STAR WARS: LAST OF THE JEDI (fanedit of 'Return of the Jedi' - unfinished project) — Page 2

I'll look into killing off Lando, yeah - at the moment, though, I'm editing the Luke/Yoda/Vader/Emperor scenes (maybe as a way to starve off working on those damn Ewoks....) and doing research if the "montage" ending is technically feasible.

Right now, I'm rewatching some of Harrison Ford's later movies see if there are any scenes that could work to portray an older Han Solo (Indy 4, perhaps). Now finding actors to use as older Luke and Leia, that's going to be more difficult (the actors need to somewhat resemble older versions of the characters and the film scenes have to be close to the ones I want to portray in the ending)

Mark in Slipstream would make for a good battle hardened Jedi (the face fuzz gives him a bit of an Obi-Wan look and makes him look even older than he was at the time), shame that movie is such bobbins because he was really good in it and I love the late Bob Peck, if anything could be rescued out of that film I would be pleased beyond words.

I'm not sure if it got a DVD release however.

Slipstream Hamill

In a similar vein Carrie did an even more rubbish film, The Time Guardian which might have a few salvageable frames.

Slipstream Hamill

Quick search shows that it was released on DVD at one point:
http://www.amazon.com/Slipstream-Bill-Paxton/dp/B0000A03KA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1239388665&sr=1-3

From the looks of it, though, its only in 4:3 "Pan and Scan" and the video quality may not be that great (just reading a few of the reviews). Still, the character that Hamill plays would make a pretty good "older Luke".

Crickey Ben we seem to be synchronised today :-)

The Time Guardian has got a DVD release too (more Carrie in metal boobs action) I'm not sure if it would be useful but you might be able to get something out of it (even if it's just Carrie with metal boobs).

There would be a bit of irony of sampling from Slipstream for a ROTJ edit because it would mean Gary Kurtz gets directly into the final part of the OT at last (even if it wasn't from his finest work).

Still working on this bit by bit (although it's about as painful as when I had to edit through AotC, as there's so much crap to go through...).

I looked into rearranging "Yoda's Death" to after the opening scene of Vader arriving on 2nd DS, followed by the Tatooine/Jabba sequence, but I don't think it works as well for story structure - I think it's better to do the "Rescue Han" subplot at the beginning and get it over with, since it has nothing to do with the Jedi/Vader/Emperor subplot (which takes over the rest of the film afterwards). I also tried cutting Obi-Wan from the story (so Luke never meets him and learns more about Vader), but removing it creates some plot holes later when Vader captures Luke on Endor, so I'll probably keep most of it (except for the "Leia is your sister" parts.

I'll probably won't be able to do is remove Han's "General" status either (which I thought was a ridiculous idea, since he's been gone from the Rebelion for how long???), since so many characters keep refering to him as General.

On the plus side:
- I've completely removed that damn "Alien Musical" scene in Jabba's palace (Why, Lucas? Why?!)
- rewritting Jabba's subtitles is kinda fun
- editing the "speeder bike chase" for better pacing and action

I could kiss you man!  I haven't even seen this and it is already my favorite fan edit.  So long, stupid musical number!

My edit of the "Death of Yoda" sequence (I took out all mention/discussion of Luke having a sibling/twin sister, removed Yoda's contradictory statement about Luke not being a Jedi, and completely cut out Luke's meeting with Obi-Wan):

I commented on the YouTube video as well, but ... wow!  That was fantastic!  I may not have to do my ROTJ edit after all ...

And here's the end of the Luke/Vader duel and the Emperor's death - in addition to cutting out the mention of Luke's twin sister (now the "her" in Vader's speech is the person Luke cares the most, Leia), I re-edited the entire sequence so that it doesn't intercut between this scene and the Han/Lando/Rebels attack scenes (which now come after the Emperor's death):

My edit of "Luke's goodbye to Leia on Endor" scene - since Luke and Leia are NOT twins in this edit, I had to tweak their relationship to have more of a romantic undercurrent:

I am not sure about this one.  It just seems abrupt with Luke suddenly talking about his mother.  What would come before that?

I think the Luke/Leia conversation is perfect.    At the very least, it's the best possible thing that can be done with the scene, and it just so happnens to work really well.

In the Force-lightning scene, there are some awkward music cuts that stand out, but other than that it's very good as well.

Still haven't recieved my DVD of Slipstream from Amazon (god, they're taking forever...), so I still don't know whether or not there's any usable shots of Hamill in that film to use as an older Luke Skywalker - one big worry I have with trying to make a new ending is that I fear it will look too "composited" to work effectively and it won't match the original footage of ROTJ (which was one of Lucas's major problems his new "CGI reworkings" in the OT Special Editions).

I'm back to toying with the idea of ending the film either with the normal ending or with Vader's funeral pyre and having the panning shot of Luke fade to black/starfield and start the credit scroll (with the "normal ending" maybe as an epilogue that plays after the credits... or maybe not, I don't know)

Also, does anyone have any thoughts or possible ideas on what could be done with Boba Fett?

Cut him out completely.  He serves no purpose in ROTJ.

Absolutely! That was fanservice, pure and simple. If he had not become popular after ESB, he may not have been in it at all! People would have just thought 'how did Han end up at Jabba's palace? Oh yeah, that bounty hunter brought him in for the reward.'

As for the lightning/Palpy/Vader scene, I just made a comment about it at YouTube and I'd like to hear some thoughts from others. Another user suggested said "what if cutting the "you will be destroid" line? you know, "so be it, jedi" and then he attacks."I replied "I must say I really like that suggestion of cutting the "you will be destroyed" line! I mean, it's cool that he would just start going nuts with the lightning, rather than announcing his intentions beforehand. ;)"

Yes/no?

I agree - that's a really good idea.  At the very least, someone should do a test of it, just to see if it works out.  I would, but I don't have my ROTJ DVD at the moment.

Not a bad idea.  That shot of Palpy almost sneering into the camera while he says "If you will not turn" could go without a problem.

So yeah, I'm still working on this one - I'll try to finish it, but it's getting a bit hard, because I'm kinda losing my interest: basically, for as much as I try to edit and cut Return of the Jedi, I still just really don't care for the story or characters very much (which makes things difficult when you're trying to re-edit the film).

I guess for myself, I've always felt that the "Star Wars" story ends best with the final shots of The Empire Strikes Back, with Luke, Leia, the droids, and Rebel Alliance drifting out into the stars.

You know, I'm always suprise that for as much criticism, anger, and utter hate that TPM recieved from audiences, those same people will give RotJ a free pass just because it's part of the "Original Trilogy" even though it's as equally flawed as TPM. (actually, I think it has even more flaws.... I mean, I am extremely satisfied with and do enjoy watching my Attack of the Federation edit, but I'm having a rather hard time trying to watch Last of the Jedi and care much for it)

I think this is also why I haven't been on top of editing and showing more of my fan-o-matic clips...specifically when I got to the ewok village...I've cut and rearranged quite a bit of it but it's just not...star wars-y...ya know? I mean, I like ROTJ for what it is...but it lacks ALOT.

So with Leia not being "the other" in this version does Luke still have an unseen twin sister out there?

If not what would Vader use as a trigger to make him go ape?

Is "the other" thing dropped completely?
