While I am truly very impressed, I'm just curious, wouldn't CGI have been sufficient and easier for this sort of thing? Not trying to knock the cast, as it truly is amazing!

I'd imagine tracking a CG chest without it "hovering" above the original shot would be a nightmare. And an all-CG shot would stand out too much, I think.

For some strange reason, I heard George Lucas's voice in my head when I read this post.
Spoiler free for the ST
What is easiest is not always what is best....
Looks good!

That's my thinking as well. Why use a cartoon when you can use something real?
Great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great work! Very excited! Very very very.... you get the point...
;)
To add something to the discussion besides encouragement: I agree about physical models vs CG - why do CG when you can go real? Miniatures and models all the way baby! CG has it's uses for sure - but a model/real thing should be your first choice in film, in my opinion.
Someday CGI will be entirely photorealistic, but that's atleast 15 years away. So for now use models and miniatures, they really make the films come alive. It's the reason I'm so excited to see what Ady does for PT:R.
Believe me guys, I'm all about real models over CGI and I love that the new SW films will supposedly take that into account, but in this very project are AT-STs, and they happen to look very good. They also happen to be pure CGI. And while I agree that in many cases CGI doesn't quite look good enough, it seems a metal chest isn't particularly hard to create when compared to the other CGI capabilities Ady has demonstrated. Again, of course I prefer models. No need to be anti-CGI just on principle, when it is quite capable of many things. His reasons are his own, and either way, it looks pretty darn fantastic. If it's the way Adywan wanted it done, I'm cool with that. Just asking a reasonable question.

I think because the AT-ST's had to be in motion (which would necessitate motion control photography if Ady had made models), plus the fact they're fairly far away so you don't need so much realism, that's why it was more practical to go the CGI route.
Now Han in Carbonite is a completely static item, perhaps necessitating a motion track for certain shots and it's seen close up. Plus the CGI shirt would have to blend in with the real prop - easier to spot a fake in that instance I think.

I made an explanation post on the WordPress for those who don't understand why this is necessary:

THANKS for that dude

One of those things that just make you go: "Huh." I never knew it was the wrong shirt. Unbelievable job with the sculpture though, Adywan! Just AWESOME!
Absolutely fantastic Adywan, I'm sure the smell of that resin stunk the place out!
Can't wait to see it painted
Just uploaded some of my old mock-ups on to vimeo, I don't know if you've considered any of these ideas?
Just click the images:
1. The Blizzard outside the hanger doors:
2. The moving flaps on the Snowspeeders:
3. Han & Chewie reduced in scale on the Falcon:
4. The Walker's foot scaled up as it crushes Luke's Snowspeeder:
Thanks
John
1st of all, Adywan that new Carbonite cast is incredible! We want to watch your version SOOOOOOO bad but its little things like that that makes us know that it will be well worth the wait!
Jaitea, all are pretty dam cool, but I really like your The Blizzard outside the hanger doors!

Already added, including a new background for the outside
2. The moving flaps on the Snowspeeders:
I will be adding these. I'm going to build a model of the flaps, but if that doesn't pan out i will have to use CG for these
3. Han & Chewie reduced in scale on the Falcon:
I won't be doing this
4. The Walker's foot scaled up as it crushes Luke's Snowspeeder:
Hmm, well i was awaiting a certain person to work on this. lol
Thanks
John
I have to say the scaling seems to be a good idea (very subtle... maybe it could go a little further?) which makes as much sense as the shirt but it's your call.

Thank you for the reply. Makes sense. :)
No problem. Even though I wrote motion-control instead of stop-motion by accident :p

Motion control might have been helpful for some of the fly-by shots -- so it wasn't an out-of-the-question suggestion. :-)
Cool to hear AdY will be implementing some of your ideas Jaitea.
I actually have an in-universe explanation for the small scaling issue with the Falcon on Hoth...
It shrinks in the cold weather. ;)
This may have been dealt with, but will we see any red lasers come out of the side guns on the AT-ATs? There are times when the side guns move in reaction to the snowspeeders but nothing happens:

Ady will have a killer decoration regardless. He could have it on his wall and tell guests "I like Captain Solo where he is, hoo hoo hoo hooo!!"
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas
