That is really beautiful. o_o I cannot wait until we see the moving clouds, hopefully in the trailer. *is excited*
For me, I prefer the blue skies, even though I understand where you're coming from. The blue skies over Cloud City just feel good to me (this is kind of difficult to explain). It has that element of the familiar, while still being foreign and futuristic. Changing all the shots from a blue sky to yellow or another shade doesn't give me this same feeling. Cloud City has always been light and airy, and I think the bright white clouds and blue sky convey this feeling perfectly. Changing to darker clouds and an alien looking sky throw that off for me. The "city floating in clouds" is alien enough for me that changing the planet's atmosphere completely isn't necessary.
On the same note, I also prefer grey sunglasses to amber. The extra yellow added to my field of view just doesn't feel right to me, while the darker grey or simple light reduction feels right. Not the same thing as changing a shot in a movie, but maybe that helps you see where I'm coming from.
Just my two cents.
O.T. or No T., baby!™
with all the talk of the skies when Luke approaches Bespin i thought it would be best if i posted a screenshot of my version. Again this shot has full video motion clouds so you can't really get a sense of what the finished shot will be like until you see it in motion, plus the x-wing is missing

Bespin look less like a painting in that shot than in the other screen shot and the clouds look awsome as does the sun light.
Any ideal how long the trailer will be, just how much footage you going to treat us to Adywan.

i haven't a clue at the moment. i'm pretty worried that i haven't got enough finished footage for the trailer so i'm just going to be working on the shots i need until the 21st
Beautiful shot.
I would just add the x-wing and leave as-is
adywan said:the rebel transport and two x-wings escape from the planet, head directly towards a stardestroyer that just sits there and practically waits to get blasted so the rebels can escape. Now , adding a few lasers coming from the stardestroyer and having one of the xwings destroyed makes perfect sense and boosts the peril that the rebels are in. it isn't "focus distracting" as you say because there was no single focus in that scene.
Well, I guess it all boils down to one's interpretation on 'why' the Star Destroyer was just standing there in the first place. When the commander is informed that the rebel ships are trying to escape, he didn't say "Arm the turbo lasers and prepare to destroy them!", he said "Good, our first catch of the day". And since the Star Destroyer wasn't shooting at them, it's a pretty logical conclusion that they were planning on capturing the ships with their tractor beams. Kind of like how the Star Destroyer at the end of the movie wasn't firing on the Falcon when it was getting it's Tractor Beam ready.
And I think billing that effects sequence as having "no single focus in that scene" is disingenuous. I cannot contemplate the folks over at ILM saying "We're making an effect shot with no focus point". I don't know any FX team that has ever made a visual effects shot that didn't have a focus point. The new Battlestar Galactica, with all it's camera shakes and random zooms even have a focus point to follow. And during the Rebel Escape, there is a single focus point in the sequence. The three shots that involve the Ion Blasts. You follow them from being shot out of the canon to hitting the star destroyer consecutively. Adding in laser shots, the X-Wing blowing up and more sound effects to be used with the new effects definitely distracts the viewer from the Ion Blasts which are the focus point. It's the same reason you gave about the Falcon display. If it isn't distracting you then you aren't looking at it proves it doesn't need to be there in the first place. Well, it's hard to keep focus on the Ion Blasts when an X-Wing explodes out of nowhere in the middle of a laser barrage.
I can understand how you don't find it distracting, but you're the editor. You know the sequence like the back of your hand. I on the other hand am the viewer who doesn't know the sequence like you do and I see it differently. I see a sequence that loses it's focus point by burying it in extra sound and visual effects that weren't there to begin with. Because originally, the focus was on the Ion Blasts.
And for adding more "peril" into the sequence, I don't think it needs it. The real peril should start where it did all along. During the ground battle where things go down hill from shot one of the AT-ATs. It's a structure thing. :)
Nice work on the new Cloud City shot, but you think you can gray out the front clouds a little bit? It looks like the front cloud layer is getting more light than the clouds that are in front of the sun. It's almost like it's getting light from a different sun altogether that isn't setting.
So, does that mean it will be footage we have not seen at all yet ?

Nice! Damn nice!
Reminds Sarah Connor saying: A storm is Coming!
Ady: Next time wait until the next week for a promo pic ;) Don't spoil everything :D

thats really cool. the whole composition works great as the clouds seem to be surrounding everything and feels sort of claustrophobic!
this film is going to be unbelievable!
Wow! An early preview....and the shot looks simply stunning, Adywan! And that's even without the X-Wing in place yet.
The final colouration overall has turned out even better than I'd hoped. Another success.

well almost all the footage i've shown so far has had some form tweaking or completely redone since they were released so there will be a difference in the existing footage. It's just that i have some specific footage i want for the trailer and i haven't begun work on those shots just yet

this is something that has always bugged me about bespin. does it have 1 or 2 suns? look at the scene where the falcon first approaches cloud city. first the sun is behind/ to the left of them then its in front of them but the 2 positions of the sun are consistent so maybe there is 2 suns after all. in the end it all just ends up that i think the clouds look better lighter in the foreground. i did try it with the clouds darker but it just didn't look right at all and didn't have the effect that i was after and the background clouds were perfect especially when, towards the end of the shot, you see the sun poking out from behind the city

The same reason that Tie fighters are firing at the falcon. Its all about disabling the ship(s). like the Tantive thing.

i agree. it obviously seems that the stardestroyers can't lock their tractor beam onto a moving object so have to disable it first. It happened with the Tantive IV in ANH. they had to disable it first. same with the transports, and as there are no TIEs to do that job in that scene it is logical that the stardestroyers would fire upon the ships.
Wow a bonus select! Thanks! Ady I am surprised you said you were worried about not having enough finished shots for the trailer, didn't you say you had about half the movie done?

yeh, but don't forget not all the movie has an effects shot
So true, but I figure you had close to half of those done too.
Beautiful new shot, Ady! Makes sense to see a fair amount of brightness, then later on, it's much darker when they pick up Luke. Once the sun starts setting, it doesn't take long. :)

Come on, Adywan. I was trying to give you my perspective on the sequence you redid in the most mature way I could, cause you said you like mature feedback. However, I don't find your response mature in how yock me as someone who doesn't know his Star Wars and 'lol' in my face in front of everyone here. And why should I re-watch Return of the Jedi? I'm watching the Empire Strikes Back here. And yes, I've seen Return of the Jedi, and for all intents and purposes, it is not The Empire Strikes Back in a lot of ways. This is not a critique based on how it compares with the entire saga, but based on what I'm seeing.
You're a smart person Adywan and I know you know a lot about Star Wars. And while I do not approve of some of the various changes you do to the movies, I do understand and respect the reasons on why you do them (well, from now on). Just please don't 'lol' me, it's not cool.
I will be more than glad to see ESB revisted so all the disracting errors will be corrected and the little bit of spice or allot the Ady adds makes it look so much more up to date and time lees.
The refinery is still in these stills in my mind, behind the clouds. :)

this is the main problem with forums in that it is impossible to know just how exactly a post is meant to come across. It was meant in a jovial kind of way and not meant to be insulting, but since we lost the smilies i always put "lol" at the end when it is meant in a light hearted way and not to mock the person i was replying to. I apologise if you took it that way
adywan said:since we lost the smilies...
There were smilies here? Man, I can't even remember! :p
I just wish--and I've said this many times--that deleting our own posts could be implemented, especially as this forum has more double/triple/quadruple/quintuple (?!) posts than anywhere else I've ever seen in my internetting life! Haha. Or, there are a bunch of blank posts because someone couldn't delete their post.
