I always thought Blu quality was still a good jump up picture wise from HDTV broadcasts.

It may be time to recreate the Admiral Ozzel Hat Resolution Comparison Image again. ;-)
That's actually the first thing I thought of when I read that he'll be working with another jump in resolution source. :)
There's no jump in resolution. The broadcasts were 1080p and so are the Blu-Rays, and as they're from the same master, they're practically identical (the blus do have slightly less compression of course but not by much).
I always thought Blu quality was still a good jump up picture wise from HDTV broadcasts.
That is usually true but the reason usually is that the HDTV Broadcasts are from an HD master made for DVD, whereas the BDs are an all new dedicated 4K or even 8K master. Which is of course not the case here.

ESB:R will be a mixture of HDTV and Blu-Ray sources, with the Blu-Ray being the main source for the edit. I'm just completing transferring the color correction to the Blu-Ray and then I'll be reapplying the FX work to the sections that are using the new source.
Which blu-ray source are you using, the internet rips, or the retail?

I'm using the retail.
An interesting teaser/side project could be a render of just the color correction/new elements with no actual film background. Like them against a white background? Could be interesting. *shrug*

And risk someone steals the new CG elements from the edit? Madness.
Watermark this edit quickly!
Nice idea tho. Pretty much a demo reel

Good point. I was thinking maybe seeing if some of the scenes could actually be recognizable just by the correction and new elements, new Cloud City windows might be fun to see floating in blank space.Angel said:

Not the whole film but a couple of scenes as bonus features like was done with the final battle for ANH:R.
My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Couldn't you have used the internet rips instead, it would have saved you the time it would have taken to rip the BD's to your hard drive and convert for editing in vegas, and you have done so much work with the HDTV source already?
Was hoping you would stick with the HDTV source, and even though the BD's are better in quality, once they are reduced to 720p, they are not going to look much different from the mkv files you have already posted.
Personally I'm not going to worry about the BD's till this edit is ready, and then when it's time, I will just get one ( empire for empire ), and it will stay in the box un opened, out of site, and forgotten.....

Why risk compression artifacts from internet sources when he probably just let the retail disc rip overnight? Besides, since we go by the spirit of the law around here, leaked copies are illegal, retail copies are questionable.AuggieBenDoggie said:

Never notice any compression artifacts on the MKV samples from the rips that I have already seen. And ripped copes ( as well as fan edits ) are just as illegal, it's just that lucas (to our advantage ) doesn't really pursue it for starwars.

Why do you care so much?
Let the retail Disc rip over night? it surely does not take that long to rip a BD LOL, 30-40 minutes tops.

Why? Read between the lines ;)

It takes longer than that.

Pretty sure the rules state that you have to own the retail copy to own the edit, not "download the same version from the same place the editor did."AuggieBenDoggie said:

I know what the rules say, thats why I will eventually get them, when this edit is done, but in reference to Ady, he could have always had both the retail and rips, and use the rips for the edit to save time, just my opinion though. Ady can do what ever he wants.

Well obviously Ady has decided the blu-rays are the best source for his HD edit, so there's not much point having an ongoing debate about it. For one, the original HDTV broadcasts were NOT 1080p, they were 1080i, and although some people will argue that, I work for the broadcaster that showed them, and there are NO 1080p broadcasts. Either way the blu-rays are very good, clean transfers for the most part and I think Ady is doing the right thing.
Aside from a slight difference in the way colour is processed, 1080p wraps just fine in 1080i - it's not like it has half the resolution because it's i.

You're right, I was just clarifying as people seem to believe the broadcasts were 1080p, which isn't the case. No biggie.
How long would it take to download a 1080p rip anyway? I think I'll settle for 720p.
Well at least Ady is doing his upmost to ensure his edit will be at the highest quality available
