Ady: in that case, I would either seed the vids on The Pirate Bay or upload them to a file sharing site like Rapidshare.  You could also try the flipped video trick that works for I AM LEGEND and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, which are playing in their entirety on youtube.  Making the videos private might work, but it sounds like you've already tried that.

And is it Scooby Doo month?  I noticed how everyone is changing their avatar to a SD villain.

I'd vote for straight up newsgroup release (never going to disappear) or filesharing sites like filefactory (may get pulled at some point, and it costs money to upload on most of them). Sure, these would axe streaming options, but it would at least get them out there. You could even password protect the files from prying eyes.

This may sound a bit crazy, and I realize that we're not at this point yet, but have we ruled out using old fashioned mail? For those members who find it difficult to obtain the edit online, perhaps a mail tree could be coordinated? So, for example, one person (with access) would copy the edits onto a physical medium (CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, flash drives... whatever) and mail it another. The recipient would then copy the files from the medium before sending it along to the next person in line, and so on and so forth. It's slow, of course, but there it is.

Sounds a lot like "Pay It Forward", which is one method of distribution. But like you said, we're not there yet.

Sounds a lot like "Pay It Forward", which is one method of distribution. But like you said, we're not there yet.

 

Ah yes! "Pay it forward!" That's the phrase I was looking for.

Pay-it-forward doesn't work and i'm not going to be doing it this time around.  I will be sending out a certain amount of copies but not for PIF. I sent out over a hundred copies last time, many of them to people who promised to make copies and send them to people closer to them that asked. but only a handful bothered to PIF. The rest just disappeared after they got the copy, many not even bothering to stick around to say thanks. 

The main releases will be upload to newsgroups, then it is up to others to add it elsewhere. The chances are, if things go according to plan here in my personal life, then i probably won't even have a fast enough connection to upload any versions myself, so i would have to rely on the help of trusted others to get them to newsgroups in the first place.

You got that right Ady, I used to use PIF years ago and it never worked, it always stopped somewhere, that is why I ditched it a long time ago, and will never use it again, from now on I am going to be very picky\choosey to who I ever send stuff to again, I completely understand the no thanks or feedback what so ever from some and it is pretty damn sad, but live and learn right?

When you are finished and do need help still getting it uploaded just send me a PM, I have just upgraded my cable account and my internet is faster than ever, and I thought I had a very fast connection before lol, well anyways just throwing that out there.

I have never actually used PIF myself, but I'm disappointed to hear that you've all had bad experiences with it. I guess you're right, though--it only takes one person to spoil it. Shame, that.

I'm sorry to see all the negative attitudes about PIF. Personally speaking, I got many great edits and preservations via PIF, and I always made sure to pass them on to others. The chain will eventually break down, but it always seemed to get the job at least 90% done as far as I could tell.

But maybe I'm naive.

In that case, you can always send copies to Bingowings, OO5 and maybe Ganemede to upload them on RS, TPB or other places.  I guess what we need now are people who have high internet speeds who are willing to commit to uploading this for others.

Harmy would be a good person too (he put his stuff up over at TehParadox.com).

It doesn't cost a thing to upload to a lot of sites.  Megashares, Depositfiles, Letitbit, Rapidgator and Mediafire (a personal favorite) are all free to upload.  There may be a limit, but we're talking about 100 to 300 gb, so there should be plenty of leeway for uploading a good MKV or AVCHD of EMPIRE:R.

For those who DO upload to a file sharing site (involving RAR files), I would definitely consider altering the name (from EMPIRE STRIKES BACK to something like LUCK'S MISSING HAND; password protection does help too, per Savage's note).

If you're uploading for free, it's not really about your upload speed, because the upload speed is severely limited by the server. I have incredible upload speed on my connection at the school dorms, yet it still takes me like two days to upload a DVD9, except for uloz.to, it takes me like 20 minutes to upload a DVD9 there. Also, I will be staying at home, (where my connection speed is bellow average) over the summer, so with a summer release planned for both ESB:R and DeEd v2.0, I'm afraid I'll be glad if I'll be able to take care of uploading my own project.

Newgroups are a great option... but if you are willing to break the files up in 200mb pieces, an excellent option is http://www.2shared.com/ due to the fast download speeds for free users.  I've gotten as good as 2MBps download rate using them.

You can set JDownloader to handle them and walk away for an hour.

It's been a looong time since I last posted but I visit this page everyday.  I'm sorry to hear that there won't be a PIF tree this time around.  I was part of one for ANH: R and can honestly say I did my part.  Sucks that some selfish individuals ruin it for everybody else.  I just have a laptop and it sucks at downloading large files.  Looks like I'm going to have to rely on someone's generosity to get a DVD copy of ESB:R.  I'd be willing to mail a blank Yuden DVD, I have plenty, to someone and also pay for return postage if they would be kind enough to burn me a quality copy.

Just to put it out there, I have a cable modem, so I have some really good up/download speeds (up to 10 mb/s).  Also, once you put it on places like Rapidshare, Mediafire and the like, the download speed is dependent on their servers.

I have been distributing ANH:R around New Zealand. Did not think of it as PIF, I just knew heaps of people who would love this definitive version of Star Wars.

PIF would be too difficult this time around anyway, since few people have bluray writers atm. I'd be happy to upload and seed off thepiratebay; i have decent cable internet.

For the record, I too, have  a cable connection and could seed a torrent for a while as needed.

Secondly, I think there might be something to the suggestion of using SkyDrive or Google Drive to distribute the files.  This can easily be shared and SkyDrive has 25GB for legacy members like myself.

Another interesting note, for those without Blu-Ray burners, you can split a blu-ray disc at full quality onto multiple DVDs and still get full HD quality as long as you have a Blu-Ray player for your TV.

Here is some information on how to do this.  I don't have a blu-ray burner so, this is how I plan to burn and watch the movie, while keeping the HD quality.

Actually bluray writers are cheap and very popular now. However the trend is to streaming services. Bluray is on its way out.

For those of us in the USA, Newegg has a blu burner for $65 on sale. Come on guys no excuses.

Blu-Ray is definitely NOT on its way out.  Streaming multiple 25GB movie files won't be commonplace around the world for over a decade, if not longer.  Until unlimited Internet bandwidth is available, it just won't happen.  Sure, ISPs are trying to create premium packages for this purpose but it will take many years for that testbed to even become a viable option.

Physical discs are here to stay... for at least another generation.
