Just got home from seeing it and yes, it was a great movie. I definitely recommend it although I have to admit the Spiderman teaser is what got me most excited.

By the way, I was thinking about what David Carradine said in Kill Bill and I greatly disagreed with it:

What do you guys think, is Superman the disguise that Clark Kent uses to fight for "Truth, justice, and the American way," or is Clark Kent the persona that Superman/Kal-El puts on so that he fits in with society?

The former, IMHO.

Yeah, I believe it's the former as well, although it's definitely the latter for Batman.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I believe that Clark Kent is the real personality. Had he grown up on Krypton he would have been one of the shyest boys in his class. But because he has such great powers on Earth he takes the initiative to help out those who desperatly need it. But he's not allowed to interfere with Human events (i.e. war, civil up risings, political endevors. He saves people from the symptoms, not the cause) so he does what he can.

A someone once said: "Clark Kent is who I am. Superman is what I can do."

Batman on the other hands is who the man really is. Bruce Wayne is just the social face he puts on.

And I gotta say, for someone who never watched Superman growing up, I am totally in love with this movie. I'm seeing it again tomorrow.

And the Spider-Man trailer looked cool, but I'm only excited about seeing it for Topher Grace. I've noticed that a lot of people who didn't much care for Superman Returns said that Spider-Man 1 and 2 were much, much better (along with X3). I personally thought that Spider-Man 2 sucked. It was so cheezy and cliched in my opinion. And sure, I liked the X-Men movies, but good lord I loved Superman. To each his own I guess.

And for those of you who took Chemistry, please direct your attention to the fact that Krypton is a real element.

That movie was called Batman Begins.

Superman Returns was damn good fun too, but not in the same league with BB. I'm happy to say that I really did enjoy SR and I think they did capture the spirit of the Christopher Reeve era. I'm eternally grateful that this was not a Jon Peters production of a McG film.

I saw it in IMAX, and was a little annoyed as a result. Despite what you've heard about the new 2D->3D conversion, there is plenty of double-imaging to induce headache. Of course, I was on the next-to-the-front row and had to crane my neck upwards the whole time. Maybe it's better if you're rear and center.

IMAX did, in the opening credits, make me feel like that same six-year-old boy who saw Superman: The Movie on opening day. For that portion of the movie alone I did feel like a kid again, and neither the prequels nor Batman Begins brought back that feeling. This was the first time in a long time I felt like a kid at the theatres.

I can't figure why this one got a PG-13. I didn't see any headbutting or bloodletting, didn't hear any cursing, nookie was only implied ... I think this flick got hosed on the rating. It's not appropriate for a 3-year old, but I think an 8 year old can handle it just fine.

Long story short, I agree with DAYV's review go see it. But let me add that IMAX isn't a necessity.

Yeah, the rating rather confused me too. I think it's just that we're so used to PG-13 meaning "Almost R-Rated" that something barely beyond PG does't feel like that much.

I really enjoyed Superman Returns. It's not as good as Batman Begins, and I really wish there had been a Superbrawl somewhere in the film. The biggest problem was that it didn't really inspire me. Superman is supposed to inspire, and I found Jor-El's words more inspirational than most of the film. That said, it still was quite good. The effects were amazing, and Routh works as Superman. The suit even didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. Lois Lane, though, I don't know. Kate Bosworth did a fine job for who she is and what her part was, but I still think Lois should have been cast as somebody older and with more spunk. I'm so used to the Dana Delany version of Lois that this version just didn't feel 'right' if you know what I mean.

Hey, I didn't realize that she was the woman from Tombstone.

Is the Superman Animated Series any good? I never really gave it a chance.

Everyone keeps saying "It's not as good as Batman Begins! It's not as good as Batman Begins!"

Now BB was a fine movie and I'm more of a Batman fan than I am a Superman fan, but I just don't see how "Batman Begins" is better than "Superman Returns." People keep saying, "There was too much talking, not enough fighting. The opening credits were too long, blah blah blah." People are so used to seeing shit blow up every 32 seconds that when there is character development the audiance sees it as boring. You also have to remember that this movie is a "restart and reboot" of the whole Superman franchise. It hasn't been in theaters for 19 years and hasn't had any GOOD movies in over 26 years. People who bitch and moan that SR didn't have enough mayhem and violence are probably the same people who would laugh and clap their hands if Superman blew out a star by farting. No body appreciates subtlety any more.

Now back to my point, both BB and SR are quality films (and most of us are just simply saying that), but I found myself more in love with Superman Returns than the batman movie. I hardly remember the Batman movie as it is. I loved it, but for some reason it didn't leave that much of an impact on me (I got lost in the whole plot of Bruce Wayne training with Oscar Schindler on some Tibet mountain), where as the Superman movie...I cried twice during the film. It's fantastic. I guess I can relate more with Superman? I donno.

