And I’m not sure what to think about the new ending. I’m sure however Ady pulls it off will look fantastic. It’s just I liked seeing the happy ending with everyone together celebrating.

Agree with this. The ending of ROTJ is even more sweeter now that we know that we never see these characters together on screen again. I hope he at least keeps that final shot, even if it isn’t in the same sequence.

I’ve always liked the shot of Luke grinning at the ghosts, but it sounds like we’re getting a more somber ending for Revisited. Fine with me, since he’s going to find more appropriate music to go along with it.

I made a quick mock up of what the ending of ROTJ:R might look like since Ady confirmed that the final scene will be Luke and Vader.

Sound effects were added in and the ending music from ROTS was used to streamline the mock-up. I’m not too sure where the force ghosts could be edited in but I’m sure Ady will think of something.

I figured I’ll bump this up as it fits the current discussion better that when I originally posted it. I think it will be hard to implement the ghosts in the scene since Luke doesn’t look anywhere else besides the pyre in the shot. As for the celebration, it would seem odd that Luke just has Vader’s body stored some place until after he parties and then goes back later on to burn it. I’m not sure how that will be addressed.

The Skywalker Saga:
I / II / III / IV / V / VI / VII / VIII / IX
This is the way.

Don’t forget it’s possible to take the later shots of Luke and “just” removing the background to change it.

Adywan, do you plan on changing the font used on “RETURN OF THE JEDI” in the title crawl to the font used for The Empire a Strikes Back and A New Hope’s crawls? Sorry for asking again if you have already answered this.

He already fixed the crawls!

I knew I was missing out on something. Thank you!

I assumed that Luke wouldn’t acknowledge the ghosts or be aware of them, and they would just be watching him from a distance.

A protocol droid being able to feel pain ( or the appearance of pain) and a walking battery being programmed to feel pain are two entirely different things. Protocol droids were made to have a human like appearance and , in the case of 3P0 especially, human traits. These things would have been programmed into them because of their function: to converse with other life forms. A Gonk droid is just a walking battery. Why bother programming any emotions into something like that?

One the main reasons i hated that scene from the first time i saw it is the god awful voice is was given. Suddenly a gonk droid can talk and say “no”? It was given a babyish vocal and sounded ridiculous. If that was supposed to show the droids peril in Jabbas palace, then it fell completely flat and made something that could have been perilous into another facepalm humour moment. And, if it was meant to be humorous, it failed because no one laughed during the many showing i saw in '83, and this was back when the audience got involved with the film, cheering, clapping etc. The droid being pulled apart had the same stupid kiddy vocalising. That type of silly-vocal style plagued ROTJ and then grew with the prequels (and then the new=SE with obi-wan’s howl). Then we have salacious crumb, Chewies Tarzan yell, the ewok during the speeder chase…Even R2 suffered with his now baby like sounds. Ridiculous sound effects/ vocals. These things have to be changed. There are so many parts of ROTJ that just seem like a failed, comedic parody of Star Wars.

That’s why I love you, Ady. Even if I don’t completely agree with a change, you always have a darn good reason for doing it. 😃

And for those who were wondering, that clip does also confirm Ady added a fourth period to the ROTJ ellipsis. As minuscule as it may be, I’m actually glad he felt the same about it 😃

By the way, does anyone know what happened to the user, muddyknees? He used to be an avid contributor to this site during ESB:R and I appreciated his thoughts. Has he just moved on in life? I hope he’s okay.

Wishlist Of Ideas/Suggestions For Improving ROTJ

I don’t know if this was addressed before, but if it isn’t, it should be an easy fix (assuming Adywan feels it should be fixed). It always bugged me that when Luke finally decides to attack the emperor, he moves his hand and uses the force to retrieve his saber, but everything happens so slowly that Vader could go to the bathroom and comeback in time to prevent Luke’s blade to touch the emperor. If the idea was to make a fast attack, it was a big failure.

I feel that the right way to do it would be the saber to start moving by the same time Luke starts to move his arm to get it, so by the time his arm reaches its final position the saber would arrives at the same time. With other editing it could be a much faster attack.

