How about seeing the gas mine in one of the other cloud city shots? Even smaller would be cool.

Give it up man!

I can see the news highlight now: "Fanfilm Creator Murders Fellow Forum Poster in Fit of Rage... details at 11." :)

Ady, how's the wampa coming (if at all)?  How much of the creature are you intending to make?  And are you hoping to replace ALL previous wampa shots with your model?

Ah, great!

I was wondering, what 'style' of Force Ghost is appearing in the 'Revisited' saga? In ROTJ, the force ghosts that appear there (Obi-Wan on Dagobah, Yoda, Obi-Wan and Anakin on Endor) are all quite consistent; overall blue glow/hue, a shimmering frame, and transparrent.

But in ESB, the Force Ghost design seemed inconsistent - on Hoth, Obi-Wan looked practically like his living self, but slightly transparrent, while on Endor he had a thick blue glowing line around his frame (similar to the blue atmosphere line around the planets).

I personally always thought that the ROTJ Force Ghost appearance was the definitive one - it was certainly the most consistent, and the most ghost-like to my eyes, as well.

OK, I never noticed the difference, so I looked them up.  Being me, I had to share (GOUT on top, DVD on bottom, from WG's Split Screen):

The shot Ady is referring to.  Ignore the Dreaded Blue, of course.

The other scene from ESB that he's trying to match.  Notice out the DVD actually looks like its trying to match Return of the Jedi because of the Dreaded Blue.

Force Ghost Obi-Wan from Return of the Jedi.  Notice how the DVD version takes away the Dreaded Blue in this scene.  Why?

The last time we see Obi-Wan.  Ignore the Dreaded Hayden.

So we have different shades of blue, no shade of blue, different levels of transparency, different levels of glow, basically a huge mess.  And these are just random frames, I'm sure from shot to shot in a scene Obi-Wan is different.

Speaking of Force Ghost Obi-Wan, what did you decide about this scene

where Obi-Wan is only a couple feet tall and floaty?  Did you move him behind the stump, making him standing really far away from Luke?

"Speak up, I can't hear you back here!"

I have no problem with mini-Obi-Wan.  It just makes his close ups really funny to me.

I say, significantly raise the pitch of Obi-Wan's voice and have some fun with the "mini-Obi" idea. He could sound a little like "Alvin & the Chipmunks."

i'm still in the designing stages at the moment. I hopefully have most of the materials i need for the wampa now. I'm replacing every shot that you see the wampas face and even maybe the arm too. i really want to make an atriculated hand that will open and close to give it more life. So i will be building a new head & shoulders and maybe a full arm.

Awesome.  I can't wait to see it.

Glad to hear you're doing something with the "ghost glow" effect.  And people need to remember that once you've said something is final, it's final and they should stop whining about it.  If they don't like it, they can make their own.

And ahh!  The new avatar threw me off - now how will I quickly scan through the thread for your posts?  :-P  I do like it, though.

i've done a bit of tweaking to the latest preview shot, so here is the final version

I'm guessing the clouds move within the sequence (not a request for a clip... just asking)?

If the Cloud Car moving towards us doesn't work due to lack of material to work with, couldn't a previous clip of a Cloud Car moving away from us and towards the city still work?  It could act as a lead-in to the city fly-by to Leia's apartment.

Also, a few extra suggestions:

(1) to help with the scale and depth, would it be possible to make the clouds behind Cloud City darker (even just a little bit) so the foreground clouds stand out from the background ones?  Maybe not a solid darkening, but even make the bottoms of the clouds darker whereas the main body is a little darker to help show they are farther in the distance.

this is what I am referring to as far as the "bottoms" of the clouds being darker to give them dimensionality

this could be a cool one to use when Luke is approaching Cloud City (place the city on the left so the light source is almost behind it as Luke approaches from the right)

Here is a great source for cloudy sky shots that could be used for either Bespin or Hoth:

And just something for everyone to think about, regardless of EMPIRE:R: has anyone thought of recoloring the clouds and sky to more reflect Bespin as a non-oxygen gas giant?   How would the sky and clouds look if they had a more yellowish tint as opposed to the Earth-like "white clouds, blue sky"? I'm imagining something from the perspective of being in the outer atmosphere of Saturn or Jupiter.

an idea for either when the Falcon escapes Bespin and the sun rises on the left, or when the rebel fleet first approaches Endor, if the Endor and its forest moon idea are to be used.  When the planets pop up (as they exit hyperspace -which the spinning blue tunnel would need to be added)  the Endor moon could move towards us faster than the planet behind it to help create scale as well as speed.

maybe doing something with the clouds to make Bespin more alien looking...

(2) also, what about the possibility of showing traffic over Cloud City and some city activity?  It would amount to spots with tiny running lights, as well as some lights on Cloud City itself.  Also, would it create more dimensionality to darken Cloud City to some degree, so the lighter area reflects the roundness so to speak?  Regardless of whether a model is used for Cloud City, to at least have a basic 3-dimensional object to play with in regards to lighting effects could be useful.

Some other sources to check out:

the focus is mainly on how light would reflect and look off of the metallic skin of Cloud City and what could possibly be done to give it more dimensionality.

Hmm, I dunno. I always thought that his first appearance was more like a vision than an actual manifestation. It leaves the viewer wondering if Luke was hallucinating or not.

Ah yes. Why do I always have to clear my cache to see any changes? :p (and if no one says anything, it seems like I'm blissfully unaware!)

Problem with that mock-up is you would still need to rebuild the mining platform cause the perspective is way off...

Why! I was ready to post that! damn.

You'd need to get someone with 3D modelling skills to pull it off there isn't much sourced materials out there on the interwebs.

I actually sort of agree with this, but its not a deal breaker by any means.  But technically this is the first force ghost we've seen, so it will be creepy and weird to the viewer no matter how it looks.

Ady, I checked the like you provided for Sci-fi 3D, and they have one thats maya friendly. It's the model at the bottom of the list.

Just curious, what kind of shot are you wanting?

Thats Very interesting stuff you posted there Monroville! Id like to see more variations of clouds in bespin.

I like the morning picture you show that is awesome when luke aproach to bespin. Cloudy moody, prepares the viewer that luke is going to deep waters..

Maybe i will make a quickie mockup that shows how the mod can change.

Nice one!

^Again, Ady has asked that people remove the bottom logo if they're editing his screenshots. ;)

I've cropped it out it will take a wee while to refresh ( I assume the request was posted while I was working on that mockup), shame to lose the refinery, it was one of SE additions I liked the most but as always it Ady's baby and Ady's call.

for those that aren't happy with my decision to remove the refinery well i just couldn't resist doing this. The refinery always reminded me of something when i watched it spinning in the clouds and i couldn't figure out what it was, until now. now hopefully you'll all get this image stuck in your mind when you think of the refinery and never ask about me putting it back in ever again. lol