My personal opinion: Superman Returns > Batman Begins. It was just a phenominal movie for me. I am in total love with Brandon Routh right now because of it. Much in the same way I was with Spider-man all those years ago. And that Superman suit? Total win. 100 times better than any fruity costume that has ever been.

Batman begins was good, but I think I'm one of the few people around here who's on record as saying they didn't love it as much as everyone else seems to.

Now that is just genius. Somebody needs to make that movie.

War does not make one great.

The 1996 series is quite good. It wasn't quite as good as the Batman series, but dang if it didn't have the best animated series finale ever.

Hmm, I'll add that on to my DVD "To buy" list.

I still only have the first Batman TAS set as well, I've been meaning to get the others but there is always some unforseen expense that snatches my money away.

I need to buy those DVDs too (Batman). I have rented all 4 volumes from the library (for the amzing price of only $4!!!) and watched just about all of them. God those cartoons were so good. My whole childhood afternoons rapped up in 4 neat little packages. It's why I'm such a huge Batman fan ('asides from the Joker). He's so dark and awesome.

There is a saying: "Women want to date Batman, but they want to marry Superman." God, could that be any more true? *swoon*

Books are always free of course. For music CDs it's 50 cents. For DVDs it's $1.

I rent all my movies from the library. Better selection than any Blockbuster (except I cannot for the love of cake, find "Attack of the 50 foot woman) and is cheep as hell. I mean, one freakin' dollar for the first box set of Batman Volume 1? It doesn't get any better than that.

I thought it was pretty good, but had potential to be better...

Routh did a really good job. His persona really tied in with Reeve's very well. They didn't have to turn him into a Super-stalker though.

Lois was way off. She came across as a preppy high-school girl that treated Clark like poop. (THAT relationship was REALLY lacking) They tried to give Lois so much strength that she pretty much did not show any sort of fear... like she really did not need Superman at all. Margot Kidder knew when to turn on the screams in the face of death and made scenes more believable. I guess having a kid as a teenager does that. *shrugs*

Character building was there, but the character depth really wasn't. I think that Lois kept it from being as awesome as I was hoping it would be. That is just me, though.

Galatians 2: 20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Man, because of the bloody football, they are delaying the movie untill 14 July.
What a pile of Poo...

But hey, Italy are in the finals, so I shouldn't really moan.

Can't wait to see the SR, but I suppose Pirates 2: Dead man's chest will do for now...I'll see that tommorow..on my birthday

One detractor of sorts: During the whole film, I kept thinking Parker Posey should've been cast as Lois. If anybody could have played Margot Kidder's Lois, it was her. When the answer is staring at a casting director like that, I'm surprised when it doesn't get seen. This isn't a slam on Kate Bosworth, who did a better job than I expected. But her Lois was so toned down compared to Loises of recent memory.

That's exactly what I said after seeing it (Posey as Lane). A noble effort by Singer to revive the Donner style, which has great touches, but ultimately fails.

I just got back from seeing it again this afternoon, and I gotta say, I still love this movie. I personally didn't have a problem with the Lois Lane character. I thought she was fine.

They tried to give Lois so much strength that she pretty much did not show any sort of fear... like she really did not need Superman at all. Margot Kidder knew when to turn on the screams in the face of death and made scenes more believable.

Yes, but you have to take that in context. Lois has been abandoned for 5 years. Superman wasn't there to save her anymore (and lordy, did she need saving during those early movies) so she had to put on the "tough girl face" just to survive.
Not to crap on anyone's childhood, but I hated the Kidder Lois. She screamed ALL the time. I mean, when I rented the first movie my aunt turned to me and said "She's a screamer, isn't she." Oye. Lois really didn't do anything for me. And don't get me started about the "musical number" that when on when Superman takes her for a ride...

Anyway, I guess I'm just not a fan of the first movies (or the bright red giant S-ed cape). Superman Returns made the movie real for me. It put in human elements, realism, and cut down on the 3 stoodges antics of the first movie. "Turn around men while I give this woman 'CPR'." "Coming Mr. Luther! Woop woop woop woop!" "I will fly around really fast and make the world GO BACK IN TIME and some how not kill everyone on the planet by doing so!" *rolls eyes*

I was born in 1983. I didn't really grow up with Superman at all. This new movie may be as important to me as the original 1978 movie is to some of you older fans.

Someone said that "Superman isn't a subsitute for religion. But it does work as a subsitute for mythology." The Christ-like allagories in this new film are warming, and for the strong Christian that I am it helps put a more...tangable...spin on a theme that I know all so well." This movie touched me in more ways than one, and now it will always be one of my favorites.

For some real obnoxious screaming heroine action, check out Kim Basinger in Batman (if you've done so already, do it again). The favorite Bat-flick of many is totally ruined for me in the second hour by a woman who screams at every possible turn. One who apparently photographed dead bodies on the front lines of war.

For me the one who wins THAT award was Kate Capshaw in 'Temple of Doom'. Sheesh! That film would have worked SO much better for me if I hadn't have had to listen to her shriek and whine through the entire film.
