Do the green screens need to be real studio green screens? Wouldn't painted cardboard work? :p

It's gotta be a special paint to make a real greenscreen, and it's not cheap...

Actually, I do remember hearing that somewhere before, now that I think of it. Thanks.

I know that borrowing things can be a sticky wicket (yub nub!), so it gets more understandable the more you think about it.

And the lightning has to be just right to remove the green around the model, or say welcome to unexpected results :P

Not true. Paint a wall a good lime green and you're good to go. it just has to be well lit.

Adywan,

I saw something on a project website some time ago which was basically a cheap way of achieving a tracking shot. Instead of a big set of tracks, you make a mini track and mini dolly, then mount it between two tripods. Don't know if that'll help with whatever you're planning. And never forget you can always move the set instead of the camera...

Also bear in mind that green screen isn't going to be easy to achieve without high-end camera equipment. As I found out to my cost, you really want to be capturing in 4:4:4 (i.e., pro equipment) for a good matte. DV was good enough for my purposes, and you might be alright if you're shooting in HD, because the subsampling will be compensated for by the increased number of pixels.

Yes! To Darth Editous you listen! ;)

I just think it's great that DE is aboard and willing to help with the skills he has acquired. I still marvel at his Gus removal! Haha. I try and recommend "Superman Redeemed" in just about every trade I do, and people are always taken aback by that scene in the junkyard.

Color doesn't matter, as long as the subject in front of the green/blue/orange/whatever screen has very little of that color in it.  Keying software can key out any color you want.

And Octorox is right, the background you're keying out needs to be lit as uniformly as possible.  Ideally it'd be exactly one color with no variations, but this probably isn't possible, so you'll just have to get as close to that as you can.

(We've been doing a lot of work with keying in my Motion Graphics II class, in case you were wondering where I'm getting my information.)

Of course, after all he is one of the guys that inspired me to start all this in the first place :)

Yes, i've been looking at getting the mini tracks and dolly as i just don't have the room for the full size ones, plus i don't really need the larger ones anyway. As for the green screen, i borrowed someone's mini green screen that they use for their photography to do a few tests with the 1080p HD canon camera and used FXHome Visionlab to do the chroma-keying and the results were great. I tried it with some ordinary green material i got from the local store and the results weren't so great.  i'll need a much larger screen to achieve the ship flybys for ESB:R though and for ROTJ with the new ships and the 6ft stardestroyer

Oh yeah, I know, lime green generally works better though because it's an uncommon color. unless your keying a lime that is, then I would recommend orange ;)

6FT Star Destroyer? Whoa!

You going to be borrowing this one or building it? I've seen some scratch built SDs around that size on the interwebz.

Can you not get away with shooting ships against black? It shouldn't be too hard to matte around the outline since you're not (I assume) going for any kind of ultra-stark lighting, and this will mean you can avoid any green glow from the cloth. Or are these fly-bys not in space? Sorry, I haven't caught up on the whole thread yet.

Oh, and keep your shutter speed at 1/50 ;)

If I may ask, what kinds of new shots are you doing that requires such massive models?

Lets see if i remember about props:

Ady needs: A new canyon Prop Set to replace the bad original composited one, during the chase with TIES.

A star destroyer (6ft?) or Only the bridge to replace the bad FX when the asteroid collides on it during the hologram scene.

A wampa arm/ model to make it more real ( i think).

A bespin shaft model to fix the curvature/ continuity problems.

A hangar prop of hoth to extend the depth and fix some bad/poor elements.

A Millenium falcon prop to replace several landed and fly bys poor shots.

A space slug mouth interior with pointy like stalagmites teeth to replace the old one.

? new rebel fleet props to replace the copy paste ones?

And my Thoughts about 3D adds.

Some poor shots with AT-ATs elements that cant stick on ground can be replaced with renders ( we saw examples with Vue)

A 3d cloud car fly by in one of the cloud city establishing shots to recreate the OT feel.

A 3d X wing for Luke's arrival to Bespin.

?3d animated rebel/imperial troops during the hoth battle running here and there ( like the you tube video)?

Millennium falcon's continuous flyby during Bespin approach (like in the menus and what Danves video mockup) with no brake to 2 shots.

Stalagmite teeth on the space slug? why...

It makes Leia look like a dumbass when she says "The cave is collapsing!!!!"

If Ady makes it look like a cave instead of the mouth that it is, it will make Leia less of a dummy.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I don't think there are even any Fan-Films out there that go this all out.
