I'm not speaking about myself, not yet anyway, but I have a question.

To be blunt, when will those of us who are not donating get a chance to see the clip? And also, how far do you intend to go with this "donate to watch" sceme?

I don't mean to be rude, I'm just bieng curious.

I will say that I have my own issues with "how far is too far" when dealing with these kinds of projects, my own included. I of course have only good will towards yours.

Well you obviously won't need to donate to watch the final version so I don't really mind if Ady throws in some hooks for donaters.

Don't think of it as "donate to watch", instead think of it as "donate and watch." All good charities give a little something to their doner; the doner doesn't give to recieve, but the gifts are a way that the beneficiary shows their appreciation.

Agreed. But as far as seeing it as "donate to watch", I have to. I have made a donation, and I was happy to do so. And I did so for the good of the project. But the fact is that there are those that may have given simply to see the clip, which I see as "donate to watch". And in the most basic sense, regardless of motives, it's a giving and receiving transaction with money involved. And the doner is passing copyrighted material (material owned by someone else) in the same tranaction as money. And I think it's a dangerous notion in this copyright & piracy issue climate we live in.

Debate and opinions aside, I would like to hear Adywan's take on this. I think this is a big deal and it should be clearly addressed.

For the record I have made my donation, and I have done so for the benefit of this project. And I am excited to enjoy some of the fruits of that by watching the new clip (which I have not recieved a link to yet).

So in saying that, I'm not speaking about myself, but I have a question.

well here is what i originally wrote

so i had an idea as a little incentive for anyone that was thinking of donating: anyone that donates between now and 14th may will get to view the completed trailer a week before its release date along with a brand new clip that will not be seen until the edit is released.

as you can see i stated that anyone thinking of donating and didn't intend this to be taken as anything like "donate to watch".  all i intended it to be was a little thank you and i did this with ANH:R but no one saw it that way last time. i'm not doing the edits for anything other than my love of doing these. But this one is costing me a fortune and i just would never be able to get this done without help because i am unemployed. all the donations go directly to the purchase of materials needed. i spend most of my day, every day working on this project and without help i would be working on this one until 2011 probably while i can get enough money to get the materials needed. everyone that donated knows that this doesn't mean that they will be sent a copy of the final movie and that has always been made clear because the final release will always be free. the problem is now that it has been made to look like people have been paying to see a clip when that was never the case and this could now get this project shut down when all it was intended for was a thank you

now the main reason i started giving people a chance to see a clip or trailer earlier if they donated was down to what hapened with the X0 project. many people donated towards that project and it just disappeared. i didn't want people to worry that if they donate then the project would just never happen in the end.

now i don't know why you haven't received the link to the clip because i have sent it to everyone who donated to the email address they donated through since i announced this.

DONATIONS TOWARDS MATERIALS FOR THE REVISITED SAGA

I donated so that Ady has the money to do the project the way he needs to.  I did not pay for, nor should anyone else, a clip.  The preview clip is a thank you for donating.  If you donate money you cannot afford to watch a clip that will be available for free later on, you're an idiot.

That said, I like the new clip.  Yoda looks pretty cool, good work with him.   Enlarging Obi-Wan does work, although I wonder if he'd he better off a little bit more in front of the nose of the ship, in that big empty spot.  That way he can be a bit smaller, too, if the resolution is a problem.  Also, when Obi-Wan appears the whole bog behind Yoda left lights up.  I'm not keen on that, but it's certainly not a deal-breaker.

When Cloud City is revealed, there is a pod car flying away from it towards us.  We then cut to the SE shot following a pod car flying through the city, almost giving a continuity problem as it feels as if they should be the same vehicle.  Fortunately the shot is a temp, and the city looks very good in the shot.

Keep going Ady.  Awesome work.

I would have donated but I am in the same boat as you ady. Whenever I make my first Science Fiction film I am gonna give you a call LOL you do amazing work and the sheer fact that you make and use models instead of relying soley on CGI(too much can be bad) makes them even better.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

The clip was terrrific, I just noticed in the cloud city fly thru there are 2 little antennas sticking up on the end of Leia's building (during the fly thru)  that are NOT seen on top of Leia's building when she is seen in the window.

Besides, you could still have the siren bit... <:)

That is a good idea ;)

If Ady likes this idea, I'm currently playing Jedi Outcast and there is a nice Klaxon noise as the Doomgiver falls apart.

no, i don't like the idea of adding a siren. the scene doesn't need it. he gave the announcement, which would have been heard city wide, so the need for a siren to signal the evacuation seems pointless.

hi - this is my first post on this amazing thread.

ady, this is outstanding work you're doing here, man!  anh:r totally blew me away.  i wasn't aware of it's existence until after you'd finished it and it was 'out there', so i missed all of the forum activity and debates in the run up to its release.  so pleased i'm seeing all this while you're still on with esb.

i'm going back a bit here to the 'adding a siren' idea - what if instead of a siren, there was a regular repeat of lando's spoken warning?  it could go out every now and then, just so anyone in the city that missed it the first time around would know why everyone else was leaving so quickly.. a siren going off would be meaningless to the people there if they'd maybe missed the inital anouncement for any reason.

it could be put subtley into the background sounds for one or two scenes following lando saying the line.  i think it would be conceivable that there would be an easy way to put an emergency anouncement like this on repeat for lando.

Well heres my 2Cents on the doanation thing, take whatever money you would have spent on LFL releases and dontate it to Ady... if he shares a clip with you then awesomesauce, otherise I think he's already proven himself  with the quailty of his work. I have in the past and will continue (donation sent) to donate to this project, Ady's earned whatever help he can get.

I do not see the big deal here. Donate if you want to. If you do not then don't. This is not rocket science.

