Speaking of the space battle, I’m assuming Ady will be fixing a bunch of scaling/layering issues. All of those many elements can lead to some messiness.

but, the explosions in the OT literally are the most realistic possible explosions ? because they’re real ??
They’re the most realistic small explosions of models filmed in an atmosphere with gravity, sure.
Explosions don’t happen in vacuums, though, so I guess a good edit would just erase all of them.
I understand what you mean, though.

To be fair there are bombs falling in space in The Last Jedi
The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.
I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.
I wasn’t arguing that star wars should be realistic… I was being sassy
Nah, I think the original looks great.
Either way, I love me some practical explosions over the CGI explosions in the ST.
To be honest, I prefer the CGI explosions, 'cause they look much more modern and realistic compared to the OT.
I mean, there are a lot of explosions in the OT and the ST. Some are better/more “realistic” than others. Not all the ST explosions are CGI anyway. But if we’re talking about space explosions, I think I have to personally go with the OT, though there are ways in which the ST ones are better. Anyway, this is a weird discussion (especially for this thread).
There are two very different kinds of explosion effect in the OT. Where they’ve blown up a miniature it’s great. Where they’ve merely match cut to a firework going off it’s hardly more “realistic” than a CG one. The latter can still work fine (they used it for the Death Stars after all) but in some cases the mismatch between the miniature and the firework is jarring.

There is artificial gravity within the bomber that propels objects with a downward force. Once the bombs exit the ship and enter zero gravity, the momentum created by that downward force is enough to propel them toward the Dreadnought below them. Yes, Star Wars is not the movie for you if you like hard science, but of all the physics-bending things you could point out in the franchise, this is one of the things that actually makes sense.

Yeah exactly, which is what I mean when I say in some ways they aren’t better, though in other ways they are, like the fact that they’re actual photographed explosions.
Even still you can’t quite delineate between a miniature exploding and a match cut to an explosion. The DSII for instance is the latter but it’s one of the best in the series because they lit up the miniature for the shot before it cuts to the explosion, so you have a relatively seamless combination of the two elements.
Speaking of, to put us back on topic, has ady said if he’ll be keeping the praxis wave for the explosion? It’s the one added praxis ring that I think actually adds a little something to the effect and energy of the shot (with the Falcon outrunning it being one last thrill). One of the only SE additions I miss a little when I watch the OOT.
Adding debris and wreckage from ships would vastly improve the explosions.
I am not sure if anybody has pointed this out yet, but there is a moment in the Vader and Luke battle in Return Of The Jedi where their lightsabers did not really clash.

It’s ok, according to replies I’ve gotten on Twitter, the guy who made the praxis wave hates the praxis wave. Lucas apparently got the idea while working on RotJ, and liked it so much he made this guy go back to ANH and add them there as one of the last changes before release.

Well, the praxis wave is so dated by now that it’s sort of a classic…
I feel like the wave makes the DS explosions a unique from all the others and makes them feel genuinely momentous in scale.

Agreed. It makes them feel important and unnatural.

I feel like the explosion could definitely be updated but I don’t know about the waves in my opinion. Maybe if they were redone they would work?
I’m just saying the one in ROTJ in particular. Look at it and what it adds to the excitement of that shot. It’s good, sorry.
I can understand what the praxis wave adds to ANH, with the soundtrack mirroring its visual oomph. I’ve never felt that way about ROTJ’s.
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.
Disagree strongly. The praxis in ANH totally ruins the effect and the sound wave takes away from the delightful twinkling score. It’s just an added distraction.
They all suck.
Not saying I’m a fan, just that I can appreciate ANH’s but not ROTJ’s.
(I included ANH’s in my project mostly because I didn’t want it to feel at all jarring after going 100% with the SE battle up to that point.)

I’m a dirty praxis effect apologist. Honestly I think that without the praxis ring, the explosions look pretty obviously like miniature effects. I don’t think that’s inherently a bad thing but the sense of scale isn’t really there.
I’d change them to be more in-line with the explosions in the sequel trilogy.

If we’re gonna change the explosions, great, I’m all for it. The original DS pops like a little balloon full of glitter…
But the rings add nothing. The original explosions are still right there and the rings ruin music, sounds, moods n’ moments.
