Honestly, I never noticed the ever shifting TIE colors.
Then again, I never knew Threepio had one silver leg until I saw the Special Edition in theaters, because the VHS tapes I grew up with had somewhat muted colors.

Look, you've completely misread my posts if you think I'm "taking jabs" at Adywan. I am not criticizing him as a person, attacking him, making personal attacks, threats, or insults.
We all love Adywan and what he's doing, so please don't get over-excited and think you need to defend his honor as if he's been "trolled."
I'm the LAST person you could accuse of "trolling." All of my posts have been on topic, and designed to express my opinion, and argue for features that I feel would contribute to making this the best fan edit of ESB, ever. Trolling is posting hit and run to deliberately anger people, and that's something I've never done on these forums.
Adywan isn't going to quit the project, have a nervous breakdown and freak out, just because somebody criticized one of his decisions. He's got THICK SKIN, man. He's NOT the type of guy who is going to cry and quit the project because somebody argued with him on some point. He's not George Lucas, he is capable of changing his mind (and for a logical reason), too!
And it's his time to "waste." ESB:R isn't coming out for another year, so I highly doubt his spending even a few whole DAYS (nevermind hours) on here arguing with me (or anyone else) is going to significantly impact the project's release date. I argue because I care how this project turns out. If I thought he was just some jerk and his project sucked, I wouldn't even bother commenting. So give us "critics" some credit.

And he hasn't really made it perfectly clear, and has admitted as much since his responses were made when he was really tired. I thought the reason was originally because the colors were inconsistent in the same movie, then it was because they were inconsistent from ANH. Now he's saying he just always hated the idea of blue TIE fighters, and wants to change the movie to match how he wants the films to look, not how they were before Lucas screwed them up.
Adywan, from the start has made this a public project, so he can and will explain himself on here. It's not our job to just say "yessuh massah" every time he makes a decision. This is a free forum, and we can speak our minds, so long as we follow the forum rules. If he doesn't want to agree with criticisms, that's cool. If he wants to ignore feedback, that's cool too. But please don't pretend that we can't say something, because "he's made up his mind!"
If this were some long, back and forth flame war, I could see what you're saying, but this is entirely civil. Nobody is getting upset (at least not on this end).
The TIEs look cooler blue, they're consistent, provides some much needed variety, and it wouldn't take that much more work (than Ady has already done) to keep them that way in ESB:R. It's also nostalgic for those of us who had the models, comics, etc. where there were blue AND gray TIEs, not just gray.
If he sticks to gray, this just means there will be a desire to change them once he releases his project... and you'll have two editions of ESB:R out. People might tell me "oh well if you care so much, make your own" but that is just saying I take Adywan's project and color the TIEs blue, because that's all I'd change at this point. And then somebody can make their green lasers version, and so forth... won't that be great? ;)

ANH:R has grey TIEs so suddenly jumping to having all blue TIEs really doesn't fit with continuity with my edit. The whole bollox explanation that the Death Star TIEs were a different squadron so were white/ grey is just more EU bullshit to explain an error. If that's the case then why did ILM add the CG TIEs for the SE as blue/grey ones? That totally screwed up that theory.
As you can see, i was talking about the CG TIEs added to ANH for the SE. They used a blue/grey CG model which threw the theory of the fact they were white/grey as being that they were the Death Star Squadron.
Now the main reason, apart from that i just don't like the TIEs such an over saturated blue is this: They have all been recoloured in post production. Being an artist this is something i just cannot stand. An object should ahve many degrees of light and shade and highlighting. When recolouring an object you lose the light tones of highlights and it becomes a block colour. This existed ever since ESB was released in 1980 and nothing to do with the latest 2004 screw up. Even the black panels have become blue, which is down to the colour enhancement. Something like this jumps out to me and i just can't overlook it. It pulls me right out of the movie. You can tell the ones that haven't had any sort of colour filter added and they are grey and have white highlights when next to them is a blue one and the highlights which should be almost colourless is blue. For the AVCHD restoration it was easy to restore the colour to blue because of the techniques used originally. If i were to try and keep the blue to a degree that i would be happy with i would have to mask every single area for highlights, panels, cockpit etc. Here's a quick diagram to show what i mean:
Now the yellow areas are the mask for the black panels. Each section has to be done separately with a separate mask. The red areas are the highlights. Again each area is a separate mask. The green is the cockpit window to turn it back to grey. Now after i done the masks and applied the correct colouring/ highlighting to them each point then has to be matched, frame by frame, to the motion of the TIE fighter. All this has to be done by hand. Now when you have one TIE this can take days to do one split second shot. That photo has about 18 separate masks. Each point of that mask has to be moved to match the next frame. Thats could be anything in the region of 100+ points that have to be keyframed and moved to match the origin point for every frame. For one TIE alone thats insanity. Now add the other TIEs and every shot in the film and it becomes even more of a nightmare, and something i am not willing to do. It would take me so long just restoring these colours could take me the next year alone. I know i am too much of a perfectionist, which can sometimes be my downfall, but that's just the way i am. If they had stuck to the original colouring when doing ESB then i wouldn't have any problem whatsoever with the TIES being blue, but the fake colouring i just cannot stand, and never will. Now the TIE bombers are a different matter. They didn't have anything done to their colouring . Now strange enough they didn't mess with the colouring for ROTJ and the TIEs are a light blue/grey. Highlighting is intact and the panels are black.
Now what i am going to do is this: All the TIE fighters will be grey. TIE bombers will be their original light blue/ grey and the TIE interceptors will be their original colouring also. This will keep the consistency with the colours of the TIEs throughout the saga and also give the newer models of the bombers and interceptors their own colouring. the interceptors are a newer and more advanced TIE fighter so having a different colour , i have no problem with. If ILM had done the same to the bombers and the interceptors as they did with the TIEs in ESB then they would probably be grey also.
Its just soemthing, that to my eyes, that i spot straight away and hate it. Its the same with recolouring old black and white movies. It always looks fake to me and i just can never watch anything recoloured. Some movies, however, use recolouring for style and this can work. But not when you are trying to recolour an object because its just a new techique you can do, whcih is what happened with ESB

