No idea if it mention it before but if we want to have a more intense battle ady should take care to add some more lasers in the battle. Not necessary to show the source. For example in the side AT-AT shots it will be cool to see random lasers hit or mis hit the Walkers. Like in ANH when the speeders making their passes the guns will stop and again the towers (not visible) fire again.

Impfighter: i will make those some moments later ;)

Wow, what an interesting couple of days.

I think Impfighter went to film school and his doctoral thesis was "A Disscussion on the technical aspects of filming the Hoth Battle scene, specifically AT-AT laser colors, model construction, mattes, and special effects."

Also, to see Adywan freak out over the matte was very surprising.

Something has been on my mind for a few days and it relates to the HD camera ADywan bought and something he said. Adywan stated that he needed the camera to complete some shots for the ESB:R, but it would also come in handy for the prequels.

What could he have in mind for that I ask myself? A Jar Jar death scene?

It seems Adywan has put some thought into the prequels revisited and I am curious to find out what he has in mind and how his vision differs or is similar to the phantom editor.

@ Imperial Fighter

Thank you for analysis of the Hoth battle (mostly) continuity problems. You really made the difference! Great stuff!

@ Vaderios

Thank you for your talent, creativity and work! It's a pleasure to look at it all the time! However, I disagree with a fully sunny weather with Alps in the Hoth battle. It looks like war came to Switzerland, very weird :-)

@ Adywan and all

I just discovered something you probably already concidered. If not: the original music for "Executor" reveal. I discovered a version of Imperial March which was composed only for that reveal originally, but finally replaced with the concert-version of that theme in the finished movie.

As you already used that same concert-version for your Death Star reveal in ANH:R (which was a spectacular take on that sequence) might it be possible to use the originally purposly composed version for Executor reveal in ESB:R?

IMHO it would make sense because it sounds like a very similar but stronger variation with lots of background horns supporting rythmically, therefore less "oldfashioned" then used beginning of a concert version.

Also there is less "SE-need-to-be-heard-but-is-not-because-of-the-subwoofer-engine-rumble" Contrabaass & Vcello-harmonical-fundament of the concert-version. In this deliberate version you can use as much engine-rumble it needs and a lots of brass-section comes trough anyway.

Musically, it's not just neutral "represantation of Imperial theme" but sounds rhytmically like "towsends of people moving heavy warmachinery forward" (an accent on the 1. beat but in every second bar) which suites much better for that scene - Williams knew exactly how, what and why he did.

Also, it would avoid "repeating" of a track you now already used in ANH:R which seems to be very conveniant.

It looks like win - win situation if you use it.

Please listen to it and write what you think about it. It's on a 2CD soundtrack edition from 1997, CD1 , a second part of an "previously unreleased" track 4 : THE IMPERIAL PROBE / ABOARD THE EXECUTOR .

I isolated only this second part for everybody to hear it because that's where music starts in the original movie, after "We better start the evacuation". After "reveal", it goes to Herr Admiral Ozzel - conversation with Vader and others, like the concert  - version in the movie.

Have fun !

Ooooh!!  I like that arrangement!! Very subtle and not too in your face different!

And does solve the problem of Adymans music score becoming an 'edit - copy - paste' like AOTC's bloody movie soundtrack. What a shambles that was!!

Vaderios...great work on the AT-AT attack visuals. One thing though... You should probably edit the "chemtrails" out of the new sky shots in the background. The skies should be solid blue like in the film.

Weren't the chemtrails from escaping Rebel ships?

Well i've been working on the rebel transport escape scene today and i have to say that i'm definitely going with the blue electrical laser bolts instead of the multi coloured original one. It add so much to this scene and give the Ion canon its own distinctive look as well as looking 100% better and more realistic colour wise. Making the blast points brighter and the new colouring takes away the fakeness of the original animation. I just love it.

a still shot isn't really the best way of seeing just how well this new effect works. it looks so much better in motion

i'm also going to have the stardestroyer firing at the escaping ships and destroying one of the x-wings before it gets blasted by the ion canon bolts

Can we assume you will do something similar to the color variations of the AT-AT explosions?

That's a great idea -- it'll add more drama to the scene, and drive home the plotline that the Rebels are barely escaping from the Imperial assault.

Take care,

i just got back today. wow! u guys have gone through a lot of stuff! more on the hoth battle, i was wondering if we

could have troops disbanding from the AT-AT's or maybe some on the ground? i liked vaderios' ideas of the

brightened shots. lastly, when luke throws the detenator in through the hatch of the AT-AT, could we have a better

explosion or at least get rid of the multicolored lights and replace it with something else?

I came up with an idea.

It will be cool if from the AT AT who explode to have some molten metal from its inside. Imagine like lava falling.

I will make a quick mockup.

Something like this... The particles in AE may have some better results:

And for ImpFighter:

Considering some sky replacement the beam can be more visible and defined.

I vote for blue :)

I think you mixed & matched some of those pairs.

Love the idea of an X-wing being blasted! But then I always love more explosions.

Might I suggest that the Star Destroyer scores a direct hit on the Transport but it still escapes limping into hyperspace?  Like in the scene just after the falcon leaves the asteroid field and recieves a direct hit from the Star Destroyer but survives. I think it would add to the tension making the blockade seem that much more formidable.

Just a suggestion.

I like the electrical bolts coming out of the ion cannon hit. It would be nice to see some more bolts and maybe some that are more pronounced (like the Vaderios' image), as well as a slightly bluer explosion.  Regardless, it looks fantastic and like everyone else, I can't wait to see it in action!

As another suggestion to add to this scene, maybe you could:
(1) have the SD lights do something similar to the scene in METROPOLIS (1927) when the underground machine is destroyed and the city lights surge and then shut off, as well as:

(2) have the SD not just drop downwards when the rebel freighter goes by, but have the SD go into a slow spin downwards (not enough to make a complete circle, but enough that it lists to one side before the freighter flys past).

I like the sequence "as-is" albeit with the Vaderios'/Your electrical-blue ion blast addition, and I know there is PLENTY on the plate as it is.  To do more with the de-powered SD would be interesting but not important.  Again, just something to think about how it would look in the scene.

Just a quickie, similar to this shot above - when the first Mynock suckers onto the window of the MF with Leia in the cockpit, she reacts pretty slowly. Can this be edited a bit tighter, to make a more authentic "shocked" reaction from her?

Beautiful work, all around!  Every time Adywan posts, I feel better about what he's doing!  Which, as high as my feelings started, I'm about to explode with excitement!
