books have used soundcloud.com.  For example:

http://soundcloud.com/magnusedlund/cory-doctorow-printcrime

another place to house the project is the Internet Archive: http://archive.org/

Another method of working is instead of giving whole chapters to people, go page by page.  Some people might be interested in reading a certain section, then others can contribute by reading the pages in between.  But this approach requires more work on the person who's coordinating the files.  The page by page reading will provide some variety to those listening, and lead more towards this being a public production.

Since the book has lots of interviews and quotes, what about doing it more like a full cast audio drama?  One board member is the narrator and reads all prose content.  Everyone else gets "cast" as the different people that show up throughout SW production history and reads their part(s) "in character".

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

I admit my version of the book is a bit out of date, but if this is just a test, I suppose it doesn't really matter all that much?

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

none- I think we're using Zombie to validate the "test" clips.  From what he said, I think he'd like to give a thumbs up or a thumbs down based on these test clips.  Based on that, I think he will talk to his publisher and make sure we're kosher.

Ziz- That's a cool idea, but I don't know of anyone here that wants to read all of the narration.  I surely don't.  And it sounds like a lot more editing work and coordination to make sure it all gets done.

Gaffer, Akwat, (and 005)- Are you all saying you don't have the print version of the book?  Does this mean that you just have the .pdf that Zombie was sending out pre-release?  If so, Shame on you!