Once he's made an absolute, final, no-going-back decision, have the good grace to SHUT UP about it. You're not required to like everything he does, but IT'S HIS PROJECT, NOT YOURS. The weird thing is that they've been off Hoth for a long time at this point. And it only appears in the one frame, as far as I know, so maybe it was some sort of wacky ILM joke. I dunno, looks pretty obvious to me.
Makes me wonder about the grain of sand now...

So anyway, Adywan is now saying that ILM didn't do a good enough job with the coloring, because they tinted them more blue in post... and since it's too hard to "fix" it to his satisfaction, he's changing them back to the original, unintended color.

The thing is that most of the changes you're making to these films are so subtle, nobody is going to notice them... only the other "editors" and folks who go frame by frame, or use zoom and slo mo to analyze and compare. However if you take something like this that is subtle to begin with to 99% of viewers, and change it's color, it becomes something that now smacks you in the face. People won't be able to avoid it... that the TIEs are all gray.
But anyway, you'll be setting it up for the next editor to re-color the TIEs blue to their satisfaction. Then everyone will be happy...

Adywan, while I may be young and have little to add to this project. I sincerely want to thank you for doing this for both yourself and for us. Without romantisizing your character too much let me just say you truly are a breath of fresh air to the fan community. Thank you so much. Your commitment to the project through family struggles is also very generous of you.

OK, Adywan basically made a comparison between his AVCHD version and the GOUT for color comparison. Then he posted that he didn't like the blue TIEs and will change them for Revisited, but not for the AVCHD. That's what sparked the debate. I decided to take his AVCHD preview and recolor that as my impression of what the final version will look like.

I recently stumbled upon the Revisited version of SW after becoming obsessed with finding a fan edit of the prequels. (I found a terrific version by Slumberland, but I degress.)
I've gone through all the posts so I hope I'm not making requests already made or planned. There are a lot of pages here and I may have missed something.
Anyhow, my only two requests for ESB: 1.) On Hoth there is a shot of one of the walkers falling to the ground and blowing up. In the background there is another walker and it's head is the only thing that moves. I'd like to see have a little more movement or be removed as it's quite distracting. 2.) In Cloud City there is a low angle shot in the SE where the newly added orange sky is coming through windows and is relfected on the floor. It looks terrible. If at all possible it would be nice to see this fixed.
Like DarthRayne, and I'm sure many others here, I greatly appreciated what Adywan has done with ANH. It's the best version of the film to date.
Finally, I know RotJ is planned next. Adywan has mentioned he thinks it will take more work than ANH. Any word on what changes are being planned? (I know it's a bit early.) Is there a thread I missed that goes delves into this?

Welcome, welcome! Thanks for your suggestions. We had a discussion about the Cloud City shot you mentioned. I believe changes are definitely going to be made there, at the very least stop the reflection from going through the characters!

doubleofive - Very interesting to see that approximation of how the TIES might look in the Asteroid scene for the Empire Revisited edit.
And I totally agree, they will look GREAT. This is one colouration alteration that I am really looking forward to, as I really didn't like the more BLUE-looking ones that came after the Grey ones of A New Hope.
