Thoroughly awesome stuff. It brings a small sigh of relief anyway. At least we know now that the films will be looked after internally, but the fact that they'll also be effectively off limits to the public for at least the next century is certainly still very saddening.

The continued misuse and abuse of the copyright system is so aggravating. It was originally written as a law to help both content creators and the general public, whereas now it is used as a weapon by content owners (not even necessarily the creators) to wield AGAINST the public and to enforce their hold on the property. Lifetime plus 70 years? Give me a break. The only people who are going to care about Copyright after that amount of time are the greedy corporations who still want to milk money from it. I'm looking at you Disney!

Also, reading the response from Lucasfilm that the LoC could ONLY show the Special Edition, even for just a private screening, is absolutely disgusting. If it were up to me, I would've just exercised the right to show it anyway. If Lucasfilm don't want to oblige the LoC in any way, why should the LoC oblige Lucasfilm?

Presumably because LucasFilm has far deeper pockets to survive a lengthy legal battle, than does the National Film Register.

Indeed, but that would put LFL into a pretty bad light PR-wise, to sue National Film Register.

I'll be in DC this coming week. I'm curious as to how one gets such access? Last time I stood behind the glass in the LOC fantasizing about where SW might be hidden :p

The blue elephant in the room.

^ here's a place to start: http://www.loc.gov/about/faqs.html

When we were looking into visiting, there was a need for a special library card.  (you can start the process online so when you go there you just need to deal with the photo and other details)  canofhumdinger's did you have to go through that process or because of the 'Star Wars' connection this was all bypassed, since you were meeting with someone specific?  and not at the Library but one of it's satellite offices.

The prints are not in DC but in VA. But since they are protected now, you wouldn't be able to view them anyway. Once the telecine is done it sounds like that is what will be used for viewing instead.

Probably the only clip that wasn't on some old analog tape the Oscar people had access to. It would be like dropping VHS footage into all the HD stuff, if they were aware of the SE changes at all.

I know, but they could have chosen some other scene than the CGI X-Wing and TIE fighter battle, maybe a dialogue clip or something. It was like "here's some great scenes from old classics" and bam, CGI in 70's film.

That is the root of the problem. They probably don't even know it's an SE shot. Even the making of ESB book had a couple SE stills creep in by mistake.

We're coming up on the 15th anniversary of the SE's, and it's likely they are supplanting people's memories at this point.

So, the preview is now down. I'll be re-posting it on Monday or so once I get official a-ok from some of the people quoted there. Just thought I'd share some interesting news this weekend.

Several, actually. Star Wars is just as bad:

I need to get MoESB, but Rinzler said on his blog that the next printing wasn't going to have the SE shots. Apparently the publisher replaced his shots from the GOUT with SE shots when the felt the quality wasn't high enough. Ironic, really.

What's funny about reading this is how I can remember a discussion on these very forums from several years ago on the subject of the materials at the LoC. I came away from it thinking, "hmmm, I guess it's nice to know they have actual 35mm prints of the movies, but they'd be so faded by now and not really useful for any kind of restoration."

It's getting news like this that makes me happy I live in Northern Virginia.

Hats off to zombie, canofhumdingers, and anyone else who's helped bring this awesomeness to fruition. If the LOC now has proper copies of the OT, WE HAVE WON.

(Seeing you guys do these great things, while I just sit here and read about them on a forum, makes me feel a bit small. I honestly wish I could do more.)

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

not sure if we have won yet;  would still like to get my copy of OOT ;)

but for the sake of film history, this is a big deal and a relief.    whats the point of awards and recognition if a film can be radically altered from what made it a landmark? I tip my cap to all those that have been tireless advocates.

guess it also means we live to fight another day.

Hey, all I've been doing is sitting at my desk sending emails and writing web pages. There's nothing I do that you can't also. It's just a matter of sitting down and doing it.

Well, technically I am not supposed to be posting this right now. There may be some modifications in the days to come. This isn't meant to be public, so keep it under your hats for now, but I thought people might appreciate some good news for once.

Any idea when the article will be back up? I missed it! :(

Saw it. It is a nice documentary but the info is kind of generic - it would be interesting for someone who has no idea about the NFR and film preservation but most people here wouldn't learn much new from it.

Not much about SW in there either. In the short time they do talk about SW in the doc, they do use some footage from GOUT rather than the 2004 version (eg. the DS explosion), though the stardestroyer fly-over clip for example is the 2004 one and they don't mention anything about the necessity of preserving the original version in the doc itself, it's only mentioned very briefly in one of the extras.

Darn. Since the review mentioned the colorization debate, I was hoping some footage of Lucas testifying before Congress might be in there.