I just logged in to PayPal, and noticed that there are different options for making the donation; is it okay if I donate in American dollars, or should I donate in Pounds to make it easier for you, Ady? And I should just use the Hotmail e-mail address you have listed in your signature as the "To" address, correct? I'm also planning on counting it as "Services/Other", unless you think it should be done differently.

I'm making tyhis a public post, as opposed to a PM, to clarify the process for anyone else who's making a donation, and doesn't know their way around PayPal all that well. :-)

Thanks,
Sojourn

I am dumb for donating at 8:00 pm in American, when it is like 2:00 am in the UK. I guess I will have to wait til morning. Looking forard to it.

Firstly, let me me address the clip issue. I was correct in stating, (at that time) that I had not yet received the clip. However, between then and now I was STILL under the impression that I had not received the link. I discovered that with my spam blocking bieng what it is,  it had infact ended up in my junk folder. So I did get it shortly after, I just didn't know it. I also received your PM Ady, so thank you on both counts.

Secondly, in regards to donations, I have nothing but respect for your project, your work on it, and all that it intails. This is also not the first time you have made donations an option, and I take no issue with it. I agree with your reasons and I think it would be foolish to assume you could accomplish a project of this nature without help, in all the ways that you have asked for help. I see nothing wrong with asking for donations (within reason), or offering clips (exclusive or otherwise), I do however think that combining the two is dangerous, for you, and this project. If someone wanted to make a case against a project like this, this would be one of the ways of doing so.

I greatly support and respect this project, so I speak bluntly, but I mean no offense. I just think you should cover your bases and be careful to a degree.

I understand what you're saying, but I think the difference here is that whatever he's giving to the donators will eventually be released to everyone, for free. It's not like he's giving away a special deleted scene, or an alternate edit of the project, or something like that, which contains copyrighted material not owned by him, that only the donators would get (which could lead to the argument that they were buying the footage). He's just showing it to the donators early. I've seen other fan projects do this before; Ryan Vs. Dorkman 2 is a notable and successful example.

Take care,

Right, but that's not my point. All of that is moot in a legal scenario. Accepting donations for a project involving copyrighted material of any kind whether we like the reasons or not is essentially illegal. That is the clear reality. Then the whole donation concept is taken a step further with a donation incentive, offering an "exclusive clip" to those who donate. In other words a clip in exchange for a donation. In other words money bieng accepted while copyrighted material is passed, whether it be 5 minutes or 2 hours makes no difference.

I'm on Adywan's side, but the lines of action have to be clear.

Again, Ady, I'm not trying to repay you for your work with a slap in the face. Quite opposite infact. But I think that my points are valid and should be kept in mind.

Now, getting back to the subject at hand, I thought that the clip was great. I love the new cloads. The only thing that took me out of the shot was a cut from the red ship flying towards the screen (away from cloud city) to a red ship flying around the city itself. But it all looks great.

Keep going Ady.  Awesome work.

I suggested earlier to just reverse the course of the cloud car so its heading away from us and towards the city, so that the next shot of the fly through is a sort of continuation of the previous shot.  Even if it isn't the same cloud car, visually it would flow better.

I loved the new clip! Yoda is full of life now, especially when he says, "You will become an agent of evil." I remember that the puppet's mouth movement was terribly unconvincing in the originals which "takes one out" of the fantasy and the suspension on the ordinary. The new mouth movement and expressions are subtle but powerful. Adywan is a great magician!

I do have a critique. When Ady enlarged Obi Wan so that he fits the size of Yoda in the scene there is a very noticeable loss of resolution. Two ways around this: return Obi Wan to original size and place some branches in front of him to show that he is some distance behind Yoda; or shrink Yoda a little so that he fits in with the original Obi Wan.

I loved the shot of Cloud City. The clouds really give dimension to the previously flat and obviously painted shot. The red sky car (I don't know what they are called) is a bit jarring though since it contrasts the beautiful sky scene with a very passionate red. I know some of the shots were temps and are still under construction. I hope my thoughts are somewhat useful.

I cry for being in debt and living on a budget, and my wife thinking I'm addicted to the OT boards anyway so asking for money would be bad for my life.

the main problem with having the cloud car flying towards the city is the we have 3 consecutive shots of a ship flying away from the camera. First Luke's X-wing which wipes to the shot of cloud city then straight into the fly-though scene with the cloud car. the middle shot really needs to be different or the repetitiveness is glaring. In the clip i did put that it was a temp shot and i always miss the original wipe shot with the cloud car (don't get me started on that refinery again. ;) lol). i have a few ideas about what to do with the shot but just need to do a few tests first.

Donation sent.  Did it in USD to make it even on my end.  BTW, what kinda % does paypal charge for this type of transfer.  I've only ever sent money through it.

Hey look, a bear!

^You may notice that Paypal's currency value is always lower than that of XE.com's, which I use as sort of "the" currency value...place. (for example, XE.com will say that the Canadian dollar is worth 82 cents US, but Paypal says it's worth 79 cents US...) I asked Paypal about it and they gave me one of those non-answer answers. I think it's highly unfair to undervalue my money and it seems like a way for them to make money, pure and simple. If anyone can explain it to me rationally, that would be great. Haha.

Rip - track the currency exchange rates over time.  PayPal could be using back-dated info - last exchange rate on prior business day/week, or within some other amount of time - so their exchange rate is what it was a few days ago rather than at the time of transaction.  I don't do a lot of foreign currency exchanges at all, let alone thru PP, but the ones I have done, that's been my experience.

They must be using really old ones, because the difference has been as high as 4 or 5 cents, despite it staying at the same amount for a week. :p Oh well.

Anyway, I'd love to donate and I may do so soon. Can't afford to send a lot, but I'm sure it all adds up and becomes a big help.
