Yes, the TESB AT-ST is different, and cooler in my opinion, than the ROTJ version.  In 1980, Kenner thought the vehicle was cool enough to release a toy of it with their TESB line, even though it had such limited screen time.  The more I think about the removal of it from the film, the more I don't like it.

It takes balls to remove something like that from a film like ESB because it can't be made to work so if it did happen I'd put it down to Ady's quest for perfection in his projects.

I'd rather watch an ESB:R that he was happy with than one he was almost happy with but felt compelled to keep bits in that no longer fitted to keep old gits like me happy.

I can see the ESB AT-ST in all it's two shots of glory in the restored theatrical version Ady did if I did get dewy eyed but it would be a joy to see it in there somewhere if it could be made to work.

Speaking as a fellow "old git", I agree! :-)  I think Adywan's versions should favour modern effects.  If I want the original effects, there are other versions of the films I can watch.

In all honesty, I always thought the AT-ST looked a little out of place on Hoth.  Maybe it's because I was so used to it on Endor.  But like you guys said, it's not in there nearly long enough to make any real difference.

Besides, Ady's special effects are amazing.  I absolutely love ANH:R.  I've seen it so many times already and I don't think I'd be able to watch and enjoy my dvd version without all of his edits.  My only gripe with the entire movie was the outdated look of the death star.  It's the only area of the movie that could have used some growth, especially since the Empire was supposed to be more high-tech than the alliance.  But the SSD in ESB already looks so cool that those kinds of changes wouldn't be necessary.

The problem without the scout walkers is that they appear for two shots and disappear in the next. The one that passes by Luke should be seen in the next shot of his POV of the walker he just blew up. For continuity's sake, it's better to have none than two disappearing ones in my opinion.

The De Agostini guide to Star Wars vehicles I think tries to make the claim that the Hoth AT-ST looks different because it's been "modified for cold weather."  This doesn't really explain the legs, nor how they managed to modify it in such record time...

I always liked the AT-ST shots. Gave me something to "look for" during the battle, but I understand if Ady doesn't want to include them.

I remembered some nice old YouTube renders of AT-ST and AT-AT on Hoth:

AT-ST Hoth

AT-ATs

Would the CGI look fake if it was farther away in the background? Plus, they're old renders (at least the first), I suppose newer 3D renders could have a better and more realistic lighting.

Oh, this was nice too:

Snowtroopers fixed

EDIT: Sorry, should be fixed now.

The AT-AT link and Snowtrooper link appear to go to the same video.

In any case, I think this video has the best AT-ST ever put on film.

Here's an idea. Why don't we just move the first shot of the ATST from earlier in the battle to the end? Like at the point where you see the rebel ground troops fleeing just before Luke destroys that single AT-AT by himself. You can establish the ATST somewhere during the rebels retreat, and after Luke destroys the AT-AT, you see it again.

Ady, I think this will come in very handy as reference to animating models.

Ah, sorry to add to the youtube madness, but I couldn't let this pass without showing it's full glory for anyone that missed this.  Gotta love the Jabba moment -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA7a0ME-_wo

Not a bad idea there Jeyl, although I'm used to seeing that particular 'close-up' of the AT-AT firing before we cut to General Veers.  Like others, I'll miss the brief AT-ST shots, but am sure that adywan's other tweaks during the battle will more than make up for it.

I'll be honest I loved the teaser trailer from all those moons ago when there was a ton of AT-AT's coming over the horizon. and would really love it if this change was put back in as it really shows just how screwed the rebels are.

that and green lasers ;-P

(don't hurt me!)

That's not the original. Someone else downloaded Boivin's and re-uploaded it. Support the artist who made it and link to HIS upload.

Isnt this guy work for ady already?

I concur! The lightning in the battle changes so often. Yes in some points some renders can do the justice removing the set/model feeling and open the landscape. A scene i recall right now is when the at at'd head explode and its ready to fall. There is a gloomy landscape that doesnt match with the previous ones as well the tiny at at in the back doing an akward movenent and is affected by the shadow of the front walker while falling..

Well im sure these are fixed/enhanced. Im more curious for the mattes behind and continuity :D

Well, now they'll use it for sure.

George will say he thought of it 30 years ago.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas
