Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost - DVD Upscale

Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost has an HD web-dl, but I’m not a huge fan of how it looks.

Comparison

For the most part the DVD is progressive, but there was a small handful of frames that showed interlacing artifacts. I did my best to clean these up. I also applied a very fine layer of grain to give it a more natural look.

Video
1080p h265 HEVC

Audio
Dolby Digital 5.1 - R1 DVD

Chapter titles and subtitles taken from the DVD as well.

The credits indicate it was originally mixed in Dolby Stereo, and the only good source of that mix would be the VHS release. I don’t have a way to rip VHS so if anyone does and can provide me the audio I’d greatly appreciate it.

Interesting project you got there and I certainly agree the new color grading from the WEB version looks off, but also, we can’t act like the original DVD is perfect either in that regard, especially when it comes to shadow detail and black crunch. If possible, is there anyway you can adjust the shadows and such to make it easier to see backgrounds and some details while still appearing dark and warm?

I don’t think it’s black “crush” as much as it’s an intentional use of “pure” black to fit the dark tone and color palette.

I think the web version itself is an upscale. I would guess they just upscaled the finished tape master instead of going back to the 35mm elements.
Given how good the upscaled DVD looks compared to the web (it’s even better in some places due to noticeable compression artifacts in the web) and I finished cleaning up the few bad frames before I knew the web version existed I figured it wasn’t worth the effort.

The new master is not an upscale. It’s just Warner’s typical aggressive handling of their animated catalog that became the norm around 2019.

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.
