Wow, this is excellent. How much work did this take? Are you planning to tackle any other shots or is this just a proof of concept for Adywan to follow up on?

Also, is it stated in the movies (OT) that the Empire is drafting people? I kinda figured it was indoctrination and the lure of the darkside.

BIGGS: I know it’s a long shot, but if I don’t find them I’ll do what I can on my own… It’s what we always talked about. Luke, I’m not going to wait for the Empire to draft me into service. The Rebellion is spreading and I want to be on the right side – the side I believe in.

LUKE: Well, I’ll be at the Academy next season… after that who knows. I won’t be drafted into the Imperial Starfleet that’s for sure… Take care of yourself, you’ll always be the best friend I’ve got.

As an aside, this convo with Luke completely dispels the EU misconception that Luke was joining an Imperial Academy. Why would Biggs and Luke be worried about being drafted into the Empire if they were already signing up? On the contrary, it points to the Academy either being part of a local municipality or the equivalent of a trucker school. Just one of those things that the EU got wrong that has always bugged me.
it’s quite possible that being drafted often makes you a stormtrooper, enlisting into the navy could offer the oppritunity to be a pilot, officer, technician, etc

I’m also wondering how we all feel about deleting the line “It is too late for me, son.”

Personally I love that line, a great bit of voice acting and really adds depth to Vaders character. Makes him seem real rather than just a cut and paste bad guy. I remember seeing it at the cinema on first release and thinking, wow maybe, just maybe Luke can get through to his Dad.

It’s just a test, it might give Adywan some ideas. Or I might apply the effect on some actual shots if someone would like to use it in an edit. It took some time to figure out the best settings and tweak the depth map (which is the magic ingredient) but now that I have the basics set up it would take less time to adapt the effect for other shots.

Agreed. It isn’t telegraphing his later turn or creating some kind of illogicality. I think it’s one of his most important lines, in terms of the insight we get into his character.

Ady, if you mess with this one, we riot.

OK, I hate to be a pain with constant posting of more problems but I’ve just been re-watching the Space Battle of Endor a few times and I’ve come up with a wonderfully unrealistic wish list of fixes.

The effects suffer from bad lighting and color shifts due to the way they were composed.
On top of that you have a terrible BlueRay grading that makes everything flat. Look at the original trailer.
The space scenes are much darker and look immediately better: https://youtu.be/p4vIFhk621Q?t=102

I think that the only thing fixable is grading. 1983 effects are what they are…

“So, wouldn’t he then try to get his son to choose a different way?”

Because the Emperor wanted to kill him as soon as he realized who he was until Vader suggest to turn him over instead.

Yeah, I like the line too. It’s the first crack we see in Vader’s resolve, furthered by his stare at the gantry window. I was kind of spitballing, as a lot of us seem to be torn about some of the dialogue choices in ROTJ. I saw that line appear on a few cut lists and was curious about where we stood on it. I’m glad we’re in favor of keeping it!

The Luke/Vader stuff doesn’t really need any dialogue trims.

I’ll agree that we don’t need to trim that particular line, but I do think that some of the Luke/Vader dialogue needs to be trimmed or altered. Vader repeating the line “You don’t know the power of the dark side” from ESB is lazy and doesn’t give us or Luke any new information, it’s an empty taunt at that point. “I must obey my master,” I’d argue, is a line that telegraphs Vader’s turn at the end in a more on-the-nose way than the “too late for me” line, and I think I’d be okay with its excision.

I’ve been experimenting with trimming “I must obey my master!” while also incorporating Sir Ridley’s “Your mother once thought as you do” (albeit slowed-down). What prevented me from deleting “You don’t know the power of the Dark Side” was both Vader’s turn and making sure that Luke’s follow-up line made sense. The edit is a bit rough, but I’m sure Ady can do better working in the 5.1 mix.

Here it is.

That ain’t bad at all.

PM me for links to my edits; apparently, some feel shy about this.

Adding a “but” would make it flow better if possible.

Vader:
“Your mother once thought as you do, BUT you don’t know the power of the Dark Side.”

Luke:
“I will never turn…”

WOW! That works incredibly well. I was thinking it would be cheesy, but that is near flawless. I hope Adywan looks at this and ultimately decides to use this or do his own. I’m not big on OT changes but this works well as is.

Wrong thread.

Myself, the boy, two droids, and no questions asked.

I’ve given it a tweak, using the normal speed “once thought as you do” and adding a pause between the two parts. I don’t think I like it as much. While adding a “but” between the two lines would work, I couldn’t find a clean enough clip of Jones saying it as Vader.

Here’s the new one. Again, I’m sure Adywan or another sound editor could make it sound cleaner and better edit the music around eliminating “I must obey my master!”

The “your” and “mother” especially both sound clipped. Some reverb should help.

Your right, the first clip is better.
But thanks for putting in the time to try to improve on it.

I don’t understand why there’s no entertainment for the Emperor. No personal symphony, no bubble opera… Clearly the fight provides it. But before then, that room looks boring for an Emperor.

On that clip (the first one), drop the pitch of the “er” in “Mother” and “Do”. Also try and stretch “Do”, adding a fade out after adding reverb.

Some people call them Force Ghosts. I call them Midichlorian Swarms.

I’m trying to handle some of it, but I keep running into it sounding unnatural when I try to separate the different parts of Sir Ridley’s clip. Here’s one that incorporates the reverb and some additional fading/other items.

Streamable

I’m not a big audio editor, so I suspect that it still sounds rough. It’s doable and a more talented editor can find better clips/equalization/reverb effects to make it work. I would suggest finding a clip where James Earl Jones says a drawn-out “mother” (probably from his Bible audiobook). One of the more audio-minded people here could really make this idea a reality for Adywan’s edit.

The flow of the sentence sounds about perfect now. His voice is a little gravely when he says “your Mother”. Great work!

I looked around a while back when I first suggested this. I watched Lion King & Coming to America just to see if I could find him saying “your mother”, but no luck. I do recall finding a clip of him saying “Mother F***er”, but I don’t recall now where that was.
