Does anyone know the difference between the 12 parts of ESB and the Barebones 4 parts? I’m not sure which one I should be getting

Barebones is the DVD version. I think “Barbones” refers to the DVD menu, not the film itself. which is the same.
It was made from the 720p original release so I believe any changes made int he 1080p aren’t in the Barebones version.

Just when I thought I had the hang of this, I get thrown another curve ball. So one has changes and the other one doesn’t? I thought it was just size difference or quality in picture

the changes are mostly just aesthetic, and won’t be apparent if you’re watching it on DVD.

So glad to hear you’re feeling better!

Those comparisons are incredible. It’s like they ran a grayscale filter over the DSII or something.

(As for the rest of the film, I will just be over here chanting “Prune face! Prune face!” in the corner)

My feelings about that console on the Executor bridge are well known. (same goes for the shutters being closed to the corridor leading off it) I’m guessing the set wasn’t entirely preserved between ESB and ROTJ. I would prefer the Tydirium code scene to be shifted to the console seen in ESB where the Hoth generator is identified. But early days still. Colours, colors and collars looking good. I’ve asked elsewhere but PayPal isn’t playing nicely with my bank. Is there an alternative to make donations like direct transfer?

I’m back 😃

Feeling much better now ( well , apart from the past week where i’ve been laid up in bed with a nasty gastric virus.) Thanks to everyone for the well wishes.

I’m back working on ROTJ:R & ANH:RHD. Getting a long quite nicely with the grading for ROTJ. I’ve juct completed the section where Leia meets Wicket, so that will give you some idea where i have got up to with that. It still shocks me just how dull and lifeless the 2020 blu-ray is. And it really has some shocking sections where the image has been completely bleached out, either with the colour grading that’s seemed to somehow remove most of the blues of the film or the fact that the grader decided that he would brighten the image up so much that it would blow out all the details, or just using crappy power windows to brighten sections of the image and losing all contrast.

Anyway, this is just a short one today. I will be posting a clip showing a new section of ROTJ:R’s colour grading later in the week, but for now here are some screenshots:

The 2020 Blu-Ray, for some unknown reason, removed the blue tint to not only the TIE fighters but also the Executor. These were blue in every version up until 2020.

With this one, the grader used a power window mask around Leia and Han in the 2020 edition, but didn’t properly track the movements so you get a moving mask with almost grey blacks. I replaced this with the 2011 blu-ray, with major clean up. Surprisingly , for the 2011 blu-ray, there’s a bit more detail in the shadows than the 2020 version.

And , one shot that took me forever to fix, is this one. What the hell has happened to all the colour in the 2020 edition? (The Gifs may take some time to load up, so be patient)

It is so good to see you recovering, I hope your health continues to improve and I’m so happy for you and your family.
Its so shocking to see the difference in vibrantcey in the comparisons, but it shows just how impartant it is in the death star shot where you can finally see the red construction beams again!!

Stay safe and may you’re healthy stay well!

Adywan you have brought so much life back into this movie.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Much Better than the Blu Ray! Fantastic! Looks EXACTLY as I remember it at the Edens 2 in Northbrook, IL at 12:01 AM May 25th 1983 on that fabulous curved cinemascope screen. It always baffled me how all the digital releases got the color so darn wrong.

You live in Northbrook? So do I!

Fantastic news that you’ve been recovering well adywan.

Good to see your latest update, and your re-grading continues to look terrific as always.

My local cinema started showing a few re-releases this month (Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy, and Rogue One), so I braved taking a couple of my younger family members to see the current version of A NEW HOPE on the big screen for their first time viewing last week.

They should be sued under the Trades Description Act for using ‘1977’ in their advertising, but I knew going in that it would just be the latest ‘Special Edition’ version - so I had to suffer the likes of the Ronto’s butt…the jawa swinging from a Ronto…Greedo’s “Maclunkey!”…and Han standing on Jabba’s tail etc. as best I could. 😃

I hadn’t actually seen the latest ‘Disney’ version before, so the new silver ‘Lucasfilm’ logo at the beginning set my teeth on edge a little - while it suits the more ‘sombre’ mood of The Empire Strikes Back quite well, I’ll always prefer the colouful previous version to kick off Star Wars and Return Of The Jedi, due to it’s more ‘optimistic’ visually-interesting look. Just a minor thing in the scheme of things, however. The likes of the Mos Eisley scenes also looked quite washed out, compared to the more vibrant colour of the previous ‘Special Edition’ releases I noted.

The kids thoroughly enjoyed the movie however, and I was glad that they got to see and hear it on the big screen for maximum impact. The score and sound effects sounded terrific of course (If I ever happen to be watching a movie on my own, I like to listen through headphones for a similar ‘cinematic sound’, so as not to annoy my neighbours!), and now they are looking forward to seeing The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi on the big screen next week also. They are in for a treat, but I’ll just have to suck up ‘Jedi Rocks’ too, I guess… 😃

Here is the colour grading comparison clip i promised. Sorry that it is download only, but YouTube and Vimeo instantly blocked it so this is the only way i could share it.

The original 2020 Blu-Ray grading is really throwing out the new grade in some places ( especially skin tones because in the 2020 blu-ray they are very yellow/ orange or desaturated, which makes the new grade look more magenta or over saturated) so i added just the new grade to the end of the video so you can see what it really looks like.

It’s just over 1gb and about 17 minutes long

I’ll be posting again in the next couple of days with more detailed plans of what’s coming up with ROTJ:R & ANH:RHD.

Are you still going to film new shots for the Battle of Endor at Redwood National and State Parks, or were those plans scrapped?

Yeah, that definitly seemed the most ambitious part of the project. However, if Ady is able to be pulled off it will be epic!
