I never liked this shot:

It's obvious that balcony used to be a closed wall because why would they leave an open entrance into cloud city from outside. Doesn't it rain on cloud city? PErhaps this could be changed to look more convincing.

Have you ever been to italy. Their are balcony's like that everywhere. They don't really care if it rains or not. Plus a gas planet wouldnt necessarily rain. and even if it did cloud city is among the clouds not under them. And another thing they could always have shields or coverings to keep rain out.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

And it's dark on purpose. It would look very different if it was lit like the rest of Cloud City, but it was part of Vader's luring Luke in. Darkness, shadows, etc...

and the effect worked. it would be very hard to be sneaky in a well lit up beautiful place in a black costume.

i understand wat janskeet is getting at, i've always found them to be weird also, because it looks like nobody ever goes down there. of course, cloud city was being evacuated, but seriously, why worry about turning off the lights when u hear the empire's taking control of the city.

I don't like these sets. They look cool but there is no logic to them. It looks like George Lucas was torn between making a set that is the interior of the death star or the interior of cloud city. I don't understand the logic of this set at all. I've seen some Fan fiction and star wars books that show the analogy of these sets, but I'm not buying them.

This one looks too much like the window in ROTJ. Is there suppose to be some symbolism between this window and the ROTJ throne room window or is this just a case of George Lucas over indulging in his obsessive compulsions?

And...

Added to the Ignore list.  This is all nonsense.

Uh... can you explain what you mean by "there is no logic" to these sets?  What, exactly, is illogical about them?

Also, you might want to verify the definition of "analogy".

I must point out that the only similarity these two windows share is that they're round:

Well, they're not exactly the same, but they are close enough. When I see the ESB window I think of the ROTJ window. I thought there was suppose to be some symbolism to that. I don't like to think that the window in ESB is just some random window.

Somebody pm Sluggo to give me a second chance?

Reminds me of a Tie Fighter's front window too, I love the web like theme.

And that is why I think it doesn't belong in cloud city. It looks too empirish. I am kind of suggesting Adywan to change that window, but to what, I'm not sure.

No need too, just because there are some similarities doesn't mean get rid of all of them.

I really don't think this is the kind of thing ady would bother changing, especially when there's nothing inherently wrong with the scene in question.

Changing something just for the sake of changing it is not something that the Revisited edits are known for.

I like the window behind the Emperor. Like a spider in the center of its web.

Be constructive then ;)

Consider that the window is braking by Vader so if you have an idea to change it find a way to do it and being realistic.

I like some of your ideas but at least make a mockup whatever it looks like to show and point others to a direction.

Please resize the images at least to 600 px when are only snapshots :)

If you dont like something please make some concepts of how can be done or improved :)

I was thinking maybe the window could be changed to something like this:

I figured it would help lighten the mood a bit in an otherwise dark moment in the movie.

I had thought the same thing over the years... I wonder if this was done intentionally?  At any rate, a great metaphor.

Oh then you should know. I thought that shot looked better than ever.

It does as I indicated in my posting but those observations are still true even in Ady's greatly improved version.

The far wall still looks like an interior wall and not really like an exterior one and there isn't much (other than tinkering with it's reflective properties) that can be done about it.

It was designed to be inside and in the SE it was turned into an exterior wall, Lucas's first attempt had the silly low railing and the see through shadows (which Ady has skillfully fixed) but it also reflected the tint on the far wall which Ady's version doesn't do so much (sure the sky is different and much better) but perhaps a little tweak would turn an already better version into an even better one.

But there is only so much that can be done with the set as it originally was.

I say so what if it leads to an interior wall. Who's to say it can't be designed that way in Cloud City?

You still seem to misunderstand me.

The wall looks like it's inside a building, partly because it resembles more the interior architecture of the place more than the exterior (a throw back to the fact it was initially designed that way, which would be almost impossible to rectify) but to some extent because of the interaction between the outside environment (the light intensity and colour of the sky line, which is possible to rectify if Ady wants to).

A white semi glossy surface would reflect back more of the colour and light of the surrounding environment than an interior wall would because it is closer to the exterior elements.

Ady has already done a lot of work on that scene and he would be well within his rights to say enough is enough and I'm happy with that if that is the case.

As for the sets around the pit I have no problem with them, they look great and they belong to a different kind of area to the rest of the city.

If you were to go to a power plant near Florence I'm sure the interior architecture would be very different from civic buildings (even new ones).

It's an industrial area (much like the freezing chamber) so it's bound to look different (the curves of the vanes however do carry some of the design ethic of the upper levels down to the lower areas but that may be just as much functional as aesthetic).

okay, i just typed everything that bingo just did, then read his post, so in he interest of saving space ill just agree with everything he said.

i have rectangular windows (UK) i should imagine vaderios does (GRE) and so do all the other memebers on the board. not exactly a statement on our cultural differences/similariites.

i see the deathstariness of the interior just shows that its practical and not pretty.

the only style of window it should be changed to is corellians version.;)

Probably they liked the idea the crew of ROTJ and they just copy paste it from ESB. Rush yes rush :P

Yeah and when the glass is braking a drop of blood will fall over luke's saber. Hi watchmen :)

The Millenium Falcon has the same sort of window for the cockpit. It would seem that those sorts of round spider-web frame windows are a very popular design trend in their society. Maybe they all just want to be cool. I want one in my house.
