LIES!

Ok, update time. This time I'm going to be honest with some bad news and good news.

First the bad news

No the edit is not complete. At the moment its sitting at around 95% done. Again everything remaining is effect shots.
Dealing with 1080p is making it hard to get the effects to come off as not standing out. The shots are getting done but
it takes time to get them right.

Also I'm sad to say that there will be no more preview clips other than the clip I'll be posting today. While I enjoy sharing my work with everyone I also want my work to remain as different as possible when it's done. Also nothing compares to the pain in my heart when the video hosting site decides to blast them all to hell.

Now onto the good news

I've been lying for awhile now.

Part of the reason my Ep 3 edit is not done yet is because I've also been working on Ep 1 and 2 at the same time. The reason being that I always planned on doing them, but I wouldn't expect any one to watch part 3 and then later want to watch the other 2 films once I got around to doing them. Also I didnt want to have to go back and redo Reign of the Darkside if when I got around to the other films and then decided something didnt work out story wise.

At the time of this post Episode 1 is about 50% done while Episode 2 is right about 90% done.

Episode 1 is proving to be the most difficult for sure. Alot of voice work needs to be done. I'm attempting to not have to redub Jar Jar and keep him being a respectable character as you'll see toward the end of the clip below. Alot of turning Mesa's into Me's and Okeyday's into Ok's. I'm also bringing Padmes voice closer to match her voice in Episode 2 and 3. I posted a rougher cut of this clip on another thread. This one is longer and alittle more toward a final product. Still needs some smoothing around the edges tho. Alot of political talk was cut also to quicken up the pace. Most of that will be covered in the opening crawl and later in the film.

Again, thanks to everyone who's shown interest in the edit and to those who helped me out along the way.

Holy shit. I've always hoped for this kind of surprise "actually I've done all three prequels in secret" announcement from one editor.

Hell, I've had my grand plans to do it myself, but never got round to it.

Really looking forward!

The Peek of Ep1 is great, although I almost expected Sidious to stutter and Qui-Gon to refer to the gas as "midiclorians".

Thanks, Frink, you ruined the movie for me :-P

This is really fantastic news. These are the sorts of lies I like to hear! Looking forward to more progress :)

The picture is still very murky and turquoise on the fed ship and was hoping the trade dispute angle would be ditched and the feds would sound a little less like they come from planet Nippon.

I don't know why the droids would need to talk to each other at all let alone say things like, "blast them!".

The biggest problem of all is Lord Sidious who is so clearly Senator Palpatine the film might as well be called The Perils Of Queen Penelope Pitstop.

Couldn't he look like his exposed prune face from ROTS when he is the Sith Lord and look like Palpatine when he is the friendly politician?

I really like what JasonN did with Sidious, removing the face so he looks like a Ring-wraith... while also deepening the voice.

"Love is the only reality and it is not a mere sentiment. It is the ultimate truth that lies at the heart of creation." - Rabindranath Tagore

"Many a doctrine is like a window pane. We see truth through it but it divides us from truth." - Kahlil Gibran

Yeah, that's pretty much my preferred way to handle the "Sidious is Palpy" problem.

That would be the easier option but as Bob has already spent a lot of time investigating the possibility of having the prune face Palp's real face which emerges during his fight with Mace, thinking the process backwards it would make sense if that was the face he presents to the Feds.

Bob, a few things I'd cut out:

-The line "We need to warn the Naboo" If they're coming down with the invasion force, it will be too late to warn them.

-The line where Qui-Gon says the name of the gas. How does he know?

And I have one F/x suggestion:

-When the Jedi get up from their seats, don't have them ignite their lightsabers. Remove the blade ignition effect, so it just looks like they pulled out the hilts. Then, when they ignite their blades in the smoke after the droids open the door, it will make for a much more dramatic introduction to the lightsaber.

Seeing as Gunray orders his droids to destroy what is left of the Jedi wouldn't it make more sense to kill them with something more destructive?

Poisoned gas would leave an entirely intact corpse, flaming gas would leave a smoldering room with a few remains for the droids to dispose of as ordered.

You could have the protocol droid hobble out with half of it's coverings melted off (using See Throughpio as an fx reference point).

The Jedi could have made the same escape that Obi-Wan and Anakin do in the deleted scene in ROTS (by cutting a hole in the floor).

You might even be able to fabricate a shot looking up at of the droids looking down through the hole.

Time

A few other things I'm not a fan of:

-Nute Gunray's hologram popping in, saying "They must be dead by now." and then popping out. That line comes off as really random. Maybe cut out the hologram entirely, and just have the droids arriving at the door?

-Jar-Jar saying "This way! Hurry!" By the time he finishes saying it, the Jedi are far ahead of him, and obviously ignoring him.

Its been a (LONG) while since I have watched TPM and I couldn’t get over the amount of Blue stars in that opening shot!

I like SOME of what you've done with Jar Jar. Some of it sounds really great, but at other times, it really does sound like parts are cut out.

Now, you said "Lots of voice work". What does that involve? What other voice work are you planning on doing?

WOW!

Unexpected... really unexpected...

Honestly,  I don't know what to say about the Phantom Menace clip. At this point, I think everyone's waiting for drastic, mind-blowing changes. But that intro is sort of kind of what we've already seen before [in other fan-edits].

Not that it isn't good, or hell of a lot better than what we originally got, it just doesn't seem radical and exciting enough. You know, like the stuff you did with ROTS?

But this is still awesome news! I'm excited as hell!

Good luck, man!

Yeah Episode 1 does still need alot of love so far. Several new FX shot will be done for the film. What those are I will not be talking about for fear of it branching out far too wide. Sort of a "Well you did this, so how about this?" Which I think was doable with Episode 3. But Episode 1 was so much of a letdown to so many, that I fear the size of change requests that would come once people see some of whats planned.

To answer aalenfae. Yeah some of Jar Jar's lines are pretty chopped up. I'm currently shopping for new headphones. It sounded pretty good when I gave it a listen with a semi cheap set I have currently to work with. Once I listened to it on my Iphone speakers tho, yeah some of the cuts are harsh.

The Voice work I mentioned is still pending, based off what I feel I can get away with of the original material. I'm currently trying to keep Jar Jars voice in, cause I think a redub or captions would be twice as distracting. Smaller parts will be redone mostly by myself.

Being a Night club Dj has many pluses.  One of them being two industry friends who have offered to let me use their recording studio. I will be making raw tracks and then taking them home to add the proper effects needed based on the setting. I have a very strong gift of impersination. I already have the lines I need for Episode 3 for General Grevious written. As well as the video clip montage of the parts I will need to voice act. So I can watch it while I record. Once Episode 1 Is fleshed out I will be heading to the studio to do my best to get all the voices I will need recorded. I tryed to do this at home but it comes out very home made.

To MrInsaneA. Would the line "Destroy whats left of them" fit that part better? Because the first time I worked on that clip I removed the whole holo, but the amount of time the droids spent standing there feels very wrong. And cutting the clip shorter leaves all the droids standing in very bad spots in regards to the clip before or after.

And I'm looking for a better line for Jar Jar than "This way! Hurry!" I'm sure I can find something better.

I guess my basic question - to get to the heart of what I want - will you be redubbing any of Jake Lloyd? haha

Maybe just, you know, redub them as well? Seeing as how their lip movement is out of sync anyway, there shouldn't be a lot of restriction. Plus, I think, anything would be better than those Asian stereotype voices...

As for Jar Jar - you can take a look at Ahmed Best's filmography http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0078886/, there's a list of episodes he did for "The Clone Wars" (not to mention his work in "Robot Chicken"), maybe you can use some of that stuff?

But, again - really excited!

This deal is getting better all the time...

"Destroy what's left of them" works. Though I'd rather that you just re-dub them...however, I know that can be difficult.

Whatever happened to Magnoliafan? I recall he got a voice actor to redub Jar Jar, the Nemoidians, and Grievous for his planned revamped edits, and the samples he gave seemed promising...he seems to have disappeared now. Maybe starting fresh with a new voice would be the most liberating (and difficult...) choice?

Why bother changing Padmé's voice in Episode I to sound like how she was in Episode II, when it takes place ten years before it? The character should be 14 in this movie.

Because Padme as queen has that stupid deep monotone ADR'd voice that makes her sound even more boring than her character is already.

How was it ever explained that she has a completely different person's voice when dressed in Royal robes anyway? Did a wizard do it?

I think it's her "Christian Bale Batman Voice." She does it in her Amidala persona, so people don't suspect she's Padme.