Just curious, anyone else thought about this before?

Another thing that doesn’t feel right to me (sorry if it was discussed before) is how Luke fights with the Rancor. He doesn’t look like a Jedi, he doesn’t use the force in any moment. And his victory in the end looks like plain (too much) lucky. I mean, he was lucky to have a rock near his feet when there was no time to find one, and them he throws the rock and he is lucky (again) to not only hit the button but doing it strong enough to activate it. All this would be ok if it was Luke from the ANH that was fighting, but it was a Jedi that was there. For someone who was really lucky to get out alive he seems too arrogant when he says to Jabba that he is making a bad mistake by not negotiating with him.

Although I don’t see much how to improve the fighing, at least the end could be more in a jedi way. Luke shouldn’t throw a rock, all he would do is raise his hand (maybe a new shot with only his hand), use the force and the button is pushed. At least it would be more of a Jedi way of finishing the fight.

Has the possibility of using Sebastian Shaw + ROTS wardrobe been discussed? Him looking like Anakin in his youth confused me a bit, and him wearing Obi-Wan’s robes confused me even more.

Just food for thought.

I see some discussion about the use or not of the deleted scenes. In the case of Luke building his lightsaber, I think it can be used (IF Adywan is interested, of course). Luke’s face doesn’t appear in the scene, so it is possible to rotoscope his face and upscale it to HD (720p) using a new background (again, if someone is interested in a new background). His hands building the lightsaber can be replaced by any other hands.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind if it is just the entire scene upscaled / cleaned and inserted in the movie. This is a fanedit, if George Lucas with all his money didn’t care for doing the best job in the world, why a fanedit must keep such high standards? I for sure won’t complain if a upscaled version of a deleted scene appears in a fanedit.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Why not just film a brand new scene, all that is needed is a prop light saber?

That works even better, since we don’t see Luke’s face, you can use a stuntman in the same way as ESB:R.

Just a comment, when it was announced that GL would be releasing a special edition of SW, I thought that enhancing Obi-wan x Darth Vader duel by adding new scenes would be doable, since anyone can play Darth Vader and Obiwan fought with his hood all the time.

I couldn’t be more wrong about GL’s intentions with the Special Editions, of course.

Guys he’s already directly said multiple times he won’t be using deleted scenes.

I personally really like the reveal of Luke’s lightsaber and Jedi-ness in the sail barge scene, so I’m against Luke using the force vs the Rancor and I’m against the use of the deleted scene with hooded Luke+lightsaber.
In another topic: Ady, would you consider using the harmonica solo from the SE in Jabba’s Palace instead of Lapti Nek or Jedi Rocks? I know you said you wouldn’t use anything the SE added to that scene, but I don’t know if you ever thought about this. If so, sorry.

I like that reveal too, although it’s more of a lightsaber reveal than a Force one - he’s already Force Choked a couple of guards, Mind Tricked a majordomo and Force Pulled a gun by that point.

They told me they’d fixed it!

Yeah, but I feel like it was all leading up to Luke just going full Jedi. I don’t know, the fact that he took care of the Rancor, the first real threat, without using the force, added to the sail barge scene.

I agree it would be good to see Luke fighting more like a Jedi and not just swinging a bat. I suspect that whole scene is going to be re-edited - the current edit is just terrible. It was only fairly recently I discovered that Chewie gets shot among all that mess, bringing the ROTJ shot hero count to four.

One point of view people may be missing about the Rancor pit scene…Luke was visibile to Jabba and many of his associates and underlings most of the time in the pit, even when at the gated entrance. He probably didn’t want to use the force unless absolutely necessary otherwise it would give his “hand” away to Jabba who would then take precautions against these witnessed abilities and likely foil Luke’s plan.

Pretty much the only time he is properly out of sight is when he’s under the rock overhang (rear gated entrance still closed at this point) and you might say he used the force then to smash the Rancor’s hand with the rock as I don’t think a normal person doing the same would even cause the Rancor to flinch, let alone rear back and roar in utter pain.

He does use the force earlier to choke the initial two palace guards but no one else is nearby to witness this to understand how they died.
